Subj: LOVE IT!
Date: 5/16/2006
I have been on Bontril for exactly two weeks now and I have already lost 7 pounds! The only side effect that I am dealing with is the bad taste in my mouth which has me paranoid about my breath. I am loving the energy that I have during the day and I’m having no trouble sleeping. I did experience a dull headache the first few days, but that has gone away now. What is so great is that I have all this energy and I don’t feel nervous or crazy like you do with other diet pills. This is great!!

Subj: Heart racing and moody
Date: 5/26/2006
I have used bontril for probably 8 weeks, I’ve lost 20lbs and it works pretty good. Sometimes I feel my heart racing, but what bothers me most is that I feel I am definitely irritable and moody sometimes and it’s not that time of the month.

Kim

AskDocWeb: When you feel your heart racing have your blood pressure checked as soon as possible, and check your pulse. Don’t take any risks with your health. If your heart continues to race you should talk to your doctor about this.

Subj: Bontril headaches
Date: 5/29/2006
I have been on Bontril (1 a day, slow release) for 1 week and a half now. I’ve noticed that my appetite has definitely decreased although I have been getting headaches for the past few days. Although the meds could be the culprit, I believe that they may be due to eating less as well as quitting caffeine cold turkey. My doctor only gave me the prescription after I agreed to come into the office once a week to have my weight and blood pressure monitored. My 1st visit was Friday and I lost 2 lbs and my BP was low as usual. Yay! To the rest of you Bontril users: please, please be careful!! This drug can cause serious harmful side effects and should not be used without a doctor’s supervision. It can cause your blood pressure to skyrocket as well as heart problems, mental problems etc. It is also highly addictive and your doctor should have a plan for you to eventually wean yourself off of them. Also, this drug is not intended for long-term use. Please be aware of the warnings! My doctor well informed me of the disadvantages and I am strictly adhering to her guidelines in order to use the Bontril as safely as possible. Good luck everybody!

Courtney

AskDocWeb: Yes, your headaches could be caused by caffeine withdrawal but they are also possible side effects of taking Bontril. Good luck to you.

Subj: Still hungry
Date: 6/8/2006
I have been taking Bontril for 3 weeks and I am still hungry! I feel so let down. I’m continuing my diet, but it is extremely difficult.

Kathy

AskDocWeb: Bontril won’t make your appetite go away, it just reduces it. Just keep going for awhile longer and remember to exercise.

Subj: Combining other products with Bontril
Date: 6/9/2006
Hey I just started taking bontril, and I hope it works for me. My question is that I’m combining others pills with bontril: b complex, hidroclorothiazide, lecithin and chromium picolinate. Oh, and I start a healthy diet plan and an exercise program and I would like to know, if all that is ok or is too much considering that for me is very hard to lose weight. Thanks,

Ps. Sorry for the errors, I don’t speak English at all. Anyway I hope you can understand me and help me with my question.

Lixa

AskDocWeb: Sounds like you need to talk to a doctor about setting up a weight loss program. A doctor will check out your medical condition to make sure this is safe.

Subj: Hair loss with Bontril
Date: 6/15/2006
I have been taking Bontril for some time now. I like the way it works. I am just worried now because my hair is falling out at a rapid pace. I was told to take vitamins with this medicine because it can make your hair fall out. Any other suggestions besides to stop taking them? That’s not an option for me right now.

Rebecca

AskDocWeb: Use a shampoo that is gentle on your hair, and do not rub your hair with a towel to dry it, just pat it dry. Also avoid pulling on your hair as much as possible such as with a curling iron or brush. You may also want to take a look at a shampoo to prevent hair loss.

Subj: Bontril insomnia
Date: 6/17/2006
Took my 1st pill late afternoon and had insomnia (1 1/2 hours of sleep 1st night). Took the 2nd pill early morning next day and got a little sleep next evening but noticed all my muscles in back and neck are so tense. Extremely tired of course so skipped the 3rd pill to get some sleep but muscles in my back/neck are still so tense…any suggestion as to why???

Cheryl

AskDocWeb: Remember that alcohol can increase the possibility of experiencing side effects while using this drug. Muscle tension is not a listed side effect so you might want to discuss this with your doctor.

Subj: How fast to lose weight
Date: 6/29/2006
I have taken a weight pill before and shame on me, I cannot think of the name. I also took a water pill and a shot called HCG. Yes it is the hormone pregnant women make, has anyone heard of it? I later got pregnant and was low on progesterone, wonder if it could have caused it. The doctor told me that this bontril does not give energy, is that right? I thought it did. I weigh 170 how fast can I lose weight? Is 20pounds in a month realistic?

Krystal

AskDocWeb: Yes, loosing 20 pounds a month sounds fine. Problems start showing up when people try to lose more than a pound a day. The slower you lose weight the more likely you are to keep it off.

Subj: Anorexic?
Date: 6/29/2006
OMG to Jessica, I did not think it was healthy to lose weight that quick and 140 and you lost 30pds, wow that is great did you really eat? How long do it take to feel the energy. I want to know what you did to lose it, be careful. I was anorexic and did not notice that I had stopped eating. And now have many health problems BE CAREFUL!

Subj: All in our head?
Date: 6/29/2006
Is it all in our head that is works? Is that what makes it work?

