Subj: Love Bontril
Date: 1/5/2005
I have been taking bontril for about two weeks. I have lost 9 pounds so far. I have read over the other comments about the drug and can honestly say I have not experienced any real bad side effects. The only side effect I would say I have had is a few restless nights and a couple of days of dry mouth. My recommendation to others taking this or thinking about taking it is to remember you still have to eat. Although your body does not “feel” hungry, it needs nourishment. To the ones who have experienced headaches, do you think it is due to a decrease in your food intake or even caffeine? When we cut back on our eating pattern our body tends to rebel. Just something to think about. I love bontril so far. I have had great success already with little side effects.
Lori
AskDocWeb: Caffeine headaches are well documented by those who give it up. Congratulations on the good work!
Subj: Getting off Bontril
Date: 1/29/2005
I have been taking Bontril off and on for over a year now. I first took it to loose weight for my wedding, and I lost 35 pounds in less then 3 months. At first it was great, but I was not able to stop taking it. When I would stop, I would start gaining the weight back very quickly. I never gained all of it back due to my off and on use. I recently stop taking Bontril, and the first two weeks I had severe headaches, depression, weight gain, and I could not stay awake, I slept almost day and night the first week. Based on my experience, anyone taking this drug should maintain a exercise routine before and discontinuing, and also take vitamins after discontinuing. In addition, don’t take the drug for a long period of time. I have just 1 question, I am planning pregnancy, I have been off the drug for about 3 weeks. How long should I wait to be off the drug before pregnancy?
Maria
AskDocWeb: Losing the weight you need to, before getting pregnant, will make the delivery process easier for you. In answer to your question, consider waiting a couple of months to be on the safe side.
Subj: Breathing problems
Date: 2/20/2005
A few ?’s: 1) Is it true that Bontril speeds up your metabolism? 2) I thought that it could harm your body to take meds that speed up your metabolism, is that true? 3) Do all diet pills speed up metabolism? 4) I was taking phen-fen back when it was on the market, and I always felt like I was never getting a good, full breath of air. I went off it and have not been on a diet pill since. I’m nervous this will happen again — is it likely that I will encounter breathing problems on Bontril because of my past experience with Phen-fen? Thank you.
AskDocWeb: Yes, it is likely you will have the same problem. Most diet medications speed up your metabolism. That is part of what makes them work for weight loss.

Subj: FDA approved?
Date: 3/1/2005
Is this drug approved by the FDA? I have been taking it for about 10 days and like it so far. I do have headaches, stomach aches, little diarrhea and sleeplessness. I only take one in the AM. Will I still get the same results?
Tammy
AskDocWeb: Yes, Bontril is FDA approved. With your symptoms, you should see a doctor. He will likely tell you to discontinue use if they continue another week.
Subj: Other meds with Bontril

What side effects might you have if you are taking bontril, lexapro and adderall at the same time? Thanks for your time,
Stephanie
AskDocWeb: You could have severe hypertension and GI disorders.
Subj: Bontril wasn’t worth it
Date: 4/4/2005
I used Bontril for about a week but I was so irritable I felt it wasn’t worth it. I was very snappy with my poor children so I stopped taking it. Any suggestions on controlling that.
Camille
AskDocWeb This was probably a side effect of the Bontril. Our only suggestion would be to increase your physical activity to put that extra energy to good use.
Subj: Stop and feel depressed
Date: 4/26/2005
I have taken Bontril for several months. It certainly increased my sex drive and gave me more energy. When I stop taking it, I become very depressed.
Jacob
AskDocWeb Bontril is a weight reduction pill and only to be used for a short time. Depression and fatigue are withdrawal symptoms.
Subj: Sleeplessness and hair loss with Bontril
Date: 5/3/2005
I love it. I have been taking Bontril since November and lost 35lbs. It is working, but I feel an addiction. Depression and low energy are present when skipping doses. I’ve asked doctor to alternate strengths. Most of the time I do experience sleeplessness. Are there any reports of hairloss? I am loosing my hair by the handfulls when brushing out wet. Could this be due to weightloss or drug side effect?
Yvette
AskDocWeb: The manufacturer did not list hairloss as a side effect of bontril.
Subj: Take the edge off
Date: 5/17/2005
I have been taking bontril off and on for about 1-1/2 years. I’ve lost a total of 80 pounds. When I feel as though I am getting dependant upon the drug I usually lay off it for a couple of months and if I need to I substitute it with phentermine which also helps to take the edge off my appetite.

