Subj: Big weight gain
Date: 3/5/2008
Been taking for 2 months since January, 10 for partial shoulder replacement surgery. 200mg BID. it really worked as I only got a weeks supply when I had the surgery. When it was gone the pain really flaired. I went back on it till now. I tapered to one pill for the last four or five days and took the last one yesterday. I recently of Oxycodone use too and can say the symptoms of stopping the Celebrex are similar. Reported or not! Headache, light chills and even some nausea! I’m not too worried as I’m finally free of pain meds after 19 months of chasing pain from a bicycle accident! Oh, yeah, big weight gain too! Wonderful :[

Will Celebrex, brake your face out?

Cynthia

AskDocWeb: No it won’t.

Subj: Celebrex decreasing tolerance for alcohol?
Date: 3/22/2008
I started taking 200 mg of celebrex about 2 months ago, and have noticed that I get disoriented and dizzy from 2-3 servings of alcohol, which would never happen to me before I began taking celebrex. Have there been any reports or studies of celebrex decreasing tolerance for alcohol? Should I try just skipping a dose of celebrex any time that I am planning on drinking?

Ezra

AskDocWeb: There are no reports of Celebrex decreasing tolerance for alcohol but because of the increase risk for stomach bleeding when using alcohol with Celebrex, you should discuss this with your doctor.

Subj: Can you eat grapefruit?
Date: 4/4/2008
I am a new user of Celebrex 6 months. My question is in side effects, can you eat grapefruit? Thank you,

Thomas

AskDocWeb: Yes, there is no problem with eating grapefruit while on Celebrex. It is Lipitor and grapefruit that may cause problems.

Subj: Ringing in the ears
Date: 4/12/2008

Subj: Weight gain
Date: 4/15/2008
I also suspect that celebrex might cause weight gain. I started having celebrex last month due to an injury. I gained almost 15 pounds since then. I’m cutting calories but my weight continues going up by the day. Regarding the pain, yes celebrex is good but just masks the pain, as soon as I stop it the pain is again with me.

Subj: I am myself again!
Date: 6/2/2008
I am an RN, 59yo. Recently diagnosed with osteoarthritis. I have been in severe constant generalized pain for several months. I had become depressed, fatigued, irritable. I felt like I was walking around in a 80yo body. I’ve tried Mobic, Naprosyn, Voltaren, Ibuprofen, Extra Strength Tylenol without relief. I’ve taken Celebrex for less than a week. My partner noticed today that my face is relaxed and I’m walking ahead not behind. My pain is approx. 70% less. I too am willing to risk the side effects while I modify my diet and add exercise to lose excess weight and regain flexibility. With all that pain I didn’t have the endurance to exercise. I am myself again!!!

Subj: Celebrex no longer be effective
Date: 6/7/2008
I have used Celebrex at 200 mg a day for the past year for arthritis. The medication seems to no longer be effective. My physician has increased the meds to 400 mgs a day but it still doesn’t seem to be any help. I am in great pain. Does Celebrex just stop working?

Leslie

AskDocWeb: It is possible that your arthritis may be getting worse. We suggest you see a specialist for rheumatic conditions.

Subj: In pain everyday
Date: 6/9/2008
After 6 years of 2 to 6 advil daily for knee arthritis I tried the 200mg. celebrex my Dr. prescribed. At first I thought it helped, but now after 6 days-no pain relief. I am so tried the tramadol she prescribed but it bothered my stomach. I found the advil made me retain water but now am worried about the cellebrex and weight gain. Does it take awhile to work? I am in pain everyday – nothing seems to releive it.

Diana

AskDocWeb: The time it takes to work is measured in minutes, not days. You may want to see a specialist (rheumatologist) or consult with a pain clinic for further work up.

Subj: weight gain on Celebrex
Date: 6/17/2008
Yes there is weight gain on Celebrex. Just decided to accept it or exercise (which we should be doing I am told). I have stopped taking it and week two of coming off is as though the world “vibrates” at random times. It is very unpleasant and can/will make you dizzy.

Subj: Not working well
Date: 6/25/2008
I am on about day 26 of celebrex, the insomnia is really bad, nightime flushing of skin, hot with ac on and 2 fans! Awake every hour on the hour. Also an increase in appetite and swelling, currently take dyazide for edem only and that is not working well. Anyone else with these problems?

Subj: Post-surgical adhesions
Date: 7/1/2008
I want to know if Celebrex has ever been prescribed to prevent post-surgical adhesions. The early research was wonderful. I have had 5 surgeries and always end up with adhesions.

SRJ

AskDocWeb: Taken before and immediately after surgery, Celebrex may help prevent abdominal adhesions. Celebrex is known to inhibit both the formation of blood vessels and fibroblast activity, which are necessary for the formation of scar tissue. Research is underway to incorporate anti-inflammatory and anti-proliferation drugs into polymeric films used for preventing and treating post-surgical adhesions. New types of gels also are under development to prevent postoperative adhesions.

Subj: Ankles are swollen
Date: 7/6/2008
Is celebrex safe to take with fluid pills (novo-spiroton 25mg). I find that the ankles are quite swollen and wonder if celebrex could be the cause.

