Subj: Bontril side effects
Date: 3/26/2007
I had to stop taking bontril even though I lost so much weight on it. The side effects for me were terrible-headaches and jaw clenching/grinding. It was nice to lose all the weight but I almost felt like I was taking speed. Even though I continued to exercise after I stopped taking it, my metabolism was so messed up that the weight came back on. The headaches and jaw issues stopped once I didn’t take it.

Subj: 2 weeks
Date: 4/2/2007
I have been taking this for 2 weeks now and I walk 2 miles everyday. When will I see some weight loss. I still get hungry.

Sbutler

AskDocWeb: That varies with each individual. Bontril doesn’t get rid of your appetite completely, just reduce it.

Subj: Is Bontril safer?
Date: 4/4/2007
I have been using tenuate 75mg now for six years. I know it is addicting but is so hard to get off, I would like to wean off and try Bontril. Do you think this is safer to be on bontril until I can kick the habit completely? Thank you,

Gail

AskDocWeb: That is something your doctor will have to decide.

Subj: Spaced out on Bontril
Date: 4/14/2007
I was on Bontril for 2 weeks and on the 3rd week I decided to look it up and came upon a website that listed the side effects. Low and behold I figured why I was feeling “spaced out”, getting really bad headaches and stomach cramps. I decided not to continue on Bontril. A pill that interferes w/ the hypothalamus and CNS (Central Nervous System)? no thank you ! If I want to lose weight, I’ll just put the fork down! instead of messing with the noggin. Good luck to all of you that don’t have the side effects.

Subj: Abnormal heart rhythm
Date: 4/15/2007
I used Bontril on and off in the past with pretty good results. The problem is that one of the last times I was on it my heart started beating extremely rapidly for short periods of time. This later returned to normal. With the exception of an occasional extra palpitation here and there this had never happened before. My EKG was normal. Question – I would like to use Bontril again but am afraid that it will cause a life threatening abnormal heart rhythm?

Susan

AskDocWeb: Right, if it did it once it could do it again.

Subj: Lost 12lbs
Date: 4/23/2007
I have been taking bontril for 30days. I have lost 12lbs and have not altered my diet or exercised the way I know I should (busy with buying a house!) This month I plan on working out at least 3 times a week and being more attentive to what I eat. It’s important to have healthy habits in place so when I come off the treatment I don’t gain this weight back! The first week I could sleep a wink but that went away after the first 10 days or so. Just stick with it!

Subj: Effexor XL and Bontril?
Date: 4/25/2007
I have been using Bontril on and off. The first month I took it I lost 7-10 lbs., with no side effects. I then regained the weight and asked to use it again, this time nothing, with some above side effects. I also take Effexor XL and have had cramping. Is this too much of a bad sign to continue? And will I have to change Rx to keep taking it? One more thing, my doctor put me on Birth Control Pills, will this interfere with the Bontril and Effexor? Will I ever lose the weight again? Or should I use something else?

IAC

AskDocWeb: You should talk with your doctor about the use of an anti-depressant with Bontril, not a good idea. Your birth control pill will not affect the use of an anti-depressant.

Subj: Bontril and High BP
Date: 4/25/2007
I went to a weight loss clinic and I take med for High BP, also Elavil for migraines – this Dr prescribed Bontril 105 mg and that is what I wanted but looking on the web I am seeing negative things for those with High BP – What is your advice? Today is my first day on it and it seems to be working great but I am concerned about my blood pressure.

Tammy

AskDocWeb: You need to be very cautious in the use of Bontril with a high BP. You might want to get something to check your blood pressure at least twice a week. If it rises, contact your doctor because you may have to discontinue use.

Subj: Bloating?
Date: 4/25/2007
Can the use of bontril cause bloating?

Linda

AskDocWeb: Yes it can but there are also other causes for bloating.

Subj: Bontril
Date: 4/27/2007
I start taking this tomorrow AM. Will keep you updated.

Subj: First three days are hell
Date: 4/27/2007
I have taken Bontril on and off for years to maintain my weight. It works great! I “know” the first three days are hell, you can’t sleep at night, and you are so very wired, but after that, you settle in, and sleep well at night. You really do have to eat. I noticed when I don’t eat, I don’t lose weight, when I do eat, I lose more weight. Also, understand that it is addictive from the beginning. If you feel like you are addictive, stop, remind yourself that they are just pills and if you didn’t have them, you WILL be o.k. I have recommended these pills to a lot of people. They aren’t overwhelming, too strong, and they really do what they are meant to do. You do have to make yourself keep track of time, SLEEP, when you are supposed to, or just lay down until you do. The more tired you become, the more irritable, and then a chain reaction starts. Just use common sense, and you should be good to go. I myself will continue to take them. good luck.

