Coping with side effects
Date: 4/5/2013
I first began using bontril when I was at college in 2003. I lost 80lbs completely changed my diet. I was off it for a year while at school and continued to jog every morning and eat healthy and lift weights. I was able to maintain my goal weight. When i came home I was unemployed and became sedentary. The weight came back fast.
Since having a job I got bontril again. Initially you experience headaches, frequent urination, increased bowl movements, high heart rate, dry mouth, and that weird closed throat feeling. The best way to combat those side effects is to take the pill with food. I normally will take a pill with a full glass of water, then after 15 minutes eat yogurt, or oatmeal. Also I started taking it with Vitamin B and the dry mouth and headaches went away. I also take a multivitamin in the afternoon. Taking evening primrose at least 2 hrs before bed will help with insomnia. Evening primrose is known to treat insomnia and also help with dryness.

AskDocWeb: Thanks Colleen. We agree with you about evening primrose. You may want to check out the insomnia page for other herbs that also help you get to sleep.
Bontril side effects
Date: 4/9/2006
I took bontril for 2 days only, lose my appetite but can’t sleep – less than 5 hours and is coughing a lot, dry and irritated throut. Should I stop, I really would like to stay on it as bontril does work for me. I am not taking any other medicene.
Fanny
AskDocWeb: One of the characteristics that diet drugs share is that they increase the body’s need for fluids. If you don’t drink enough water your throat may become dry and irritated, which could also cause coughing. When side effects make you consider stopping a medication then it is time to check back with your doctor.
Safer alternative to Phentermine
Date: 4/19/2006
I have been on Bontril for a month and lost 4 pounds, no side effects, I also take Lexapro and do have high blood pressure sometimes. BONTRIL IS A MUCH SAFER ALTERNATIVE TO PHENTERMINE WHICH GAVE ME 5 SEIZURES LAST YEAR AND I ALMOST ENDED UP IN A CASKET ON CHRISTMAS. DO YOUR RESEARCH.

Mood swing side effects
Date: 5/25/2006
My doctor just put me on bontril. I have not started it yet. I have not been able to really take diet pills due to the side effects. How long do the mood swing side effects normally last?
Jen
AskDocWeb: Although mood changes are unlikely they are listed as serious possible side effect of Bontril that should be reported to your doctor immediately. This includes agitation, uncontrolled anger, hallucinations, and/or nervousness. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.
Hashimotos
Date: 2/3/2014
Have taken generic Bontril off and on for a couple years. First for weight loss, but now I take it because I have Hashimotos which has the symptom of extreme tiredness. Never had any side effects. There are days when I probably couldn’t function without it with Hashimotos. I love it.

Short term weight loss
Date: 8/5/2014
I’m curios… It says short term weight loss so does that mean that when I stop taking it all the weight will come back?????
Kristy
AskDocWeb: If you rely only on the pill then yes, the weight is likely to come back once the pills are discontinued. This drug is intended to be used along with an exercise program and changes in the diet. Without those life-style changes there is very little chance of keeping the weight off.
More hungry
Date: 9/29/2014
My short journey with Bontril started 4 days ago. The 1st two days my appetite was nearly non-existent. The last 2 days I have been hungry all day. I have increased energy. I feel good. The symptoms I’ve experienced is dry mouth (which is okay, b/c I’m drinking more water) & a little nausea (which is light and goes away after I eat). What’s up w/ me being more hungry than I was before I started the pills???

AskDocWeb: Sorry AP, we don’t have an explanation for you. Please discuss this with your doctor.
