Subj: I choose the celebrex
Date: 9/16/2009
I’ve been using celebrex for years and not gained weight. I have a complicated medical history traumatic accident with back/pelvis involvement, lupus/r.a. and breast cancer. I’m on a list of medications and have in the past tried to stop taking the celebrex to see if I could try to cut down on all the meds. It helps me quite a bit. I’ll put it this way, if I had to choose only on medication out of the seven + I now take without a doubt I choose the celebrex. Just remember to take it with food, it can be hard on the stomach.

Subj: Weight gain
Date: 9/18/2009
I’ve been just put on celebrex for degenerative joint disease in my feet. 1 dose and I feel much better. However in reading your feedback on the drug, I’m finding weight gain! I’m already attempting to loose 30 lbs. I can’t afford the added problem. Do all the nsaids cause weight gain?

Jan

AskDocWeb: Weight gain with NSAIDs does not appear to be common but as you can see by the feedback it does occur. If you do experience weight gain it is important to talk with your healthcare provider. Unexplained rapid weight gain may be a sign of congestive heart failure in some people. All NSAIDS may cause congestive heart failure.

Subj: Appetite suppressant?
Date: 9/24/2009
I’ve been taking Celebrex for just 3 days for joint pain. What a relief. I’ve read other postings about weight gain, but was wondering if it can act as appetite supressant? Since starting the dosage I haven’t felt like eating a thing! Could the lack of appetite be connected to the Celebrex? I’m not on any other medications. Thanks.

Jessica

AskDocWeb: No changes in appetite are listed in the side effects for Celebrex, neither an increase nor a decrease. On the other hand, a common complaint among patients being treated for pain is that they lose their appetite.

Subj: Hypermobility syndrome
Date: 10/2/2009
I was on Celebrex and Cymbalta for hypermobility syndrome(joint pain) Two Drs told me I should go off. So, I went off. 3 days after I went off I developed an acute sore throat with a sore in the back of my throat. It’s not strep. I have already lost 5 pounds since going off the drugs. I’m on Erythromycin because the doctor can’t tell if it’s a virus or what? I think it’s the celebrex discontinuance. I’m a little dizzy from going off the Cymbalta. I started 4000 units of fish oil about 2 months ago. I haven’t had any night hand pain since discontinuing celebrex nor Cymbalta. If fish oil is it then I’m happy to be off the drugs…

Subj: Hard to lose weight
Date: 10/7/2009
Celebrex, I am on 200mg a day and have been for some years now. I am 52 and exercise most days, but find it hard to lose weight. But having read this page about other peoples problems with weight gain. I think I will stop celebrex for a little while and see if this makes a difference. My question is, can you stop using this drug without and dangers?

Mr

AskDocWeb: Most of the people who stop taking Celebrex while they still need it say, “Yikes, the pain!” They don’t realize how well is working until they stop taking it. Please talk to your doctor about an appropriate alternative before discontinuing.

Subj: Alternatives?
Date: 10/9/2009
Had a severe reaction to Celebrax, had to be in the hospital. Is there another pain reliever I can take beside tylenol, I’m having severe shoulder pain? Thanks,

Candace

AskDocWeb: When it comes to choosing an alternative to Celebrex, we suggest you leave the choice up to your doctor as to what might work best for you. Depending on your condition, a few of the possibilities might be Tramadol (Generic Ultram), Butalbital (Generic Fioricet), Ultracet (Analgesic Combo), Carisoprodol (Generic Soma and Watson Brand), and Cyclobenzaprine (Generic Flexeril). There are too many alternatives to list them all here.

Subj: I feel worse
Date: 10/17/2009
I just started taking celebrex and I think I feel worse. Should I stop?

Linda

AskDocWeb: You should not stop taking Celebrex without first consulting with your doctor. There may be an alternative that could work better for you.

Subj: Arthrotec Vs Celebrex
Date: 10/29/2009
Please compare “Arthrotec” to “Celebrex.” Could it be a better choice, w/less bad side effect of Celebrex? Thanks.

Nancy

AskDocWeb: Arthrotec may indeed be a better choice for some patients. Here is a side by side comparison of of the long-term side effects (1 + years use). These are in arranged in order with the most frequently reported at to top of the list.

ArthrotecCelebrex
 Hypoaesthesia Myocardial infarction
 Cerebrovascular accident  Cerebrovascular accident
 Swelling Depression
 Hyperlipidaemia Hypertension
 Chest pain Chest pain
 Dehydration Cardiac failure congestive
 Hypokalaemia Cardiac disorder
 Anaemia Diabetes mellitus
 Myocardial infarction Nausea
Pain in jaw Acute myocardial infarction

Hypoaesthesia is when the skin loses some of its sensitivity to pain or touch. The loss of sensitivity seems minor when compared to a myocardial infarction (heart attack).

Subj: Diarrhea after stopping Celebrex?
Date: 11/1/2009
I have been taking celebrex for 15 months for pain associated with scoliosis. Before taking celebrex I was plagued with constipation all they time so I started taking Miralax. It worked fine but with bouts of occasional diarrhea. Once I started taking celebrex with the miralax I was regular for the first time in my life. It was great for over a year. I have discontinued use of celebrex because my doctor doesn’t think I should be on it for long periods of time. Three days after discontinuing the celebrex I started having diarrhea with severe stomach cramps. I stopped taking the miralax because it wasnt needed. It has been 2 weeks since discontinuing celebrex and miralax and I am still having bouts of diarrhea and sever cramps. Is this a side effect of going off the medication? Was the celebrex somehow helping to control my irritable bowel? I thought diarrhea was a side effect of taking the meds not discontinuing them.

Cathy

AskDocWeb: While it is true that diarrhea is one of the possible of side effects of taking Celebrex (in 4% to 11% of users), we’ve seen no mention in the Clinical studies of diarrhea continuing after Celebrex is discontinued.

Subj: Hooray for Celebrex!
Date: 11/4/2009
I was diagnosed with osteo arthritis several years ago. I had such pain in my hands and fingers. Also, I have lots of problems with my lower back. At times my husband had to help me out of bed, and he has had to help me bathe myself. It was awful. I have been taking Celebrex for 2 years now, and it has been a lifesaver for me. I still have some pain but not nearly as much as before. My fingers don’t swell and hurt like they use to. Hooray for Celebrex!

Subj: Discontinue taking the Celebrex?
Date: 11/5/2009
I have been taking 200mg of Celebrex daily for the past 5 years for lower back pain associated with Degenerative Disc Disease and herniated discs. In the past 18 months, I have lost close to 70 pounds through changing my diet and exercise and would now like to discontinue taking the Celebrex. I believe that with the weight off the pressure and pain in my back should be lessened. Is there any reason why I should not stop taking Celebrex cold turkey? Would it be better to only take it every other day for a bit to wean myself off? I would appreciate any advice you can give. Thanks,

Allison

AskDocWeb: Your reasoning sounds good but please do not stop taking any prescription drug without first talking to your doctor.

Subj: Better mood and energy?
Date: 11/8/2009
I take Celebrex when my other DMARDS don’t give me enough pain relief but notice that my mood and energy is better when taking Celebrex. Perhaps this is just because I have less pain but wondered if anyone else experienced this?

Subj: Celbrex
