Not moving the scale
10/4/2012
Been on bontril for a bit over a month. Was long time phen user and phen stopped working for me. weight crept back up. Bontril decreases my appetite and really don’t feel any side effects. Bad news is that even though I’m eating less, my weight hasn’t budged! I tried going up to 3 pills per day (from two 35mg per day) but it’s just not moving the scale. Will probably start to taper down to one and call it quits. No purpose taking this if its not going to work. Oh well. Wish it helped like it seems to have with so many of you!

105 mg capsules are too strong
11/28/2012
If the Bontril extended release 105 mg capsules are too strong is it safe to open the capsule, throw out half of the medicine inside and reclose the capsule tightly and take it?

Lannie

AskDocWeb: That is NOT recommended. Please talk to your doctor about adjusting your dosage.

Bontril tolerance?
12/29/2012
I used bontril for 4months and lost 20 lbs. i still have more to lose but it didn’t seem to be working anymore. I stopped 2 weeks ago thinking if I took a break my tolerance to it would lessen. Is there a certain amount of time I should wait before I start again?

Adelina

AskDocWeb: Those who have tried taking a break to regain the effectiveness of their weight loss medication have reported limited success. They also say that the tolerance builds up faster the second time around. You may want to ask your doctor about alternatives.

What diet should I follow
1/6/2013
I have been taking bontril for 1 week and have lost 5lbs. What diet should I follow to lose more weight. I’m 5’5 and weigh 196.4lbs and really want to get to 140lbs like I weighed after my 1st child. Hope to hear someone soon.

Gracie

AskDocWeb: Medical doctors receive very little, if any, education about diet and nutrition. Their focus is on disease and the medicine (drugs) to treat it. The best diet would be one that is designed specifically for you by a nutritionist.

Mouth sores?
1/15/2013
Hello: I have been taking Bontril for 2 months with great success. I have been losing about 1 pound a week and have lost 8 pounds total (10 more to go)..I went through Thanksgiving and Christmas eating small amounts of the bad food choices, which slowed me down. I came down with a bad cold and fever then mouth sores. Could the sores be caused by Bontril? I stopped the medication for now until I am back in good health.

Marilyn

AskDocWeb: Mouth sores are not listed among the possible side effects of Bontril. However, there are a few hundred different causes of mouth sores, from mild irritation, viruses, serious infections and diseases. You may want to check with your doctor to find out if this needs medical attention.

Bontril heart attack
1/31/2013
Be very careful taking this. I lost 100 pounds in about 8-9 months taking Bontril, and exercising 5 days a week……then at 40 years old had a heart attack. The Dr. Says it was directly caused by the Bontril. I of course immediately stopped taking it and will NEVER take it again…..not worth dying.

Severe cramps
Date: 2/5/2013
I Just started taking Bontril. I am full of energy and it really does suppress my appetite. However, I am having severe cramps with my period started yesterday like never before. is this because of the Meds. thanks

Shoba

AskDocWeb: While menstrual cramps are not listed among the potential side effects of Bontril, a few women have reported a differences in their menstrual cycle. Please note that stomach cramps are one of the possible symptoms of an Bontril overdose.

NOT HUNGRY
Date: 2/21/2013
Just started taking Bontril…am on my fourth day. I have noticed no side affects such as feeling crazy or nervous, rapid heart beats, or creepy crawly hair feelings. I do have a lot of energy, but not the crazy nervous kind. I also am not sleeping but about four hours a night, but that’s not that unusual for me. My only concern is that I have no appetite…none at all! I’m drinking at least 80 ounces of water daily, but I have to force myself to have anything at all for breakfast and lunch, and I have no luck at all with dinner, it just deoesn’t happen. I’m consuming less than 500 cals daily. I also am working out on an eliptical machine 30 min. every evening. I can see the results already, but I’m beginning to worry that I might not be getting enough calories health-wise. I’m just NOT HUNGRY.

AskDocWeb: Dieting requires careful planning to ensure that you meet your nutritional requirements while losing weight. Consideration must also be given to the amount of vitamins and minerals that your body needs to stay healthy. Hopefully you are working with a nutritionist for best results.

Long-term use of Bontril
Date: 3/2/2013
I have been taking this med on and off for about 10 years and love it. I am not able to get under a BMI of 29 without it. I find I am mentally sharper when I take it. I think it helps my ADD where Ritalin did not. My vision gets a little blurred when on it. When I feel my body building a tolerance, instead of taking more, I take less and stop for few days. I also take breaks from it but the weight always returns with my slowed metabolism. I do feel as though i am better at everything when on it. I control how much weight I want to lose, which is awesome for someone on the heavy side. I wish there was more data out there regarding long use side effects. If you know of any studies, please post them.
