Subj: Multi-vitamin?
Date: 8/30/2007
Do you recommend taking a multi-vitamin with bontril to possibly offset side effects?

Cautious

AskDocWeb: Based on the information we currently have, yes, those on a diet should take a good multi-vitamin with iron unless there is a medical reason not to do that.

Subj: I lost 53 pounds
Date: 8/31/2007
Hello: I have been on Bontril since the end of January 2007, I weighed 206 pounds. On the last doctor visit, August, 29, I had lost 53 pounds. I am a lifetime weight watchers member and used the same diet along with Bontril. I was able to do what I could not without the help of an appetite suppressant like Bontril- I knew what to eat but couldn’t do it because my appetite was out of control. This medication was able to bring me in control without surgery. I look at people today and wonder why they have decided to be obese – you don’t have to. I have recommended the medication to anyone that has a weight problem. In the first 4 or 5 weeks I may have had dry mouth – so what, I drank more water!!! And what is wrong with that? I am under a doctor’s care – he looks at me at every 5 weeks. He says that he wishes everyone was as successful as me! I feel great – do it!!

Subj: Bontril advocate
Date: 9/1/2007
HI-Bontril has literally given me my life back! I am a middle aged woman and have problems with low metabolism(hypothyroid), I also am sensitive to medications and cant even take OTC cold meds because it used to send my heart beat into fast uncomfortable rhythms. The only side effect I have experienced is dry mouth ( I drink plenty of water now) and I look great, lost 50 pounds and am active and enjoying life. I am a Bontril advocate. I am not depressed and I really enjoy life with my newfound energy, even makes me think sharper! Give it a chance this medication is great.

Subj: Still very hungry
Date: 9/2/2007
I have been taking bontril for three days now and I am still very hungry after I eat. How long does it take for the appetite suppression to kick in?

Maria

AskDocWeb: The affect begins within hours so it should have kicked in by now. If it doesn’t work for you then contact your health care provider.

Subj: I love it!
Date: 9/11/2007
I have been taking Bontril for about 4 weeks now and I have lost 18 pounds. I still get hungry sometimes during the day, but that is usually because I haven’t eaten enough. And when I get hungry, I don’t have the urge to overeat. I just eat until I am satisfied and have no problem stopping. These pills also really help me to wake up in the morning and have enough energy to start my day. I love it!

Subj: The best
Date: 9/18/2007
The best thing that ever happened to me. I have been on bontril for just over four months. I have lost 44lbs!!! I started out at 214 and now am down to 170 and I feel great. I’m now taking the pill every other day. I change my diet (not craving burgers anymore) and started walking. I did start taking b12 too I was a little low per my DR. I had few side effects from the bontril. The first four days I had a little chest discomfort like I had eaten way to much pasta or something. That would start about three hours after I took the medication and last only about 20 minutes. After the fourth day I never felt that feeling again. I have noticed a few skin breakouts but nothing a little cover up can’t fix. Overall I’m so happy I was placed on this med. With the few side effects I had my life has improved 100%. I even came off all my diabetic medication and I feel so comfortable being me!

Subj: Allergic reaction
Date: 9/18/2007
I took Bontril a couple of years ago and loved it until I started breaking out in hives. My diet doctor said it was probably from the yellow dye and switched me to fastin. My regular doctor will on prescribe Bontril and I would like to start taking it again, but I’m worried about the reaction to the dye. My pharmacy said that the generic brand for Bontril has the yellow dye, but not the name brand. Is this correct? Has anyone else experienced an allergic reaction? Is anyone else taking this that is allergic to yellow #5? Thanks,

Katrina

AskDocWeb: There haven’t been any reported, yet.

Subj: Tooth pain, tense jaws, aching ears, hearing problem and insomnia
Date: 9/20/2007
I took Bontril for 3 weeks, I’m experiencing tooth pain, tense jaws, aching ears, sometimes hearing problem and insomnia. I haven’t took a Bontril in 3 weeks will my problems get better, Is it a nerve problem?

