Subj: Traumatic bleeding

I have taken Celebrex 200 mg for one year. recently I experienced traumatic bleeding, so I stopped the Celebrex. when I restarted it one week later, I experienced the same bleeding after one day. Of course I stopped after one dose and have not had a recurrence in more than one month. I was also taking one regular dose aspirin each day. Clearly, a bad combination.

Subj: Rash on the lower abdomen

Shortly after starting Celebrex, I developed an extremely itchy rash on the lower abdomen. Even though I stopped the Celebrex, it continued creeping further up the abdomen, until it wore itself out slightly above the belly button. We could think of no other reason for the rash, other than starting Celebrex.

Subj: Cut back on usage?

I’ve used Celebrex, 200mg 1x a day, w/ a baby aspirin for almost 10 years. I had been using oxycontin before. I’m also taking neurontin, 600mg 2-3 x’s a day. Their use has been effective but recently I have experienced an increase of some side effects, leg rash, upper abd pain, shortness of breath and would like to cut back. Have any of you tried to cut back on your usage of these drugs? If so what were some of the side effects and any words of caution that I should know about? Thanks,

Celebrex has improved the quality of my life. I am 71 and healthy, although I have had multiple skeletal-musculature problems and surgeries. I take 200mg/daily with prilosec as suggested. I recently had a cosmetic blephloplasty and was told to stop my Vit E, fish oil, and the celebrex- which I did. Why can’t I start the celebrex 48 hrs. after the procedure, instaed of 5 days later? I thought that celebrex hasn’t been shown to effect platelet activity. Do physicians often not want to take any chances and treat Celebrex in the same breathe as other NASAID’S. I can’t believe that my back is bothering me much more than the surgery I had yesterday. Please comment. thanks,

AskDocWeb: While Celebrex may not cause any bleeding problems for most people, there is a concern for some. Celebrex may cause a low platelet count in less than 2% of people as well as the following symptoms that are related to low platelet count:

• Bloody urine (less than 13.4% of patients)
• Decreased “thromboplastin” (blood test that indicates a decreased ability to form blood clots) (3.9% to 13.4% of patients)
• Bleeding gums/teeth (less than 2% patients)
• Blood in stools (less than 2% of patients)
• Bloody or black stools (less than 2% of patients)
• Bruising Bruising (less than 2% of patients)
• Digestive tract bleeding (less than 2% of patients)
• Nosebleeds Nosebleeds (less than 2% of patients)
• Abdominal bleeding
• Abnormal menstrual bleeding (in females)
• Bleeding from stomach ulcer. This symptom can lead to fatalities in severe cases
• Bleeding ulcer
• Disseminated intravascular coagulation (a condition involving clotting factors in the blood that leads to uncontrollable bleeding)
• Increased risk of bleeding. This symptom can lead to fatalities in severe cases
• Vaginal bleeding
• Aplastic anemia (anemia due to decreased bone marrow function) (less than 0.1% of patients)
• Bleeding into the brain/skull Bleeding into the brain/skull (less than 0.1% of patients)
• Low counts of all blood cells including red and white blood cells, and platelets (less than 0.1% of patients)

Subj: Debilitating cramps

I was prescribed 100mg/celebrex q day for chronic pain d/t a fractured coccyx that will not heal. At first it was beautiful. I didn’t realize how depressed I was over the constant pain in my tail bone. It also totally eliminated my severe menstrual cramping. Now, the pain in my coccyx has come back worse than it was before, and my cramps are debilitating. What’s going on?

Celebrex make me gain 40 lbs, I went from a size 2 to a 11 in 5 months. now i’m not on anything. WHY OW WHY DID IT DO THIS!! IT WAS NOT ME EATING 24=7. I ate normal good food for you.

Subj: Weight gain

In 2004..my entire body was fine..no arthritis..then suddenly I began to have differnt pains in joints and swelling..so the firs thing I did was to take ibuprofen. Then a doctor perscribed Celebrex which did nothing to touch the pain…since that time, I’ve been tied to 800mg of motrin 3x’s a day no less or I don’t move..I’ve had one total hip replaced and am having the other one done next week. since that time..2004 until now, I’ve gained 70lbs easy…nor can I move..but I do believe that ANY non steriodial anti inflammatory causes weight gain regardless of the name..unfortunately, the weight issue has created more of a problem than the original arthritis pain that was not dealt with properly..but just some drugs were thrown at it…its now upon me with prosthetics to get this weight off to get healthy again…and it won’t be by taking drugs! they will kill ya!

