Subj: Hope for the best
I’ve used Celebrex for nearly 6 years to alleviate pain from an old ankle fracture. Before Celebrex, I used Bextra then Vioxx. Celebrex makes the difference between being able to walk, and feeling like I’m crippled. I have chronic high blood pressure, and that and the cost of Celebrex made me stop using it last week. I’m back to feeling crippled when I walk. I’ve seen nothing in this discussion that makes me nervous about going back on Celebrex, although it’s obvious now that Celebrex is masking my ankle pain quite a lot. I hate the thought of having my ankle totally immobilized, and it’s been fused already. So for now, I’ll start up my Celebrex again, and hope for the best.
Subj: Get a fix on my pain
Whats up Doc? I have been taking 200mg a day of Celebrex for a year. I want to quit taking it for a couple of months to get a fix on my pain, and how much Celebrex is reducing the pain. Do I need to wean off of it?
AskDocWeb: It will not take more than a day or so to find out how much pain Celebrex is blocking. We found nothing to indicate that weaning might be necessary but you should discuss this with your doctor before stopping. You might want to keep some on hand in case you decide to start taking them again.
Subj: Abnormally high blood sugar
I’m taking 1600 mlgs. Acyclovir for shingles in eye. The shingles came back (only in my eye) after the first outbreak 6 months. I cant afford to lose any more hair. Will it grow back? Also, my blood sugar readings are abnormally high. Does acyclovir cause this or is it the prednisone drops I’ve been taking for 8 weeks?
AskDocWeb: High blood sugar is listed as a possible side effect of both drugs.
Subj: Is Celebrex addictive?
I would like to know if this is addictive. (celebrex)
AskDocWeb: No, Celebrex is not addictive.
Subj: Constant pain
I was using it for degenerative disk desease it worked great for the frist three days, know I am in contsant pain even when I take the drug. Dont do it! Dont take the drug!
Subj: Positive results from Celebrex
I have a severly arthritic right hip and was ready to have a total hip replacement. I have been taking Celebrex for about a month and have had about a 95% relief. I could hardly walk before and I am still a fairly young woman. It has been like a miracle. I wonder how long I can safely take it and if others have had such a positive result? Thanks.
AskDocWeb: Many patients take NSAIDs for years without having any problems. As for the results, readers are encouraged to share their experience here.
Subj: Worried about stomach bleeding
I just started taking celebrex a couple of weeks ago for bursitis in my hip. It help with the pain, but I am wondering will it correct the problem. I notice some weight gain, and cut back on my sodium intake and lost a couple of pounds. I am just worried about the stomach bleeding.
AskDocWeb: The use of Celebrex is just one of the possible treatment options for bursitis. Other treatment options may include:
- Cortisone injection
- Resting the affected area
- Applying ice
- Applying heat
- Protecting the area from trauma
- Stopping the activity causing pain
- Specific exercises
- Physical therapy
It is important to be aware that the use of alcohol while taking Celebrex can increase the risk of stomach bleeding. Patients taking aspirin and the elderly are at increased risk for stomach bleeding and ulcers.
Subj: Better living through chemistry!
I am reading mostly negative comments regarding Celebrex. I have work-related Osteoarthritius and had tried Celebrex once before, two years ago. I am 54. I too had the usual side effects, weight gain, gastric distress. But recently I found the pain of the Osteo was so severe that I could no longer exercise or work without feeling debilitated the next day. So. back to the Celebrex for another try. This time, I took a Pepto tablet and an over the counter protonic prior to taking the Celebrex. This has worked beautifully for me. Also, I add lemon juice to my protein drink in the morning to keep fluid retention under control. The result, I am able to return to an exercise routine, and with Weight watchers and lemon juice, I do not suffer from the weight gain issue. So far, my life is near normal. For we all know that exercise is crucial for arthritius sufferers. Better living through chemistry!
Subj: Pain in every joint
I’ve used Celebrex 200mg per day for nearly 5 years for an arthritic shoulder, without adverse effects. I stopped taking it last week because I started taking the near maximum dosage of ibuprofen upon my dentist’s recommendation until I can get in for a root canal. About 3 days after stopping, I began to experience pain in every joint in my body. It took me two days to realize that it might be because of stopping the Celebrex. I took one 200mg capsule and started feeling better within an hour.
Subj: Hair loss after stopping Celebrex
I am writing this on behalf of a friend that has just recently stopped taking Celebrex, she is telling me that it is taking a while for her system to feel normal, she is having withdrawal almost like being removed from and illegal drug. She is also losing hair by the chunk from the root. Her concern is that she will soon be bald. Will her hair return? Sincerely,
AskDocWeb: If the hair loss is related to stopping Celebrex then there is a very good chance that her hair will return. We have never seen anyone that had permanent hair loss caused by this drug.
