Report on Calendula Side Effects and Usage
Calendula
Natural health supplements sometimes have unexpected side effects or interactions with medication that can lead to adverse reactions that are sometimes life threatening. The following is a list of cautions that you should be aware of before using Calendula (Calendula arvensis). These are referred to as drug/herb interactions.
Warning 1 – Counterindications: Calendula plants are known to cause allergic reactions and should be avoided during pregnancy. There is also a concern that it might cause a miscarriage.
Warning 2 – CNS depressants (Sedative medications): Calendula might interact with drugs that cause sleepiness. Taking calendula along with sedative medications might cause too much sleepiness.
Some sedative medications include clonazepam (Klonopin), lorazepam (Ativan), phenobarbital (Donnatal), zolpidem (Ambien), and others.
Warning 3 – Surgery: Calendula might cause too much drowsiness if combined with medications used during and after surgery. Stop taking calendula at least 2 weeks before a scheduled surgery.
Warning 4 – Allergy alert: Calendula may cause an allergic reaction in people who are sensitive to the Asteraceae/Compositae family. Members of this family include chrysanthemums, daisies, marigolds, ragweed, and many others. If you have allergies, be sure to check with your healthcare provider before taking calendula.

Calendula contains the following nutrients: Carotenoids, Lutein, Quercetin, Vitamin C, Saponins, and Lycopene.
Side Effects of Calendula
Aside from possible allergic reactions calendula has no reported side effects.
As with any herb, a serious allergic reaction is possible. Seek immediate medical attention if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction. These may include a rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.
