Subj: Meloxicam?
Date: 10/28/2010
Just recently, my doctor took me off Celebrex and prescribed Meloxicam instead. He said this was a safer drug than celebrex. I am one of those people that truly liked celebrex, but it did cause me to have high blood pressure. I want to know how this newer drug compares to celebrex and if it is indeed a safer drug. Thanks,

Annette

AskDocWeb: Unfortunately there is no head-to-head clinical data available to compare Meloxicam with Celebrex. What data is available suggests that Meloxicam may have less or no affect on platelet aggregation. This is important because drugs that inhibit platelet aggregation have been shown to increase bleeding time.

In Europe, meloxicam is marketed under the brand names Movalis, Melox, and Recoxa. In the UK, U.S., Middle East, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and Australia it is marketed under the brand name Mobic, in Germany as Mobec, and in Canada as Mobicox. In Latin America, the drug is marketed as Tenaron, Ilacox, Mavicam, Melocam, or Artriflam.

Subj: LOWER DOSE OF CELEBREX?
Date: 11/3/2010
I DO NOT WANT TO GAIN WEIGHT. EXCESS WEIGHT IS A PROBLEM FOR MY BACK. CAN YOU GET A LOWER DOSE OF CELEBREX CAP, IF THE DR ORDERS IT FOR YOU?

Frances

AskDocWeb: Most people don’t have a problem with weight gain while on Celebrex. According to the 2010 Physician’s Desk Reference, between 0.1% and 1.9% of patients using Celebrex at dosages up to 400 mg daily reported weight gain. Celebrex comes in a verity of dosages; 50 mg, 100 mg, 200 mg, and 400 mg capsules. The patient information for Celebrex says to check with your doctor as soon as possible if you experience unexplained weight gain.

Subj: Basal cell carcinoma
Date: 11/10/2010
I had a small brown spot on my lip that was removed. It came back from testing as basal cell carcinoma. The doctor wants to use Mohs surgery to remove any cancer cells left behind. Can I use the cream curaderm to kill the cancer cells? There is no spot there now just a small indent from where is was removed two months ago.

Thank you.

AskDocWeb: If you want to use Curaderm that is something to discuss with your doctor. We do NOT recommend the use of Curaderm. The purpose of this forum is to collect feedback and comments from those who have used it.

Subj: Any natural herbs?
Date: 11/15/2010
I have been taking celebrex for about 5 years; 200mg at first. Then 100mg after I had a hip replacement; that was 3 years ago. During a regular checkup they found that I had developed high blood pressure. It was 154/100. I have been off for a week; this morning my bp was down to 124/82. I have been experiencing a dull headache since I quit and some joint pain. Also I have lost a little weight; but I am determined to stay off. I am wondering if there is any natural herbs that are safe to use?

Dan

AskDocWeb: In most cases, adding a little spice to meals is a healthy thing to do. Here is a list of herbs used for pain relief.

  • Chile peppers (hot peppers) helps relieve nerve pain and arthritis discomfort when used in topically applied creams.
  • Devil’s claw is a South African herb eases muscular tension or pain in the back, shoulders and neck.
  • Arnica contains helenin, an analgesic, as well as anti-inflammatory chemicals. It is available in creams and tablets used to relieve osteoarthritis pain in the knee and pain following carpal-tunnel release surgery.
  • Boswellia (Boswellia serrata) contains anti-inflammatory and analgesic boswellic acids that can soothe pain from sports injuries and osteoarthritis.
  • Clove oil (Syzygium aromaticum) is a popular anti-inflammatory used mainly directly an aching tooth or tooth cavity.
  • Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) seeds contain 16 analgesic and 27 antispasmodic chemicals but avoid the herb while pregnant or nursing because of its estrogenic effects.
  • Feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium) is used by many people for headaches, including migraines but do not boil them, since boiling breaks down the active parthenolides.
  • Ginger root has analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties that can alleviate digestive cramps and mild pain from fibromyalgia.
  • Green tea (Camellia sinensis) has nine muscle-relaxing compounds, more than just about any other plant.
  • Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) contains 9 anesthetic, 10 analgesic and 20 anti-inflammatory compounds but it’s not for those who have diabetes, kidney disease, high blood pressure, heart conditions, or glaucoma.
  • Oregano contains 32 anti-inflammatories
  • Rosemary and thyme are two other herbs you may want to sprinkle on your food as they contain analgesic, antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory compounds.

Please Note: If you under a doctor’s care then check with them before using herbal remedies. Some herbs interact with medication.

Subj: Flu like symptoms and ruptured blood vessel
Date: 11/19/2010
I have been on Celebrex for about 6 months. I tore a meniscus in my left knee, had surgery, then developed a stress fracture in my left tibia, all within 6 months time. I also have osteopenia and arthritis. Celebrex controls my pain, but I have side effects, so I stopped taking Celebrex about two weeks ago. My pain has escalated in my bad ankle and knee. Now I’m having flu like symptoms (aching ALL OVER!). Also, I had a terrible blood vessel rupture in the top of my right hand after coming off Celebrex. My entire hand is black! I have found information that supports Celebrex causing vessel problems. Has anyone else had anything like this happen to them?

Subj: Weight gain and moody
Date: 11/21/2010
I have been taking Celebrex for approx. a month now for shoulder and neck pain. I have noticed a fast growth in my weight and my moods have been awful with my family. My blood sugars have been through the roof, running at 20-25. I have had trouble breathing and heart races after climbing a flight of stairs at work. I feel very fat and out of shape. I have had spots in my vision and diarrhea that is orange. I have stopped taking Celebrex for now to see what happens. Today is the first day off of Celebrex and I have had a head ache and the pain in my shoulder is worse. But the bloating and fat feeling have gone and I feel breathing is better. Were any of my symptoms from the Celebrex?

Jenn

AskDocWeb: Any difficulty or trouble breathing should be reported to your doctor as soon as possible. The most common side effects are listed here. Moodiness is not listed as one of the possible side effects of Celebrex but a few people have reported mood swings.

AskDocWeb: While there are many things that can cause a false positive on a drug test, Celebrex is not one of them.

Subj: Numbness in leg
Date: 11/26/2010
I have taken Celebrex for years for severe osteoarthritis. First 200 mg daily, then 100mg daily after all the controversy over Celebresx. Periodically I try to go off completely due to the side effects but end up in such arthritic pain I have to restart. Recently I was able to stay off for 10 days and then had to restart. I took one 100mg and later that same day my right leg went completely numb, I couldn’t walk and had no feeling in the leg. It lasted about one hour and gradually returned to normal, even felt cool for awhile, but the leg was warm to the touch. The medics were called and I had absolutely no other symptoms and I returned to complete normalcy – their advice was just to watch and if it happened again to investigate further. I am thinking it was the restart of the Celebrex – ??

JoAnne

AskDocWeb: Numbness in the legs, hands, arms or feet is listed under the less common or rare side effects of Celebrex.