Deborah

AskDocWeb: Of all your symptoms only the insomnia is listed as a side effect but that also can have other causes. Altogether your symptoms could be attributed to just one cause, jaw misalignment or TMJ. You may want to check with your dentist for a referral. Many dentists specialize in this treatment (called temporomandibular jaw alignment)

Subj: No reduction in appetite
Date: 9/21/2007
Taking this makes me really sleepy. Also have a strange taste in my mouth and am craving all things icy. Noticed a slight jerk in my head and arms on occasion and thought it might be too much lithium but now have read it is probably this medication. No reduction in appetite after 1 week of taking regularly. please advise.

Subj: I think I’m addicted
Date: 9/25/2007
I’ve been taking Bontril for about 3 months, I think I’m addicted. This drug makes me feel great, but I think I won’t be able to stop taking it. I am starting to get worried that this may be dangerous to my health.

Subj: Hemorrhoids?
Date: 9/26/2007
I have just started bontril and yep it does control my appetite but quiet recently I started having hemorrhoids leading to rectal bleeding. Can this possibly be a side effect?

Connie

AskDocWeb: It’s not a side effect but this is something you should report it to your doctor.

Subj: Headaches and muscle tension
Date: 9/26/2007
I have been using it for about 6 months and have lost 10 pounds. I so seem to have more headaches and muscle tension. Could this be from the bontril? I am also taking Ali!

Amber

AskDocWeb: Headaches are listed as one of the possible side effects of Bontril that may go away with continued use, if it persists or becomes bothersome then check with your doctor.

Subj: Hair loss with Bontril?
Date: 10/10/2007
Can you tell me what are the chances of hair loss while taking Bontril? I have had problems with hair loss/breakage due to other medications side effects. I don’t want to take Bontril if it is a true side effect.

Melissa

AskDocWeb: The manufacturer does not list hair loss as a side effect of Bontril but that doesn’t mean it can’t happen. Several people have reported hair loss here.

Subj: Bontril
Date: 10/13/2007
I have taken bontril for nearly 6 months but only three days per week. I found that I was clinching my teeth so I reduced the amount and talked to the doctor about it. I continued taking it. I stopped clinching my teeth but got moderate pain where my bottom jaw attaches to the skull. (TMJ) I told the doctor but she says she had never heard of it. Not from the pills. I stopped the pills in 3 or 4 days pain gone. Took pills again. Now the pain is there all the time. I quit pills 2 weeks ago and the pain is still there, do not know what to do. Will the pain go away?

Barbara

AskDocWeb: Bontril has not been reported to cause TMJ. You may want to get a panoramic x-ray from your dentist to see if there’s anything wrong.

Subj: Insomnia, faster heart-beating, jittery
Date: 10/15/2007
I started taking Bontril 5 days ago and my side effects so far are the insomnia, faster heart-beating/jittery, and sometimes I can’t concentrate or spit the right words out. I’m getting married in 6 months, so my doctor thought I should give this a try – I have about 20 lbs. to my goal weight (currently 142, want to be about 120), so I think adding Bontril to my exercise regimen and diet will help do the trick.

Subj: Back on Bontril
Date: 10/22/2007
The past two months I started taking bontril and the last month I went to phentermine and now back on bontril. The phentermine upset my stomach and major dry mouth. The bontril I have less dry mouth. And no upset stomach. I am constipated on both meds. I lost 10 lbs. on bontril and 8 on phentermine. My prescription as of today is bontril the generic (phendimetrazine) 3 times a day. So I will see how it goes.

Subj: Bontril hair loss
Date: 10/23/2007
I took Bontril for a week, and lost 10 pounds. I stopped because I noticed every time I combed my hair, it was falling out. Since I stopped, my hair does not come out when I comb it.

Subj: Insomnia and shaking hands
Date: 10/25/2007
I’ve been on Bontril for about 2 weeks now; my main side effects have been insomnia and shaking hands. However, the insomnia subsided after a few days, and the shaking has lessened but not disappeared completely. I do have more energy, and I’m noticing my appetite is under control, which helps lower the calorie intake. I’ve also lost about 4 pounds, so that’s very promising! I’m getting married in 6 months and have about 15-20 more pounds I’d like to lose, so I’m confident the Bontril, along with my increased exercise and healthier eating, will help me look fabulous in that size 4 (dare I wish for size 2?) wedding dress!
