Subj: Psychological addiction and abuse?
Date: 11/15/2010
I started bontril once a day capsules in Feb 2010 at a weight of 146 pounds. By August I was down to 116 and now steady at 120 without Bontril. I have heard this wonder drug can cause psychological addiction and abuse of the drug, is that the case? I have a family member on Bontril now who has in the past been addicted to Adderal; and the side effects of that were mood swings, anorexia, anger issues, and manic speech/actions, should she be concerned that might happen with the Bontril, she’s losing very quickly and is extremely hyper while on them. Any advice is appreciated.
Anna
AskDocWeb: According to drugs.com, “Bontril is habit forming. You can become physically and psychologically dependent on this medication, and withdrawal effect may occur if you stop taking it suddenly after several weeks of continuous use.” That is why it is important to tell the prescribing doctor about any previous history of addiction and/or drug abuse.
Subj: I thought I was going to die
Date: 11/25/2010
I started taking bontril on a Friday, Saturday my throat started closing up, Sunday not as bad, anyway I had to call an ambulance on Tuesday because I thought I was going to die. I am taking lexapro as well as seroquel. I lost weight the few days I was on them but couldn’t handle the side effects. I flushed them down the toilet they scared me so bad.
Phill
AskDocWeb: That is not surprising, according to drugs.com, there is a major drug interaction listed between Bontril (phendimetrazine) and Lexapro (escitalopram). The possibility exists for serotonin syndrome, which may produce mental status changes such as irritability, altered consciousness, confusion, hallucinations, and coma. Combining these drugs may also cause autonomic dysfunctions such as tachycardia, hyperthermia, diaphoresis, shivering, blood pressure lability, and mydriasis; neuromuscular abnormalities such as hyperreflexia, myoclonus, tremor, rigidity, and ataxia; and gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal cramping, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

I just started bontril today and am a truck driver…is this ok? This is my livelihood and I need to know.
Paulasue
AskDocWeb: The decision on whether or not to take this drug is based on a lot more than just your occupation. The only way to know if it is okay for you personally is to consult with your doctor.
Subj: Lost 100 pounds but worried
Date: 1/8/2011
I have been taking bontril for 8 months and have lost 100 pounds, this along with counting calories and going to the gym 6 days a week has been a great team. Now I am not going to be able to take the bontril and am worried about falling, What is the longest amount of time someone can take bontril?
Linda
AskDocWeb: We were unable to find any source that would recommend using Bontril longer than three months. Bontril is related to amphetamines. Most sources say it should be limited to a few weeks of use.
Subj: Is this true?
Date: 1/14/2011
My doctor gave me Bontril and I haven’t started it yet. My pharmacist told me that if I am exercising that I should only have to take it a couple times a week. Is this true? The bottle says take once per day. It is 105mg time release.
Tammy
AskDocWeb: While it may be appropriate for some people to take it just twice a week, that doesn’t mean that you should do that. And that is not what your doctor ordered. If you are thinking about going against the advice of your doctor, at least talk it over with him or her first.
Subj: Bontril with Phentermine?
Date: 1/20/2011
I’ve been taking phentermine for about 8 months now and it doesn’t seem to be working as well as it did in the beginning. When discussing this with my doctor, she said she’d like to put me on Bontril. In reading comparisons and reviews, I noticed one lady said she takes both. Can doctors prescribe both phentermine and bontril together? Is that safe? I’m curious to know what side effects could come from taking both of them. Thanks,
Tonya
AskDocWeb: Since Phentermine is intended for short-term management of obesity there are no studies about the effects of using it with other drugs beyond the short-term. Both Bontril and Phentermine are similar to amphetamines in that they both stimulate the your central nervous system which increases blood pressure and heart rate.
Subj: Nexium with Bontril?
Date: 1/24/2011
Can I take Nexium while taking Bontil? Also I have prehypertension take HCTZ for it 12.5 mg daily.
Wendy
AskDocWeb: We found no drug interactions listed for using HCTZ (Hydrochlorothiazide), Bontril (phendimetrazine), and Nexium (esomeprazole) together however, you would have to check with your doctor to find out if that combination would be safe and appropriate for you.
Subj: I like Bontril
Date: 1/27/2011
I have been on Bontril now for 1 week and 1 day. I like it because it doesn’t take away my whole appetite and it doesn’t have me feeling like the fasting/adipex/phentermine had me feeling. I was depressed and angry with those pills. It gives me just enough energy but I wish it suppressed my appetite just a little bit more. I take the 105 mg once a day. I’m not sure how much weight I’ve lost but I can tell in my clothes that I’ve lost some. I was at 165.

