Subj: Reaction to Celebrex?
Date: 12/28/2007
I started taking celebrex 2 weeks ago. I now have a reaction similar to Shingles but no blisters. Severe pain on skin, girdle location, right side only, burning and warm. Could this be a side effect?
Bobbi
AskDocWeb: Not if it’s just on the right side, if you had a reaction it would be all over your body.
Subj: Blood pressure spike?
Date: 1/4/2008
Can celebrex make your blood pressure spike? Seems like it does in me. Is this rare? Does it mix ok with vicodin? Thx,
Willy
AskDocWeb: As with all NSAIDS, Celebrex can lead to the onset of hypertension where none existed before or the worsening of an existing hypertensive condition. Either of these can lead to an increased chance of cardiovascular events. Blood pressure should be monitored during the use of Celebrex.
Subj: Significant weight gain
Date: 1/7/2008
I have been on Celebrex for about two months. I take 200-400 mgs daily. I noticed a significant weight gain over the past month. I DO NOT gain weight. I have had four children and still maintain a 105 lb. body at 5’3″. I have gained about 8-10 lbs., with 4 lbs. coming just this week. I know it has to be the Celebrex. That is the only thing that has changed for me.

Subj: Does not retain information as well
Date: 1/11/2008
My son is taking Celebrex and he has been trying to study for an exam. He finds he does not retain the information as well as he used to. He has been taking this medication for six months.

Subj: Celebrex
Date: 1/11/2008
My mom had a kidney removed and the Dr. told her to continue her celebrex but when her levels continue to rise after her surgery she was told to go of the celebrex. They believe the celebrex was the cause. She has been off celebrex for two weeks but the levels are still going up slightly.

Subj: Gained 20lbs in 2 months
Date: 1/13/2008
I started taking celebrex last October. I gained 20 lbs. in 2 months. I am 51 and have never had a weight problem. It was prescribed for a bone spur on my foot. I also had food cravings and ate yogurt for every meal. Any connection that you are aware of? I am stopping the celebrex immediately. Can you tell me how long it will take to get back to my normal weight?
Faith
AskDocWeb: It is possible to lose that in just one month but how long it will take you to do that depends on your willingness to diet and exercise.
Subj: Headaches
Date: 1/15/2008
I have been taking Celebrex for about a month now, 200 mg a day for cervical stenosis. 2 to 3 weeks later Leg pain (similar to ciatica) which I had mild on occasion became severe at night keeping me awake. It would bother me when lying down, reclining or driving the car, also standing still. I stopped the celebrex yesterday to see if the headaches had gone away. Now the leg pain (Thighs) is back to very minimal, should I stay off celebrex? Is this a know side effect?
Richard
AskDocWeb: In clinical trials, 15.8% of patients on Celebrex experience headaches.
Subj: Works great
Date: 1/16/2008
I had to start Celebrex for arthritis in my hips. It was so painful I couldn’t sleep, sit, walk, do anything. After just a few days the pain was almost gone but I did notice my clothes getting tighter. I have only gained a few pounds since I have been on it, but after reading all these reviews about weight gain, I only take it when I have to. Seems to work better for me. But for the pain of arthritis, it works great.

Subj: Injury that can’t be diagnosed
Date: 1/23/2008
I’ve been taking Celebrex for about 10 months. For a while I was also taking a pain medication (Ultram) and a muscle relaxer (Zanaflex); all 3 for an injury that can’t seem to be diagnosed. I have felt nervous and anxious, have had dry red eyes, my face is more red than normal, and feel just “fuzzy” in the head since starting the meds. I have stopped taking the muscle relaxer, and only take the pain medication on the weekends and still have the same above mentioned issues. I’m wondering if the Celebrex is the culprit. I just switched back to ibuprofen to see if this is the case. It has only been 2 days, but I do feel a little different.

Subj: Celebrex for wrist condition?
Date: 2/1/2008
I had brain hemorrhage 1 year ago. Everything is ok no after effects. Can I take celebrex for wrist condition? The only medication I take is Diovan for BP Thanks,
-TG
AskDocWeb: We found no counterindications or drug interactions but only your doctor can say what the best medication is for your particular situation.
Subj: I’m between a rock and a hard place
Date: 2/4/2008
I’ve been taking Celebrex for approx. 5 months and have observed 2 things – first, that it is a great drug for pain relief for my hurniated disk in my back, but the down side is that I have gained about 15-20 pounds! Now I’m between a rock and a hard place (albeit, I’m very padded).

Subj: Celebrex and cancer
Date: 2/18/2008
Does celebrex cause cancer?
Martha
AskDocWeb: No, on the contrary, the FDA has approved Celebrex as a preventative for some types of cancer, such as colon cancer.
Subj: Problems Celebrex causes
Date: 2/20/2008
I read your entire website and am amazed at how many medical problems I have from taking Celebrex. I must have every 2% of the population problems Celebrex causes. We are all in serious trouble. I too feel depressed, exhausted and still in pain. Gaining weight just adds to the misery. I am going to slowly wean myself off the Celebrex and try some of the things you suggested. Perhaps I will even find a new doctor who hasn’t grown deaf to my painful problems. I have found that exercise in a heated pool helps to build muscle in my knees and the heated water gives wonderful relief even if it is only for a few hours. Ketoprofen (prescription) rubbed on painful joints also helps me to a small degree.

