Subj: Could not handle the pain
Date: 2/11/2009
I have been on Celebrex for a couple of years now. 200 mg once a day. The Dr. took me off of it for a short time and I could not handle the pain in my shoulders which seemed to only be a problem when I tried to sleep. I get regular blood draws to keep track of possible side effects. I cannot function without it.

Subj: Significant weight gain
Date: 2/12/2009
I have experienced a significant weight gain from taking Celebrex. The added 20lbs that I am now carrying around is counterproductive to the treatment of osteoarthritis in my knees and other joints. What other medication can I use that will reduce my pain as effectively as Celebrex yet will allow me to lose the extra weight?

Jamie

AskDocWeb: We suggest you leave the choice up to your doctor as to what might work best for you. There are too many alternatives to list them all here but a few of the possibilities may be Tramadol (Generic Ultram), Butalbital (Generic Fioricet), Ultracet (Analgesic Combo), Carisoprodol (Generic Soma and Watson Brand), and Cyclobenzaprine (Generic Flexeril).

Subj: I have put on over 5 kg
Date: 2/20/2009
I am a bit of a health nut. I have multiple sclerosis but I work out on the treadmill every day and watch every piece of food that goes into my mouth. Since I have been on clebrex for a work related injury I have put on over 5 kg (in 6 weeks). I am being told to lose the weight as it affects my health but how? The only thing that has changed in my habits is celebrex.

Elaine

AskDocWeb: There are so many reports of significant weight gain you may want to talk to your doctor about an alternative to Celebrex.

Subj: Sore throat
Date: 2/20/2009
Celebrex–I am on it for a week and have a sore throat, only on one side, and feel like there’s a cotton ball in my throat and keep swallowing. I have decided to stop it. I dont like the feeling in my throat.

Joan

AskDocWeb: Even though you have decided to stop using Celebrex, the side effects need to be reported to your doctor for future reference.

Subj: Scary side effects?
Date: 3/1/2009
I have been taking Celebrex 200 mg twice a day for about 3 years. About a year ago, due to possible scary side effects I read about, dropped dosage to 1 200 mg daily & had no problems until now. Gastrointestinal problems began so I stopped Celebrex for a week to see if it would help. Still having some stomach problems (nausea) but with bad headaches (similar to a motion sickness headache). Now afraid I should not have stopped cold turkey.

Subj: Vitamins
Date: 3/21/2009
I have taken Celebrex 200 mg for ten years. I am 83. I am starting a series of vitamins designed especially for aging people. I was surprised to hear Celebrex can hinder the good coming from many vitamins. I am wondering if I can stop Celebrex cold turkey or must I come off gradually. As I have aged, I have added 2,000 mg. per day of tylenol. Was happy to find this website. Will appreciate hearing from you. Not quite a year ago I had cortesone shots on both sides of my spine and two weeks later had a shot in my Sciatic nerve. This procedure has worked very well for me.

AskDocWeb: Please do not stop taking any prescription drug without first talking to your doctor. It is likely that you will need to come up with an alternative.

Subj: Response to the question about depression
Date: 3/23/2009
I have been taking Celebrex for 1 1/2 years for joint and muscle pain due to an auto immune thyroid disease. In response to the question about depression, after being on the drug for about 6 months, I was finding myself to be very agitated. My husband pointed out to me that my personality was different since taking the drug. I quit taking it daily(I was taking 200mg. 2x daily), and now only take it when I have flareups. My personality has returned to normal. I was also very tired during the day while taking it regularly. Has anyone else experienced personality changes while on this drug?

Subj: Minor itching and weight gain
Date: 3/26/2009
I’ve been on Celebrex for about 6 months but plan to go off when it runs out (in about 2 weeks) because it does not stop the progression of the disease I have(psoriatic arthritis). A person in these reviews asked about itching… and yes, I have had minor itching “down there” since I’ve been on it. I think it is because of the Celebrex… and I’ve also gained about 10 pounds that I had no idea could be a side effect of Celebrex, but so many are mentioning it. Like I said, I plan to be off as soon as it runs out and I read that SAM-e is as effective as Celebrex, with no side effects so I will be testing that out. Only problem is that it is expensive. Does any one know of a good source that is reputible for SAM’e, and has anyone else tried this natural remedy? My pain is in the leg… above the knee mostly…

Subj: Narcotic?
Date: 3/28/2009
Is celebrex considered a narcotic?

Brenda

AskDocWeb: No.

Subj: Alcohol?
Date: 4/2/2009
I am wondering what the wash out period is. How long after stopping the use of celebrex would it be alright to have alcohol?

B B

AskDocWeb: The effective half-life of Celebrex is 11 hours so it can take a couple of days to completely clear your system. As long as there are no digestive problems, moderate use of alcohol should be okay.