Subj: Dry Mouth?
Date: 2/18/2011
Dry Mouth? I have taken this for a few weeks to aid my diet and it works really well, however two weeks in my mouth is dry, but the worst part is it feels like its raw inside and makes it hard to eat anything? What’s up with that?
Brandon
AskDocWeb: Remember that any side effect that becomes a concern should be reported to your doctor. Many diet drugs list dry mouth as a side effect, which is why it is important to increase the amount of daily water intake while dieting. Dry mouth is an indication of a decrease in saliva production, which is your body’s natural antibiotic. Over an extended period of time dry mouth may result in dental decay and infections of the mouth, throat and upper respiratory tract.
Subj: Love Bontril
Date: 2/23/2011

Laura
Subj: Is this normal?
Date: 3/17/2011
I have been taking Bontril 105 mg once a day for a week. The first 3 days I had a lot of energy but ever since I feel kind of drained. I am thinking about taking it every other day. I actually miss the way it made me feel the first few days. Is this normal?
Brian
AskDocWeb: Yes, when you first start taking Bontril it increases your metabolism. Many people experience a feeling of increased energy that fades as your body adjusts to the drug. As long as it is reducing your appetite then it is still working. Contact your doctor if you have side effects that become a concern.
Subj: Allergic reaction
Date: 3/17/2011
I have been taking Bontril 105mg for 1 week. Last night I had to go to the emergency room due to my uvula (hangs down at back of throat) swelling so big was touching my tongue. My allergy doctor told me to come of Bontril since it is the only new drug I am taking. Hover, I have researched this on the internet and have found that dehydration and breathing through mouth can cause this. I am a mouth breather and didn’t drink water like I was suppose to so that might have been the culpret. I am not sure wheter to try Bontril again or not.

Subj: How far apart should I take them?
Date: 3/22/2011
I’ve been taking Bontril for 3 weeks and I’ve lost 8 pounds. I researched the medication before taking it and found that most headaches are caused by dehydration and increasing your water consumption may help. Also, people shouldn’t STOP eating, but should eat more sensibly and take a multi vitamin. I have one question though: I take 3 / 35 mg a day. How far apart should I take them?
Sheila
AskDocWeb: Bontril is typically prescribed to be taken one hour before meals. However, for prescribing information that applies to you, always check with your doctor or pharmacist to be sure.
Subj: Update from Brian
Date: 3/30/2011
I stayed off Bontril for a week and then started back. So far, I have not had any more issues.

Subj: Wellbutrin with Bontril?
Date: 4/15/2011
Hi. Im currently taking wellbutrin 150mg twice a day and Im about to start taking bontril. Can I take both medicines or will it have a negative effect?
Y. C. P.
AskDocWeb: There is a major drug interaction possible when using Wellbutrin with Bontril. The use of Wellbutrin has been linked to a dose-related risk of seizures. Doses between 300 mg and 450 mg per day increase the risk of seizures by almost ten times. This risk may also be increased when using Wellbutrin with any of the following:
- Anorectics (Bontril and other diet drugs)
- Central nervous system stimulants
- Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MOI)
- Neuroleptic agents
- Opioids
- Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI antidepressants)
- Tricyclic antidepressants
- Other tricyclic compounds
This risk is also increased if Wellbutrin is administered with any substance that can reduce the seizure threshold, particularly in patients with a history of seizures, the elderly, and in others with risk factors for seizures:
- addiction to opiates, cocaine, or stimulants
- brain tumor
- CNS infections
- diabetes treated with oral hypoglycemic agents or insulin
- excessive use of alcohol
- excessive use of sedatives
- head trauma
- metabolic disorders
- severe hepatic cirrhosis
The patient information for Wellbutrin says that the total dose of bupropion should generally not exceed 450 mg per day and that Wellbutrin should be discontinued and not restarted in patients who experience a seizure during treatment.
Subj: Severe stomach cramps
Date: 4/17/2011
I started taking Bontril 35 yesterday. Took the first pill at 1pm was told to take 2 per day. At first I felt great! At 6 pm I started having severe stomach cramps. I was doubled over and could not stand up. This contionued until 6 am. I think it was because I didn’t drink enough water. However today day 2 my stomach still hurts and I feel very bloated. I only took one pill today. Any suggestions?
Lynn
AskDocWeb: Stomach cramps are listed as one of the symptoms of an overdose on Bontril, which should be reported to your doctor immediately. Other symptoms of an overdose include rapid breathing, confusion, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. Always check with your doctor if any side effect becomes severe. Read more feedback about Bontril.
