Subj: Should this be working by now?
Date: 8/15/2008
I’m 28 yr old female and was diagnosed with stage 3 osteoarthritis and patelleofemoral arthritis in both knees. I’ve had 4 knee surgeries- and was just put on 200mg celebrex 2xs a day- I’ve been on it for 15 days now – and I’ve yet to have ANY noticable Pain relief…all I have experienced is horribly loose stools and gas pains… should this be working by now??? And I’m also worried about weight gain now that I see most people on this website have experienced that. Any help is appreciated! Thanks in advance.

JTaya

AskDocWeb: Celebrex starts working within an hour of the first dose but it is possible that your dosage may need to be adjusted.

Subj: Rash
Date: 8/17/2008
Can celebrex cause a rash?

Rosalynne

AskDocWeb: Yes but if you develop a rash or hives, tell your doctor immediately.

Subj: Help for pain
Date: 8/24/2008
I’ve been taking Celebrex now for 3 wks 200MG, I have knee pain from arthritis and taking just NSID’s werent helping that much so I went to an Orthopedic Dr and he prescribed Celebrex. But it doesnt help my back pain or a headache, it only helps my knee pain. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Mary-Ellen

AskDocWeb: When you have multiple sources of pain like you have, a pain clinic may be your best source of help. They may be able to teach you new ways to cope.

Subj: Methotrexate and Celebrex
Date: 8/27/2008
I take Methotrexate and Celebrex. I have been on this combo for 8/9 years. Constantly struggling with my weight. I am now 28 and thinking of having a family. Must I stop both tablets? Will my mobility shut down? I depend on these meds? Has anyone been in a similar position?

Subj: Decreases tolerance for alcohol
Date: 8/29/2008
I am taking Celebrex as well as depression medication (Wellbutryn, Zoloft, Lithium, Lamictil). Understanding that having alcohol is not good with these drugs and Celebrex, I still like to have a drink or glass of wine occasionally. I have noticed that when I do drink a glass or two of wine or a drink or two, I get the effects x10! Is that normal? I never had this problem before. I’ve been taking the Celebrex for about a month now and this started about one week ago. Any suggestions are helpful. Thank you.

Rita

AskDocWeb: There have been a few reports that Celebrex decreases tolerance for alcohol or reduces your personal limit. If you drink alcohol on a daily basis, do not take this medicine without first discussing it with your doctor. Alcohol use combined with this medicine may increase your risk for stomach bleeding.

Subj: Can’t be without it!
Date: 8/31/2008
I have been taking Celebrex for 7 years – ever since my ovarian cancer. I just tried going off it for the last 10 days. Nothing but pain! Went back on yesterday and in 24 hours I can close my hands and have no more joint pain. Can’t be without it!

Subj: Severe arthritis
Date: 9/2/2008
I have been taking 200 mg of celebrex for appr 6 years. My doctor increased it to 400 a day as I am suffering from severe arthritis and other inflamatory conditions. I have some blocked arteries in my heart and take cardizam… cardiology prefers I not take celebrex atho my GP tells me my lack of exercise due to my arthritis is more dangerous than the medication. Celebrex works for me as I have tried to go without over the years without success. Celebrex allows me to hike and do my other activities at 61 I am now wondering if I am doing right. My friends tell me to slow down and do without the drug. Any suggestions?

Jerri

AskDocWeb: When you have two doctors giving conflicting advice like that, we suggest you have one of them call the other to discuss the issue and work out a treatment plan. There is no need for you to be caught in the middle.

Subj: Forgetfulness and swollen lip
Date: 9/5/2008
I have been taking 400mg of Celebrex for the past year and half for arthritis. Don’t know if it is helping but don’t have the aches I used to have. My doctor was concerned about the dosage and has cut me back to 200mg, one pill a day. I have now having bad bouts of forgetfulness and my upper lip is swollen. Could this be a side effect of withdrawing from the medication? Thanks in advance for responding.

Barbara

AskDocWeb: Memory problems with Celebrex haven’t been noted but swelling of the lips should be reported to your doctor immediately.

Subj: Long-term side effects?
Date: 9/5/2008
My mother has taken Celebrex for four years and hasn’t noticed any of the most common side effects that I read about. She has had lots of pain in her muscles and has seen doc after doc and she was wanting me too look into if there ever has been any problems or side effects with patients that have taken celebrex for a long time and muscle problems? Thanks for your help.

Amber

AskDocWeb: Too little is known about the long-term use of all pain medication. That is part of the purpose of this website, to make these long-term effects known. If she hasn’t already visited one, a pain clinic might be able to help.

Subj: Itchy rash
Date: 9/7/2008
I have been taking celebrex daily for about 3 months. Over the last 3 weeks I have developed an itchy rash on both knees, one elbow and most recently on one calf. I stopped taking celebrex 4 days ago because a doctor said the rash was either a reaction to the drug or the beginning of psoriasis. Opinion?