Subj: Dry mouth
Date: 4/30/2007
I have been taking Bontril for 3 months and lost 22 lbs. I am 55 years old and this is the first thing that has worked for me in 20 years. I just could not stay with a diet. Most of the side effects subsided within 3 weeks. I now only experience dry mouth, which helps me drink more fluids. The weight loss was very slow at first, but after 3 weeks it started to improve. How long can I take this medication or how should I wean off of it. I have no desire to regain the weight.

Donna

AskDocWeb: In that case you need to change your life style by learning to eat nutritious, balanced meals and adding activities that burn calories. How long you can take it varies with the individual but remember, Bontril is only for short-term use. Your doctor should monitor your progress and give you some guidelines as to what works best for you.

Subj: LA Weight Loss
Date: 5/16/2007
I am doing LA Weight Loss for 4 weeks and have only lost 2 lbs. I am doing weights and know some is muscle, but not losing as I always have been able to before. I gained the weight taking Effexor, which also made me have high blood pressure for the first time in my life. I have been off the Effexor for 10 months now. I was given that drug for post-menopausal symptoms(hot flashes, heart palpitations, etc.) It was an unpleasant experience being on that drug. My BP runs about 130/84 now with Hyzaar. Is it safe for me to take Bontril for just a couple of weeks? I just need a kick-start. I have cut my calories in half for the last month with no results. I am becoming very frustrated. I do exercise every day and have a very healthy diet…only fresh fruit and vegetables and fish or chicken. Thank you

Paula

AskDocWeb: You may be making more progress than you can see on a scale that only measures how much you weight. If you are burning fat and building muscle, that kind of progress won’t show up on a scale because muscle weighs more than fat. You’ll have to ask your doctor if using Bontril is safe in your situation.

Subj: Alcohol with Bontril?
Date: 5/16/2007
I have just been prescribed Bontril. Can you consume alcohol with this drug, and in what moderation?

Karen

AskDocWeb: Alcohol can increase the possibility of experiencing side effects. In most cases using alcohol will add to your weight, that’s where the phrase “beer belly” originated.

Subj: I LOVE IT!!!
Date: 5/18/2007
I take it 1st thing in the morning. I take a really good multivitamin. 10 weeks = 30 lbs. Side effects – Makes me thirsty = drink more water. Type 2 diabetic – blood sugar has not gone over 100 in 10 weeks.

Subj: Hungrier than ever
Date: 5/19/2007
I have been taking Bontril for about six weeks, and all of a sudden, I am hungrier than I ever remember…nothing has changed….is this normal? What should I do?

Sherry

AskDocWeb: This is part of the reason that Bontril is only for short-term use. It sounds like you have built up a tolerance for the drug and it will no longer work for you. Time to find an alternative.

Subj: Bontril and Lipotropic?
Date: 5/23/2007
I am just starting treatment with Bontril SR 105mg and a Lipotropic injection that you take every 7 days. Has anyone any information on similar programs? Ten years ago I was prescribed Phentermine and am curious why the same doc switched to this new regime. He says I only need to lose 10 lbs., I think I need to lose 30! Anything will be helpful.

Cindy

Subj: Leg cramps
Date: 5/24/2007
I started taking Bontril about 3 weeks ago and now I am having severe leg cramps and I have tried everything to relieve it and nothing is working, I have tried calcium and potassium and magnesium supplements, nothing is working. What do you think is wrong with me? I’ve had slight leg cramps for several years but nothing like this!

Marsha

AskDocWeb: Some cramps are caused by a lack of liquid. You know that you should increase the amount of water you drink while taking Bontril. Anyway, we suggest you consult with your doctor because muscle cramping can be an indication of serious neurological illness and that requires professional treatment.

Subj: Lost 10 lbs
Date: 5/24/2007
I have been taking Bontril for about 3 months and have lost 10 lbs. I have more energy than my 3 year old grandson and anyone else around me. I feel 20 years younger. My doctor monitors me closely. I would recommend this to woman who are menopausal who have gained alot of weight and have no energy. I am taking the once a day pill early in the morning. I drink lots of water and eat regularly.

Lou

Subj: Sore muscles
Date: 5/30/2007
I also noticed sore muscles in the neck area.

Subj: I like Bontril
Date: 6/1/2007
Went to the Dr. today to weight and get a refill. I’ve been on it for 5 weeks and lost 7 lbs. Possibility that my Lexapro is causing me not to loose as quickly as I want. We are discussing stopping the use of the anti- depressant (only 10 mg), for my baby weight is the reason I’m so “down” all the time. But something to think about, if you take anti depressants. I used to take phenteremine- before I got on lexapro, but they don’t mix. I think I like bontril better anyway.