Subj: Metal mouth
Date: 2/22/2008
I have been using celebrex for only three weeks and it’s been wonderful. However, I’m experiencing extreme “metal mouth”! Have you heard of this side effect? Thanks,
Lynn
AskDocWeb: Yes, Celebrex is only one of many drugs that can do that. Here is a list of other drugs that can cause metal mouth.
Subj: I HATE this extra weight
Date: 2/22/2008
I am in an OA Study taking Celebrex 200 mg bid for this Study. I have severe OA in my lumbar & hips caused by statins (Zocor & Lipitor). For 2 years I was practically suicidal from pain caused by bone spurs on the tops of my femurs and the OA in my lumbar & hips. I walked with a cane. I started Celebrex 6 weeks ago. I got pain relief almost immediately after starting the first dose. BUT: I have gained 20 lbs so far! I HATE this extra weight – I have a fragile bone structure and cannot handle this extra weight. I tried to go down to 200 mg once a day – could hardly walk. Between statins & Celebrex my life as an athlete and performance artist is OVER.

Subj: Drowsiness?
Date: 2/23/2008
Can celebrex cause drowsiness?
Cathy
AskDocWeb: Typically Celebrex does not cause drowsiness but that is one of the symptoms of overdose so you should report this to your doctor.
Subj: Monthly period?
Date: 2/24/2008
Hi, I was just wondering if Celebrex has any effect on the women monthly period? Thank you,
Fotoun
AskDocWeb: Celebrex has no affect on the monthly period.
Subj: Celebrex very effective
Date: 2/24/2008
I find Celebrex very effective in reducing the pain associated with osteo arthritis in my spine. I take 200 Mg/day (one capsule) and have found no side effects. Because of my condition I rarely exercise, the damage in my spine prevents me. I can swim to keep my weight and metabolism healthy and some times I try to lift too much because I am not feeling the pain. I ALWAYS regret this because my spine goes out of alignment and I suffer for weeks. I take Celebrex before trying any chriopropathic manipulations because the reduced inflammation and muscle relaxation make the alignment exercised much more effective.

- Ibuprofen (Motrin, Ibuprin)
- Diclofenac (Voltaren, Cataflam)

If your symptoms get worse or do not improve call your health care provider.
Subj: Gained 20 lbs. in 6 months
Date: 2/29/2008
I thought Celebrex was a “miracle drug” to help me with my arthritis until I made the connection to my weight gain which accelerated when I began Celebrex. I have gained 20 lbs. in 6 months. I attributed it to overeating at the holidays, but at the same time, didn’t think that I ate THAT much. Yesterday at work, another girl said that it caused her to gain 3 pounds in one week so she stopped. So I’m going to stop it (effective 2/29/08) and see what happens. Stay tuned.

Subj: No pain!
Date: 3/2/2008
Age 37. I’ve taken Celebrex for only one month and now I tell everyone I know how it has changed my life. I’ve had chronic neck and shoulder pain for over 15 years. It got so bad that I couldn’t raise my right arm over my head for the past 5 years (Frozen Shoulder). On the first week of taking 200 mg daily, I could raise my arm smoothly over my head with no pain! The best part, I have NO negative side effects. My mood is back to normal and I’m losing weight, because I can finally exercise without pain. I’m so excited to be able to throw a ball to my son and be physical with him. I can garden half the day and still I have smooth flowing limbs at night. I highly recommend it for chronic pain sufferers. I thought my pain was a life sentence until I found Celebrex.

Subj: Lesions of the rectum and vaginal area
Date: 3/3/2008
I have been on celebrex for over 5 years (or more as my memory fades me). About 3 years ago I started getting discolorations on my hands and arms as if it were bruising (i.e.: red patches but not painful although I do bruise easily). I take the celbrex for months and then I get scared and stop until I can’t stand the dis-comfort any longer. I have IBS, lesions of the rectum and vaginal area (a current biopsy is being done). I am diagnosed with fibromyalgia and arthritis. I have muscle pain always. I had lesions on my last colon test that were surgically removed “ouch!”). I just had a sonogram done of my gallbladder due to severe bloating, shortness of breath plus uncomfortable pain in my right rib area. The sonogram looked good for the gallbladder but there seems to be a problem showing in the kidney. I am scheduled for a CT scan in 3 days. Could celbrex be a part of all these problems or the source of the problem? Help! Anyone out there a mess like me? I am a 62 year old female.
Renee
AskDocWeb: Celebrex does not cause lesions but there is a possibility of increased bleeding with its use.