Subj: Still healthy?
Date: 5/24/2005
I am 17 and started using bontril when I was around 140 lbs. I dropped over 30 lbs within the first 3 weeks. I didn’t starve myself but I’m wondering if that is in any way normal to lose that much, that fast. Wondering if I’m still healthy?
Jessica
AskDocWeb: Yes, you are doing fine. We’ve heard reports of the same from others.

I have been on Bontril for 5 days and have lost 5lbs! I am loving it. I have 30 more to go. I haven’t started exercising but I will today.

Subj: Lost 64 pounds
Date: 6/5/2005
I have been taking Bontril for about 7 months and I have lost 64lbs! I need to lose about 40 more. I have had no side effects what so ever. I am on a 1200 calorie diet and walk 6 miles a day. I have just started doing some weight training. I am monitored monthly by my Dr. This pill has really changed my life for the better!

Subj: Clinical trials for Bontril?
Date: 6/21/2005
All my life I have been told how lucky I am to be as healthy as I am. I had maintained a healthy weight most of my life, until I reached my early 30’s. It was around this time that the weight piled on. I was diagnosed, Obese. I can rattle a few excuses, but we all know that I ate more than I exercised…. I began taking Bontril and changed my lifestyle, and became more active. I lost over 40 pounds! Bontril works! I have been taking Bontril off and on consistently for over 3 years, prescribed by the same doctor. If I gain a few pounds, I start taking it again, maybe 30 days in a row. But the problem is: As a result of a normal yearly physical, and echo cardiogram: I have recently been diagnosed with Mitral Valve Prolapse AKA a heart murmur. Last year, my heart was fine. In the clinical studies did Bontril cause any false positives when taking these types of tests? Where can I find the clinical trial report? Thanks!
Joan
AskDocWeb: With an echo cardiogram, there are no drugs that can cause a false positive. That would be like saying the smell of gasoline affects a radar image (it doesn’t).
Subj: Stopping Bontril to get pregnant
Date: 7/9/2005
I’ve been taking Bontril for a little over 2 months. I have steadily lost 10 pounds, which my doctor says is a good weight and that I am not just losing water. I LOVE this medicine. I feel like it has completely erased the “food bank” in my brain. The only side effect I have had is a very dry mouth and bleeding gums. I am considering getting pregnant in the next month or so, so I stopped taking it today. Do I need to wait longer in order for it to get out of my system?
GZ
AskDocWeb: We think that it’s a good idea to wait at least a couple of weeks to make sure the medication is out of your system.
Subj: Lost 19 pounds in 13 weeks with Bontril
Date: 7/10/2005
I have been taking Bontril for about 13 weeks. I have lost 19 lbs. I experienced some problem with headaches, during my first week. While I know that this is not LISTED as a side effect, I feel that it is one. I also had a slight problem with my blood pressure being elevated, when I first began to exercise again, after beginning the Bontril. Both of the problems went away and I am overall happy with my results from taking Bontril. I think that people who take the Bontril should keep a close watch on their blood pressure, especially during/after exercising and during particularly stressful events.

Subj: Bontril addict
date: 8/5/2005
I have been taking bontril for about 3 years now. When I first started I weighed 160 now I weight 125. I don’t take it on a every day bases. I work night shift and I find it helps me stay awake 15 or more hours. It no longer cures my appitite. I think now its mostly just an addiction. I love my bontril and have never had any side effects. I can take 2 a day. I also find its better to breaks open the capsules when I take it. I have kept off all my weight. I’d suggest this product over anything it really works.