Chris

AskDocWeb: Yes, that is one of the warning signs that should be reported to your doctor. Check with your doctor as soon as possible if you experience any skin rash or itching; unexplained weight gain; bloating or swelling of ankles, feet, or hands; vomiting material that looks like coffee grounds; blood in stool or vomit; yellowing of skin or eyes; or unusual fatigue.

Subj: Celebrex and weight gain
Date: 7/8/2008
Hi, I have heard many different stories about Celebrex and weight gain. I have been on it for 6 months taking 400mg a day and I haven’t noticed any difference in my pain level. I hurt my shoulder at work. Anyways, since starting on it I have gained 45 lbs. I have done the whole watching what I eat, excercising as much as a can a 3k speed walk daily. Nothing seems to help me loose weight. It just keeps going up. Since it doesn’t seem to help I have stopped it. Now lets hope my weight goes down to normal now. My dr. was nice enough to tell me that I’m fat because I’m lazy….which I’m not lazy.

Subj: Celebrex dosage
Date: 7/13/2008
What happens if I take 2 Celebrex per day?

P.

AskDocWeb: That would depend on several things like the dosage and what was prescribed for you. During clinical trials, dosages of up to 2400mg per day for up to 10 days in 12 patients did not result in serious toxicity.

Subj: Sulfa drug?
Date: 7/19/2008
I am alergic to sulfas, can I take celabrex? Thanks,

Dan

AskDocWeb: The patient information on Celebrex says, “Do not take this medicine if you have had a severe allergic reaction to a sulfonamide antibiotic (Septra DS, Bactrim DS, Gantrisin).” Other sulfa drugs are sulfacetamide, sulfacet-R, sulfachlorpyridazine, sulfacytine, sulfadiazine, sulfamethizole, sulfamethoxazole, sulfamylon, and sulfasalazine.

Subj: Allergic reaction
Date: 7/18/2008
I had a allergic reaction to cipro, it caused my joints to become very painful. Since then I am afraid to take any medication. I was just prescribed Celebrex, is it safe for me to take Celebrex? Is cipro a sulfa drug?

Angie

AskDocWeb: No, cipro is not a sulfa drug, it (Ciprofloxacin) is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. This type of antibiotic is used to treat bacterial infections in many different parts of the body. They work by killing bacteria or preventing their growth. Other drugs in this class include;

  • Ciprofloxacin
  • Enoxacin
  • Gatifloxacin
  • Levofloxacin
  • Moxifloxacin
  • Norfloxacin
  • Ofloxacin
  • Parenteral
  • Sparfloxacin

Only your doctor can say if it is safe for you to take Celebrex.

Subj: Wonderful pain relief
Date: 7/22/2008
I’ve been taking Celebrex for about 6 days so far. The first 4 days I hardly had any relief. My doctor increased my dosage to 100mg in morning & 100mg at night. And just over night I had an immense change in my pain & stiffness. I have been reading it can cause weight gain. So far due to the wonderful pain relief, I am prepared to take the risk of continuing it, however I am curious if I started to gain weight, could I take Celery & Juniper. Celery & Juniper are used as a diuretic. Would these affect or interact with Celebrex?

Curious

AskDocWeb: We didn’t find any interactions listed but that does not mean it would be appropriate for you. Talk to your doctor before following any medical regimen to see if it is safe and effective for you.

Subj: Long-term use of Celebrex
Date: 7/23/2008
I am 70 and have end stage arthritis in one of my ankles, my knees are candidates for replacement not to mention the arthritis that is in the rest of my body, however I workout daily for an hour on an elliptical machine and do other exercises. I have taken celebrex for many years and I have noticed that my feet are becoming numb and my feet are swelling also I have difficulty sleeping. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Robert

AskDocWeb: Swelling of the ankles, feet, or hands is a warning sign and should be reported to your doctor as soon as possible.

Subj: Celebrex and depression
Date: 7/24/2008
Celebrex made me depressed. I am taking Lamictal and Effexor XR for my bipolar 1 mood swings and depression successfully. After I started on the Celebrex, I got depressed within one week. I had to stop Celebrex because I cannot stop my bipolar meds. I feel better mentally, but am hurting physically again. I guess I can try another drug, but in the mean time I am taking ibuprophen.

Sandra

Subj: Celebrex for Achilles tendonitis
Date: 7/24/2008
I started 200mg. Celebrex daily for Achilles tendonitis, and the relief from pain was just short of a miracle within 2 days. I experienced no side effects, but from everyone else’s experiences, I am planning to quit soon.

Subj: Celebrex warning
Date: 8/7/2008
Anyone taking Celebrex had better watch it closely. I was taking 200mg. daily for about a year. After a while I told my doctor that I was feeling tired and he paid no attention. Finally my body started retaining fluid. My ankles got so tight they felt like over stretched elastic. I got so weak and disorientated I couldn’t walk or know what I was doing. When they did a 24 hour urine check they found my protein count to be 9025 and it should only to have been 150. I was only about 2 weeks or less before my kidneys would have shut down. When they took me off that they put me on about 4 medications to cure that problem and I ran into more severe problems and almost lost my life once again. They should outlaw that Celebrex or the doctors should pay more attention to what the patient is telling them. I should have sued the company that made celebrex and the doctor who prescibed it.
