Subj: Had to stop because of blood pressure
Date: 6/2/2007
I have been using Bontril for over 2 months and have lost 18lbs. That is great! I am sad to say that I will stop taking Bontril as of today because unfortunately, my blood pressure, is so elevated I feel I am about to die from a heart attack. This drug is effective but with really bad side effects. Please use caution and monitor your blood pressure every day while on this medication.

Subj: Bontril and Soma
Date: 6/7/2007
I am taking Bontril and Soma together, one for weight loss and one for severe back pain, can this be harmful to me? I am not abusing either one, only going by the recommended dosage… Suggestions?
Leann
AskDocWeb: Talk to your doctor before combining any two drugs. Not everyone can take the same combinations, what may be safe for someone else could cost you your life.
Subj: Strange dreams/nightmares
Date: 6/11/2007
I have been taking Bontril on and off for about 2 weeks, lately I have been experiencing strange dreams/nightmares. Does anyone know if this is a possible side effect?
Theresa
AskDocWeb: We’ve heard of others having nightmares too, but it isn’t a listed side effect.
Subj: Stomach pain
Date: 6/30/2007
I have been taking bontril for approx. 3 months and have had excellent results, but I accidentally took two pills yesterday and today I’m having terrible stomach pain when I stand and diarrhea. Is this a side effect if you’ve taken too many? P.S. I take the extended release type. I also take prozac.
Hayley
AskDocWeb: Yes, stomach pain is a side effect of overdose.
Subj: Benicar and Bontril?
Date: 6/30/2007
I am currently taking Benicar HCT 12.5 and was going to be seeing a diet Doctor to get some Bontril SR, should I stop the Benicar while I am on Bontril? I have taken the Bontril years ago before I was on the Benicar and it did not give me the jitters or raise my blood pressure. I also take Lunesta to sleep and didn’t want the Elvis thing going on with the diet pills. My friend is on them and takes Ambien to sleep and hasn’t had problems. Please give me your input.
Taunia
AskDocWeb: Since you may run into a problem because of the hypertension, please consult with your physician about how best to accomplish your weight loss.
Subj: Double his dosage
Date: 7/2/2007
My boyfriend has been taking Bontril for almost a year now with very little weight loss. He recently asked his doctor/nurse practitioner to double his dosage. She did!! As a matter of fact, none of the reputable pharmacies will fill it double for him. Only a old local pharmacy in a small town will do it. Am I the only one who finds it dangerous for her to have doubled the dose? He recently experienced rapid heart rate while trying to sleep one night. It scared him enough to listen about only taking one a day not two. Please advise.
Sandra
AskDocWeb: The fact that reputable pharmacies won’t fill his order should indicate the problem. Using Bontril for more than a few months sounds like drug abuse.
Subj: Mood swings?
Date: 7/5/2007
Has anyone ever experienced mood swings while on bonril?
Hotto
AskDocWeb: Yes.
Subj: complex cyst
Date: 7/14/2007
I took Bontril for 4 weeks and my breast started hurting and were very enlarged and red and warm to touch, I discontinued them and went to the Dr 2 weeks later as the problem never went away and I now have a complex cyst that I am having biopsyed after the steps of testing to get to this point. They say it could be the effects from Bontril what do you think? I am very scared.