Subj: Can Celebrex cause peripheral neuropathy?
My husband has been taking celebrex for about 2 yrs. I think his Dr. put him on this for arthritis (that he never had). He has now quit taking it and is experiencing numbness/tingling in his lower legs, feet, fingers and hands. Could this be a side effect due to discontinuing celebrex?
AskDocWeb: That numbness and tingling is called peripheral neuropathy. Celebrex is known to cause this in less than 2% of patients that use it. Unfortunately peripheral neuropathy has numerous other causes. Here is a partial list:
- abnormal bone growth
- bleeding into a nerve
- carbon monoxide
- diabetes mellitus
- exposure to cold
- heavy metals (lead, mercury, arsenic)
- herniated discs
- inherited disorders
- nerve destruction from disease
- nerve destruction from poisoning.
- poor nutrition
- pressure on a nerve
- pressure on a nerve by a tumor
- prolonged periods in cramped postures
- rheumatoid arthritis
- toxic substances
- use of a cast or crutches
- vibration from power tools
- vitamin deficiency
Subj: Ingredients in Celebrex?
Does Celebrex contain asprin? Does it contain iveuroprofin? Is Celebrex a syslicite?
AskDocWeb: Celebrex does not contain aspirin or ibuprofen. People with aspirin-sensitive asthma or allergic reactions due to aspirin or other arthritis medicines or certain drugs called sulfonamides should not take Celebrex. Celebrex tablets contain several inactive ingredients that are binders and fillers:
- Croscarmellose sodium
- Lactose monohydrate
- Magnesium stearate
- Sodium lauryl sulfate
- Edible inks
Subj: Constipation, bloating, and weight gain
I have only been on celebrex for five days, but since I have started it, I have been terribly constipated, bloated and have gained 4 pounds! This in just 5 days – I am afraid of what will happen if I take this stuff for the 12 days I am supposed to. I am taking celebrex for my metatarsalgia, which has sidelined my running game, but was in tears last night over the scale and how bloated and uncomfortable I am. I never feel like this, my diet has been fine, there is no other explanation for these symptoms other than the celebrex. I am also experiencing some stomach pains and bloating at night. I am stopping this drug immediately after reading reviews here and calling my doctor!
Subj: Weight Gain
I started taking Celebrex 200 mg. daily about 6 weeks ago and immediately noticed weight gain. Now I have shortness of breath. Will see the rheumatologist this week and ask for a change of meds.
Subj: Suddenly stopping Celebrex
After taking Celebrex (200mg twice daily) for 2 months to postpone a hip replacement until winter, I decided to stop taking it because it doesn’t seem to help my hip pain. Two days later, while driving home from work, my left ankle began to swell and by the time I got home the pain was unbearable. Could this be the result of suddenly stopping the use of Celebrex.
AskDocWeb: There are no warnings or side effects listed by the manufacturer about stopping Celebrex suddenly. Swelling of the ankles, feet or hands should be reported to your doctor as soon as possible.
Subj: Weight gain?
I am suspicious Celebrex may cause weight gain, but can’t confirm it. I have been taking it for about 5 weeks now for a back injury. While I had been less active, I have resumed normal cardio activity (e.g. substantial walking, 100km cycle 2x week) and am eating less than I usually do. Nevertheless, my weight keeps creeping up inexplicably. Normally, my weight would be tracking downwards with the intake and activity I’ve been doing over the past couple of weeks. Weird, and disturbing. I’m taking myself off the drug to see what effect it has.
AskDocWeb: Unexpected weight gain is listed as one of the possible side effects that should be reported to your doctor.
Subj: Gaining weight on Celebrex
I was diagnosed with Reiter’s Syndrome at the age of 22 (text book case with all the symptoms). I have taken indomethecin (ate holes in my stomach), and asufulzilizen (sensitive to skin). In the last 5 years I have swithed to Celebrex. I went off that after taking mobix(gave me serious stomach problems) for a short time and now back on Celebrex which seems the best for me. From age 22 to age 47 I have gained 40 pounds. I take 200mg a day. Is weight gain due to the medicine I have taken? What will celebrex do to my body if I continue taking it until I’m in my 80s? I also had my galballder removed. Was that due to taking the arthirtis medicine?
AskDocWeb: Since you gained that 40 pounds over a period of 25 years, there are so many other possible causes that you can’t blame the increase in weight on just the Celebrex. Those who have reported a problem in this area report gaining a pound every one to three days. Imagine gaining 60 pounds in less than a year. That is a real concern and should of course be reported to your doctor.