KRIS

AskDocWeb: No it’s not all in your head. That would be a placebo affect. Prescription drugs like this work no matter what you believe.

Subj: Bontril blurred vision
Date: 6/29/2006
I have been taking bontril for about 2 weeks. Before I took a version of bontril and experience some blurred vision. Is this a symptom? I had lasik surgery before I first started taking another version of bontril and had to have it done again because my vision changed so drastically. Does this sound right?

Tiffaney

AskDocWeb: One other person reported a problem with their vision while on Bontril. It seems rare but it is possible.

Subj: Trouble sleeping
Date: 7/1/2006
This is my 2nd day on bontril and I am having major trouble sleeping. I also have noticed a mood change with my husband….will my side effects get better? Oh yeah, I also feel a tingle sensation near my nose.

Polly

AskDocWeb: It sounds like you should talk to your doctor about changing your dose, and taking it in the morning. Don’t lose your sleep and suffer from mood swings due to a weight loss pill. It’s not worth it, especially when there are so many alternatives.

Subj: Lost 30 pounds
Date: 7/7/2006
I have been on bontril for 1 yr. and have lost 30 lbs. I work out 3 days per week. The only side effect I have experienced is nausea after eating poorly. Should I take a break from bontril if there are no serious side effects? Also I had a complete bloodwork done and the Dr. said I’m “textbook” perfect in all categories.

Shanna

AskDocWeb: That depends on how close you are to your target weight. At some point you should be able to stop the Bontril and just continue with your exercise program and continue eating properly.

Subj: Wonderful appetite suppressant
Date: 7/12/2006
I’ve been on Bontril for 2 months. I feel that this is a wonderful appetite suppressant. My doc told me to make sure I drink lots, and lots of water. There have been a few times that I haven’t and felt not so great, almost lethargic but once I start drinking water I feel better. Also no matter how busy I am I try to feed myself or else I get a little dizzy. So, drink water, eat healthy and exercise is my theory because I know I won’t be on this med forever and I’m taking this time to jump start my system. I am 43 and have been trying to lose 35 pounds since I gained it from my mid 30s. I’ve lost 14 pounds so far.

Vivian

Subj: Doesn’t work as well 2nd time
Date: 7/18/2006
I lost over 50 pounds on bontril, after a year I kept it off. But it has been a year and a half and I have put 20 pounds back on. So off to the doc I go for once another try, But this time it doesn’t work so well. Why is that? I only take one a day. Can you take more then that? I personally love the control it gives me with food. I highly recommend it for all. It truly works wonderful.

Lanita

AskDocWeb: It sounds like you may have developed a tolerance for Bontril. If that’s the case then you should talk to your doctor about an alternative weight loss product.

Subj: Bontril hair loss?
Date: 7/28/2006
Has any one experiencing thinning hair while on bontril?

Julie

AskDocWeb: Yes, a few others have reported hair loss while on Bontril.

Subj: Old Bontril?
Date: 7/28/2006
I took Bontril 3 years ago and loved it. I lost weight, however have gained some back due to alot of personal stress in my life. I still have a full bottle that I received from my doctor that I never took. Is it still safe to use? The date is Nov. 2003 and Jan. 2004. Thanks.

Susie

P.S. What is the best and safest site to purchase Bontril?

AskDocWeb: These are no good now, toss them in the garbage. (Do not flush drugs down the toilet) Buy them at your local pharmacy, it’s safer.

Subj: Bontril trouble sleeping
Date: 7/30/2006
I just started Bontril 1 week ago and it has definitely curbed my appetite but have had trouble sleeping. I am going to try taking every other day and see if I can sleep better.

Subj: Bontril and drug tests
Date: 8/4/2006
I’m currently taking Bontril. My job requires random drug screening tests. Can Bontril show positive in a urine exam for amphetamines?
Thanks
Chris

AskDocWeb: Bontril is not on the list for causing a false positive drug test.

Subj: Bontril concerns
Date: 8/10/2006
I took Bontril for a month and stopped for a few weeks and recently started taking it again. I have lost 20 lbs in 2 months. I do have some dry mouth which does make me drink more water which is good. I eat three small but healthy meals a day and I do weight bearing exercises. I do have decreased appetite but I make sure I eat healthy. I don’t have the bad side effects I had with any other diet prescription or over the counter diet pills. I couldn’t take any of those they made me feel CRAZY. I have had problems with addiction to other medications in the past like anti anxiety drugs. Found side effects from going off were terrible. I’m a bit concerned after reading that they can be addictive. I have 20 more lbs to loose and that will put me at 150. I am 58 years old and my cholesterol was very high so instead of opting for pills for that I decided to get some weight off, exercise and diet, plenty of water and the help of this appetite suppressant. Don’t drink a lot of caffeine while on this because it does increase some of the nervousness that I don’t get unless I have to much caffeine through out the day. My intent is to get my weight down, my cholesterol level down and then stop the Bontril and continue my new way of eating and exercising. What are the side effects of stopping and should it be tapered down like a pill every other day and then every third day. etc. What happens if after 2 months you just stop it cold Turkey?

Donna

AskDocWeb: Fatigue and depression can occur if you have been taking a high dosage for more than a couple of months and quit abruptly. We suggest you ask your doctor if what you are taking is considered a high dose and if he recommends tapering the medication down for a week or two before discontinuing.