Subj: Extreme weakness and shortness of breath

I’ve taken Celebrex for eight plus years for ankylosing spondelitis. The past several months I’ve had extreme weakness and shortness of breath, to the point of total exhaustion! I couldn’t walk across the room without needing to sit down while breathing like a race horse. I wound up in a cardiac unit then was sent for various tests. I stopped taking Celebrex three days ago and the symptoms I’ve had for months are GONE! Would I take Celebrex again? Yes, for short term pain relief but be careful of long term use. Scariest part? I told my doctors, ALL OF THEM, about the Celebrex and NONE really paid any attention even though the Celebrex info sheet you get with the medicine lists all those symptoms as occurring in some people. Happened to me! Who knew?

Subj: Severe swelling

I am 57, had orthroscopic knee surgery on my left knee 5 weeks ago. My orthopedist prescribed Celebrex about a month before my surgery to help with my both the pain caused from a meniscal tear and the arthritis pain in the knee. It works wonders for my knee pain, but now I have developed SEVERE swelling and pain in my left foot. I’m trying to wear a compression ankle support, but the swelling is so bad now that the support cuts into my leg. Is this being caused by the Celebrex? If so, I’m caught between a rock and a hard place because it does help my knee pain.

I took Celebrex for two days and now have hives all over the trunk of my body. Yikes. Nothing else in my food or med intake was changed.

AskDocWeb: In the clinical trials for Celebrex 2.2% of users experienced some kind of rash. It is important to check with a doctor to find out if the rash is an allergic reaction or just side effect.

Subj: Sluggishness and drowsiness

The medication Celebrex works very well to keep inflimation & pain at bay. Use: C~Spine ~ CNS . What I DO FIND is the sluggishness and drowsiness but no depression. My solution is to take Celebrex at bed time. I take 200mg once a night.

Subj: Celebrex or Ibuprofen?

Is it safer to take Celebrex or Ibuprofen? I was taking 600 mg twice a day and got some relief but not as much as I would have liked. I recently stared on Celebrex and I am not finding anymore relief so far then when I take Ibuprofen. Can I stop the Celebrex and up my dose of Ibuprofen and feel safer stopping the Celebrex?

AskDocWeb: That is a decision best left up to your doctor. It is not just a question of one being safer than the other, but also depends on your age and what condition is being treated. For those with stomach ulcers or other gastrointestinal problems, Celebrex may be a better choice but it has been associated with an increased risk of heart attacks. The FDA has warned that the elderly risk stomach bleeding or kidney failure by taking anti-inflammatory drugs known as NSAIDs, which includes Ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil, and the naproxen found in Aleve.

Subj: Rebound headaches

I just stopped taking Celebrex 3 days ago after being on it for a month and a half for a running injury. BTW, I never gained any weight from this med. The first morning after discontinuing the Celebrex, I woke up with such an intense headache I couldn’t get out of bed. Each morning thereafter the headache has been tolerable, but present. Now this morning I lay here with a flu bug. I’m wondering if this is all related to withdrawals from the Celebrex. I’ve been researching on side effects of this medication and I’m reading that many patients have this withdrawal symptom (headaches). Not sure if the flu bug is related, although I did find one reader that had this problem also. Don’t you think the physicians would know that their patients need to be weaned off this medication? Have you heard of this? I’m wondering how long these rebound headaches will last.

AskDocWeb: We are not aware of any analgesic medication that does not have the potential to cause rebound headaches. Celebrex and other pain relievers offer relief from some pains but if taken them more than a couple of days a week, they may trigger rebound headaches when discontinued. The Mayo Clinic recommends that you seek immediate medical care if your headache:

• Is sudden and severe
• Accompanies a fever, stiff neck, rash, confusion, seizure, double vision, weakness, numbness or difficulty speaking
• Follows a head injury
• Gets worse despite rest and pain medication
• Is a new type in someone over 50
• Wakes you from sleep

In general you should consult with your doctor if:

• You usually have two or more headaches a week
• You take a pain reliever for your headaches more than twice a week
• You need more than the recommended dose of over-the-counter pain remedies to relieve your headaches
• Your headache pattern changes
• Your headaches are getting worse

Rebound headaches may last a week or two after the medication is discontinued.
