Subj: Foot problems

I have arthritis and I only have one kidney. Over the past 5 years I have developed feet problem due to my job. I underwent surgery about 8 mos. ago for Tarsal Tunnel. I also have spurs, plantars fascitis, excruciating pain in the ball of my foot leading down into my toes and very little padding on the bottom of my feet. My doctor wanted to prescribe celebrex for the inflammation, but only wanted me taking it temporarily due to my only having one kidney. Because drugs are filtered through your liver and kidney, your kidney retains some of what goes through it. It is not a good thing to take any anti-inflammatory drug for a long period of time, especially if you only have one kidney. I did get relief while on the drug, but also experienced weight gain and didn’t know what it was until I read your articles. Hope this helps someone. I am currently not pain free and would like any ideas on how to get there.

AskDocWeb:You might visit a podiatrist to have custom-made inserts for your shoes (not the ones over the counter). The custom inserts are about $200.00 (US) but well worth it and would give you some relief.

Subj: Gained 10 pounds

I’ve been taking Celebrex for a few years–heavy doses early on, and reduced gradually to twice a week. In that same period, I’ve gained 10 pounds I can not lose. This, despite an intense spinning class weekly, working out three times a week, doing power yoga and following a food program designed by my trainer at the gym, who has published a book on healthy eating. I haven’t been able to lose the weight, so I’ve decided to go off Celebrex and see what happens. I’d rather live with some pain than gain more weight at 50 and worry about the impact on my health.

Subj: Gained 10 pounds

I began taking celebrex for shoulder pain and after surgery on same. In 6 weeks I have gained 10 pounds. I have never been this heavy in my life. I notice this with others on the product, but no one has said if the weight drops off afterwards. I have been off the drug for 2 days–back on aspirin. Even the PDR insert says you can gain weight on it. After reading all the other side effects, I will never take it again.

Subj: Weight gain and swelling

I have arthritis and had a hip replacement six years ago. About three months ago I was put on Celebrex for arthritis and have noticed weight gain and swelling in ankles especially my left ankle. Is this common with the drug celebrex??? Thank you,

AskDocWeb: Both weight gain and swelling in ankles are problems that you should tell your doctor about as soon as possible. Your dosage may need adjusting or you may not be able to take Celebrex.

Subj: Weight gain with Celebrex

I have read some of the weight gain comments for celebrex and I am one of them. I get relief but I can feel weight gain. Tell me why celebrex could cause weight gain. I have been on it for a full month at 200mg and have noticed more weight gain even though I exercise, watch my nutrition etc. Thanks,

AskDocWeb: You can but, if you drink alcohol on a daily basis, do not take this medicine without first discussing it with your doctor. Alcohol use combined with Celebrex may increase your risk for stomach bleeding.

Subj: Celebrex withdrawal?

I have taken celebrex for 2-plus years. I stopped taking it 2-weeks ago due to my insurance company and the cost. It has now been 3-weeks without the pill in my system, which is 400 ml a day. Bam I am in pain, sluggish, wore down, joints hurt worse then ever, thought I had the flue bug but figured it out. Call the Dr and get script filled again today I took my first for 3-weeks and 4- hours later I am feeling the jones leave. Please respond, could this be true that the pill called celebrex could give you the withdraw feeling. Thanks for any reply that has had this happen. Need to know if it is the pill or what.

AskDocWeb: Most people who have been on Celebrex for a while say Yikes when they try going without it. That is not a withdrawal symptom but rather the real pain that is no longer being covered up or dulled by the Celebrex.

I gained 30 lbs. and still have it. I had stomach pain, gastritis, and tias (transient ischemic attachs)(now called brain attacks). I would not recommend it until further info is available. Zoloft does better for my pain. That drug may be questionable, also.

I have extensive din the past and suffered diverticular disease. I have taken celebrex on two occasions and on both occasions I have suffered a severe bleeding attack. I dare not take celebrex despite the fact that I got relief from arthritis.

My father has taken Celebrex for about a year. He is 84. He has been suffering from aches and pains in his joints, arms and legs. Could this be a side effect as he has been to see a heart specialist and has been to his to his family dr. and can not find anything wrong with him but he has no strength in his limbs.

AskDocWeb: The celebrex should be helpful for the aches and pains. They are not likely to be side effects. Have you considered that the weakness in the limbs may just be from old age? Or is this a sudden loss of strength? The amount of regular exercise he gets will also influence this.

Subj: Taking Celebrex with blood thinners

I presently take Celebrex for arthritis, 200 milligrams. I also take blood thinners and other medication for irregular heart beat. I have not talked to my doctor yet, but do you see a problem?

AskDocWeb: You should monitor your blood and liver function with chronic use. We caution its use with any hypertension or heart failure medications. Fluid retention and swelling have been reported. Your doctor may limit you to only l00mg of Celebrex.

Subj: Bad reaction to Celebrex

Within two days of commencing a course of Celebrex due to a soft tissue injury both my feet had swollen to a point where it seemed the skin surely had to rupture to relieve the pressure. Upon stopping the drug the swelling is subsiding v – e – r – y slowly.

AskDocWeb: Unfortunately, this does happen in a few cases. Swelling feet is one of the side effects that requires immediate medical attention.

Subj: Stomach pains

I was put on a once a day dose of celebrex three days ago. Almost 24 hours after my first dose I started having stomach pains. I didn’t think of it being the Celebrex until after my third dose today. I am still having severe stomach pains. I won’t be taking it again until I talk to my doctor. He gave it to me to take for 9 days for inflammation in some muscles in my chest wall. Any one else have stomach pain that quickly on Celebrex?

I started taking celebrex for my bad knees. I started having muscle pain in my thighs and was gaining weight like crazy and could not figure out why until I found this web page. I stopped taking it and my weight gain stopped but the muscle pain still comes and goes.

I don’t find celebrex to work as well for my back pain as the vioxx. Vioxx was WONDERFUL. But I am curious, do you have to have this medicine build up in your system to get full effect? I say that heading for this website, but don’t see the answer to it. Thanks,

Subj: Couldn’t believe it

My neurologist increased my dosage of Celebrex to 200mg 2 x day for lower back and SI joint pain. I thought I could drop back to 1 x day, but couldn’t believe how bad the pain became after only 2 days of taking it 1 x day.

I had taken Celebrex for two years for degenerative arthritis of back and for knee pain(200mg) and got pretty good relief. I have stopped taking it now due to the bad publicity. My pains are back. I need something so Dr. prescribed Lodine, this has not helped. Any suggestions?

AskDocWeb See a pain specialist, they should be listed in your yellow pages, or find out the name of one from your doctor. Pain specialists deal with these problems every day. They are a good choice to come up with something that will work for you on a long term basis.

I have been taking Celebrex for 4 months and I am experiencing tooth discoloration and hair loss. Could this be a side effect of the celebrex?

AskDocWeb Tooth discoloration is not a known side effect of Celebrex but hair loss is listed among the less common side effects.