Jay

AskDocWeb: A rash is definitely one of the signs of an allergic reaction, especially since it has appeared on several places on the body.

Subj: Celebrex and itching
Date: 9/8/2008
My Dr prescribed celebrex for muscle and nerve pain in my back caused by DDD and siatica. When I stared taking the celebrex everything was fine. Along with a muscle relaxer (flexril) my pain was under control. A few days after starting celebrex I started to itch but only on certin parts of my body i.e.: around my waist and stomach, on the upper part of my arms and the upper part of my leg. I would itch and itch BUT NO RASH! My Question is: Can I take Benadryl with the celebrex? I know its not the flexril because I’ve been on that before and had no side effects I havent changed any of my shampoos, body washes, deorants or laundry detergent. I want to keep taking the celebrex because I’m having alot of pain relief, but I dont want the side effects to get worse.

Donna

AskDocWeb: While there is no counterindication for using Benadryl with Celebrex the itching should be discussed with your doctor as this may indicate a problem.

Subj: Itchy rash
Date: 9/8/2008
I have read through all the reports. After taking a single dose of Celebrex two days ago after undergoing an hysterectomy, I had a severe panic attack for the first time in my life. I had palpitations, struggled to breathe and had a sense of impending doom. After the panic attack I experienced tremors and felt jittery. At the time I did not think that it might be due to the Celebrex and continued using it. I have now developed an itchy rash on my “sensitive” bits down below and even in my anus and I’m still feeling jittery. I’ve stopped using the Celebrex. Are these symptoms as a result of Celebrex?

Ansie

AskDocWeb: A skin rash or itching should be reported to your doctor as soon as possible as this may indicate an adverse reaction. That jittery feeling is not listed as a side effect of Celebrex, nor are panic attacks.

Subj: Celebrex and aggressive behavior
Date: 9/11/2008
I have been on celebrex for 3 months for sacroilitis and have noticed that my behavior has become more aggressive. I have had a hard time controlling my temper. I am usually a calm person and I am concerned about the change in my mental state. Just wondering if anyone else has experieced this side effect also. Thanks,

John

Subj: Reaction after surgery
Date: 9/11/2008
I just had a cyst removed from my foot and before they did it, I was given 2 white capsules and told it was celebrex to decrease inflamation and swelling. Aside from the ancef they gave me IV and the lidocaine and marcaine they gave for my ankle block, I received no other drugs. I did fine through the surgery, chatting with the OR staff but when I got up from the table I began to feel very dizzy. This got increasingly worse until I began to vomit. They sent me home shortly after and every time I moved, I vomited. I went to bed and laid very still until about 4 hours after I took the dose, it started to subside and I was able to start eating. I think it was from the celebrex, should I be cautious about taking it ever again? Have you heard of this type of reaction? I am very sensitive to medication and refused any other drugs for my surgery. Was the dose too high? I am 62 and weigh 128 lbs.

Judy

AskDocWeb: Nausea is one of the possible side effects of Celebrex and the dosage doesn’t have to be too high to experience that. On the other hand your reaction may also have been a post operative one having nothing to do with Celebrex.

Subj: Awful abdominal side effects?
Date: 9/11/2008
Problem I have with taking it is the awful gas, abdominal cramps, diarr…have been taking gas pills, immodium ad, even eating yogurt to no avail..how long does it take to get rid of the awful abdominal side effects?

Pat

AskDocWeb: If they are awful or last more than a few days, then report them to your doctor.

Subj: Swelling
Date: 9/12/2008
I’ve was put on Celebrex a couple weeks ago for extreme lower back pain (arthitis related) and within ten days my hands started to develop blisters which I took to be poison oak – I’ve gotten it from our dogs before but was never susceptable and it would clear up in a couple days. It’s been fours days now and my left eyelid is swollen, “blisters” on multiple fingers and spreading to my arms and legs. Also, the left portion of my temple is swelling and red looking. As this was highly unusual for me to ‘break out’ like this, I did some research to find that skin rashes are a definate side effect of Celebrex. I don’t take much in the way of medicines (synthroid only) and at 6’4″ (240lbs) I’ve always been able to stay pretty active – the back pain has progressed over the years so I thought maybe this would help. I have noticed some increased flexibility in my joints, etc. but the back pain isn’t really subsiding.

Shane

AskDocWeb: If you experience difficulty breathing; tightness of chest; swelling of eyelids, face, or lips; or if you develop a rash or hives, tell your doctor immediately.

Subj: When do these side effects go away?
Date: 9/26/2008
I was only on Celebrex for 4 days and I only took it at night. Now I’m four days off, and I’ve been to an ER and a doctor for chest pain that I mistook for a heart attack/anxiety attack. When do these side effects go away?

John

AskDocWeb: They should go away within a week or so, if not then see your doctor.