Subj: Celebrex withdrawal
Date: 4/9/2009
I was on 200mg twice a day for two weeks it, it was ok for a while and I stopped 3 days short because my back pain was gone. Drug worked great and gave my back time to heal, but when I stopped taking it I was shocked at the withdrawal. I had cold and hot sweats, insomnia, stomach pain, constipation, and real fatigue. I am happy my back is better but since it is a pain drug I think some of the withdrawal symptoms aside from pain returning should be investigated.

Kurt

Subj: How long?
Date: 4/11/2009
How long does celebrex remain in your system once you have stopped taking it?

R.

AskDocWeb: The effective half-life of Celebrex is 11 hours so it may take a couple of days to completely clear your system.

Subj: Hard to medicate
Date: 4/11/2009
I was given celebrex for severe tendonitis. I am hard to medicate, have a high intolerance of most pain meds. I took celebrex for 5 days and had to quit. Had dizziness, blurred vision, extreme loud ringing in my ears, shaking, then adomidable cramps, severe diarraha and vomiting. This was after the first few days when I was severely constipated and had no apetite. I am sure this medication is great for some, but if you are hard to medicate as I am be advised.

Subj: My ears began to hum
Date: 4/15/2009
I have been on Celebrex for only a month – for arthritis pain in my thumb. Suddenly at work my ears began to hum in and out as if with my heartbeat. It made it very hard to concentrate. It has come and gone for two days now. Thanks to this website, I have discovered that it’s very possible this could be caused by the Celebrex. I will definitely go off the meds and see if the humming goes away. I’d rather have the pain.

Joey

Subj: Not totally impressed
Date: 4/15/2009
Not that I’m totally impressed, but this is more than I expected for when I stumbled upon a link on Delicious telling that the info is awesome. Thanks.

How

AskDocWeb: Thank you, all we ask is that if you find it helpful then share it with others.

Subj: ACE inhibitor?
Date: 4/25/2009
Does celebrex contain an ace inhibitor?

Joann

AskDocWeb: No, ace inhibitors are a different class of drugs. When ACE inhibitors and Celebrex are taken together, the effectiveness of the ACE inhibitor may be reduced. As a result, your healthcare provider may choose to adjust your dose of the ACE inhibitor as necessary or may recommend an alternative for the Celebrex.

Subj: Celebrex
Date: 4/28/2009
I have been taking celebrex ( 200mg/once a day) for about 6 weeks and have experienced weight gain around my belt line. As I am not in a great deal of pain, I intend to experiment and cut the dose back to every other day. I always watch my diet and continue to exercise.

Subj: Violently sick
Date: 5/4/2009
I took celebrex for 2 weeks for pain in my wrist and elbow. It didn’t seemed to work at all, the pain was still there. I took my last one yesterday and saw my doctor today. As it seemed not to work, he told be to take some advil instead, which I haven’t taken yet. About 6 hours after the dose of celebrex I should have taken today, I have been violently sick, I have a bad headache (started 2-3 hours ago) and my stomach hurts. Can this be related to stopping the medication? Also, I started losing blood as though my period where starting, but I take the pill and am still 5 days away from the real start (never happened before)…

Elo

AskDocWeb: Any pain medication can have withdrawal affects but it sounds like you may have something else. Please discuss this with your health care provider.

Subj: Noticed increased excitability
Date: 5/11/2009
I’ve just gone back on Celebrex (100mg) and am taking it once a day; it has helped my joint pain. At first, I noticed increased excitability, although I’d never had that when I took it for a couple of years, several years ago. That has diminished, now, but it felt very much like an anti-depressant.

Gabrielle

Subj: Benefits are amazing
Date: 5/15/2009
I have used celebrex off and on several times over the years always for short periods for pain relief. Most recently I had nerve damage drop foot and sciatic pain due to an accident. At first I was perscribed melocicam which made me irritable, severe headaches and instant weight gain (10lbs with in 2 weeks). I switched to celebrex and have no issues other than a very occasional irregular heart beat. I have a slight irregular beat which is aggravated when I take antihistamines so I have experienced this before. The benefits are amazing for me – no side effects or weight gain. This drug is not for everyone. I have had adverse effects from vioxx as well, and naproxin. This anti infalammatory is the only one that seems to suit with my body.

Subj: Pain relief for thumb joint?
Date: 5/18/2009
I gained 4.5 pounds in the first six days! I have been walking 3 miles daily and losing weight daily up until this time. Would the combination of 1500 mg Glucosamine plus 1500 mg Chondroitin Sulfate provide pain relief for my thumb joint?

K in Oregon

AskDocWeb: That depends on the cause of the pain in your thumb joint. The formula that we use has half of that amount and it still produces a good deal of pain relief in the joints. However, there are a few health concerns with using glucosamine.

Subj: Drink a few beers?
Date: 5/22/2009
Can you drink a few beers safely, and still take 200mg of celebrex daily if you have no history of problems?

Jane

AskDocWeb: If you drink alcohol on a daily basis, do not take Celebrex without first discussing it with your doctor. The concern here is that the use of alcohol while on Celebrex may increase your risk for stomach bleeding.