Subj: Thanks Bontril!
Date: 7/17/2007
I’ve been using Bontril Sr for about 8 weeks now and love it! It’s a great short term solution for weight gain. My side effects have been mild it seems compared to what I’ve read here, with the exception of increased sweating. My first few weeks I was sweating for what seemed like forever. I’ve lost 18 pounds so far, but I also train heavily at the gym and do my cardio 4+ times a week. I’ve also learned to modify my eating habits and learning to eat “clean”. I’m looking forward to losing more weight this month since I just recently quit smoking cigarettes and am afraid of the weight gain. It’s the reason why my doctor prescribed it for me to begin with. There was one week in between prescriptions where I was not taking the drug and felt no signs of withdrawals or “addiction”. Is there a moment when this drug becomes addictive? How does one tell? And can I take Bontril for 180 days straight if I needed too, versus just the 90 days? Anyway, I recommend it for people needing to lose more than 30 pounds AS LONG AS YOU COMBINE IT WITH EXCERCISE AND DIET!!!! There is no such thing as a quick fix or miracle drug for weight loss. Change the way you look at food and your body will become your friend. I’m 41 now and wish I knew 20 years ago what I know now. And I’ve never looked better than I do today! Bontril really does help suppress the appetite, especially great when you’ve just quit smoking! Thanks Bontril!!
Connie
AskDocWeb: One reason why it’s limited to short term is that the body builds up a tolerance for it and it stops working.
Subj: Lexapro and Bontril?
Date: 7/25/2007
I have been taking Lexapro for 2 months now and feel like a new person, less anxious and things don’t get to me at all. Not robotic, just less of an edge in that stressful life we all lead. Part of my stress is a terrible weight gain over the last 2 years that STILL has me hiding inside my body-I FEEL so good but when I look at myself in the mirror, I LOOK terrible. I want to ask my Dr for Bontril. I just had a recent physical with only my weight as an issue. I have gained more weight on Lexapro – Can these medications be taken together? Is there another, better, drug for what I need? Thank you very much!
L
AskDocWeb: Sorry, probably not, usually an anti-depressant can’t be taken with a weight loss pill.
Subj: Is Bontril addictive?
Date: 7/31/2007
Is Bontril addictive? I have a history following back surgery of being addictive to Darvocet.
Sheila
AskDocWeb: Bontril is contraindicated for those who have been addicted to any other drug.
Subj: Bontril price increase
Date: 8/14/2007
I have been taking Bontril for almost 6 months. I am 57 years old and tried prescription diet pills in my 20’s-30’s, but they kept me too hyper and I talked constantly! With Bontril, I have lost about 45 pounds. I take only 1 per day and feel so much better. I do tend to talk more than usual (not like the old pills). I do have a dry mouth, but I drink more liquids now and I have a lot more energy. I was almost too tired to do anything after work before I started these pills. I have had regular check-ups during the months I have taken them, with no real adverse problems. My question is the cost of Bontril SR 105MG capsules. A 30 day supply had been $30 and it is now $47 at Walgreen’s. Why was there such an increase in price on these?
J.
AskDocWeb: Pure speculation on our part: It looks like a case of supply and demand. If a competing product (like Ionamin) goes off the market, then all those people that were taking Ionamin now have to choose between the remaining available products. When we have less competition they can increase their profit margin by raising prices.
Subj: Anyone else?
Date: 8/16/2007
I started taking bontril a week ago. I have lost 6 lbs., I drink more water now. It controls my appetite some. The only bad side effect is that if you don’t eat within an hour of your dosage, your head will spin. It does give u more energy. I also receive vitamin b6 and b12 shots to give more energy and burn holes in my fat. I was wondering does anyone else receive this procedure and do they think it’s too much!

Subj: Any suggestions?
Date: 8/22/2007
Hello all – long time lurker this is my first post. Many thanks to others for all the great data! Following a health scare I’ve been seriously considering various means of dramatic weight loss. I’m looking for some input on different methods. I’ve done some research and am considering possibly using a supplement or herbal method like the hoodia patch, possibly high intensity interval training, or some combination. Any suggestions or input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot to everyone.

AskDocWeb: We would like you to consider the slow approach rather than a fast track. Making small changes gradually is more effective than loosing weight fast and then gaining it back again.
Subj: Bontril problems
Date: 8/24/2007
When I first used Bontril I lost at least 50 pounds in a matter of months. It gave me energy and kept the weight off. However, I became very addictive to it. It made me very hyper and sometimes cluttered my thinking. Without it I would gain the weight right back and become extremely tired. In order to take myself off this drug I had to stay home for more then a week and sleep most of the time. I only stopped taking it a few months before I was planning on having a baby. The affects of this drug on babies is unknown but from my experience I think it is definitely must be dangerous. I gained extra weight on top of my pregnancy because of the discontinue use of the med. After a few months after the baby I tired it again to loose the weight and it didn’t work for me the way it did before, so I stopped taking it. I have aunts who have taken this medication and now have all kinds of medical problems. I have not been able to loose the weight ever since my body was expose to this medication, and I have had heart problems and breathing problems.
