Subj: Keeping pain under control
Date: 3/17/2011
I have been taking Cerebrex for 1 year for hip and knees pain. Every time I stop it, some new pain comes out. First hands, then neck, shoulders, now biceps, feet, and all muscles in general. I am trying hard to switch to another drug because I am convinced Cereblex makes you addicted. I had some success with ipubrofen but had to stop it because was causing me accelerated heart bit and blurred vision. I am going to try Tylenol but I am willing to go thru pain just to stop Cerebrex. I had some good results with swimming and light weight lifting in keeping pain under control. Especially swimming in sea water helps. I am not going to give up my efforts I don’t want to be slave of a so expensive drug.

Subj: Changed from Celebrex to Arthrotech
Date: 3/31/2011
I had been taking Celebrex for several years for osteoarthritis. I would have a couple of glasses of wine on weekends and holidays and found out the hard way that they don’t mix. I would literally black out, not remembering anything. I gave up alcohol completely, but after about a year, due to other issues, a doctor changed me to arthrotech. Much better, for pain I have ramped up to 3000 units of glucosamine, and after a buld up it works well. This has replaced tylonel 3 for me. Hope it works for others.

Joan

Please note that there are some health concerns about using glucosamine.
Subj: Celebrex & Weight Gain
Date: 4/7/2011
I was prescribed Celebrex for pain associated with my Fibromyalgia about a year ago. I gained about 25 lbs while watching my food intake and eating properly and exercising in attempts to control other health issues. While the Celebrex did help a great deal, I still was in some pain every day. My doctor has prescribed another medication for the Fibromyalgia that is working wonderfully and she had indicated that if it did work for me I could consider going off the Celebrex. I have been off the Celebrex for just under two weeks and without doing anything different, I enjoyed a wonderful surprise when I stepped on the scales this morning and have somehow just lost 8 lbs in less than 2 weeks…now I’m thinking maybe it has been the Celebrex all along.

Subj: Stopped because of serious side effects
Date: 4/27/2011
I have been taking Celebrex daily for about 4 years. I had a knee replacement 18 monthes ago but continued the celebrex for hip pain. I started have serious side effects & stopped cold turkey. My muscles & joints are very painful. How long does this last?

Carol

AskDocWeb: By “this” do you mean the side effects or the pain that the medication was masking. The side effects are not likely to last more than a few days after discontinuing. However, if side effects worsen or persist seek medical attention. If you were referring to the pain that the drug was preventing you from feeling, that depends on many factors and would require an evaluation by your doctor.

Subj: Difficulty urinating
Date: 5/2/2011
I have started taking celebrex daily, been on it for 5 days and then when urinating the flow was slow and felt restricted, the color of the urine did not change much, from pale to slightly yellow, no blood. I (50 md) take Lisinpril daily and cloratdone. No high blood pressure indicated for years. I have tried mavicam, 7.5 mg, prior to celebrex. Should I get off celebrex? Canb I get off Lisinpril and then take celebrex safely?

R

AskDocWeb: Any difficulty urinating may be a warning sign and should be reported to your doctor. He or she can then advise you about the best course of action for your specific situation.

Subj: Less frequent side effects
Date: 5/2/2011
I had been on Celebrex for 5 mos for lower back pain due to osteo-arthritis. It offered minimal relief. Immediately I began having continual mouth and gum sores, which worsened over time. I also started having a rash on my lower back and was treated for both with Prednisone. The mouth sores returned with a few weeks. Recently I started having numbness and tingling in hands and fingers. I had difficulty in picking up small objects due to loss of feeling in fingers. I researched Celebrex on line and found that all of the above are less frequent side effects. I have taken myself off Celebrex and am hoping these side effects will go away permanently. I won’t take Celebrex again.

Subj: Celebrex and exhaustion
Date: 5/9/2011
My mother inlaw has taken celebrex for 2 years. Six months ago she had her heart shocked to put back in regular rhythm. That worked but she now can not walk for any distance, stand for any length of time, or talk for very long without being completely exhausted. They put her on a beta blocker, blood thinner, blood pressure (Divan) medication and she still takes blood pressure medicine. They have done all kinds of test and her heart is fine. The family thinks it might be the medications. Would celebrex contribute to any of these reactions?

Lenita

AskDocWeb: There are several possibilities. First, unusual fatigue is listed as one of the possible side effects of Celebrex that should be reported to the prescribing doctor. Fatigue is one of the more common side effects of beta blockers although most people do not experience any problems with them. Blood thinners may also account for the fatigue, and up to 2% of patients taking Diovan experience fatigue.

Subj: Painful arthritis
Date: 5/14/2011
I took Vioxx for several years and ended up in hospital with congestive Heart Failure. They took me off vioxx immediately, I lost 15 lbs. I have arthritis that is quite painfull so my doctor prescribed Celebrex AND I HAVE BEEN TAKING IT NOW FOR 7 YRS OR SO, BUT AM AFRAID I WILL HAVE SIMILAR HEART PROBLEMS ON IT AS I am short of breath on exertion (I am too heavy again). I have a lot of digestive problems and would like to find something that will Kill the arthritis pain and not affect my stomach, duodenal ulcer and Hiatus hernia.

Subj: Celebrex, hair loss, and Zyflamend
Date: 6/3/2011
I started taking celebrex 3.5 months ago…I’ve lost about 25 percent of my hair. I had a gut feeling that it was not the drug for me. I am going to come off it now and use zyflamend as an anti-inflammatory. I hope I can handle the pain. I will keep you updated.

Sharon

AskDocWeb: Thnaks Sharon. We have heard of Zyflamend but need some feedback from those who have used it.

Subj: Lots pain pills
Date: 6/12/2011
Been taking celebrex and lots pain pills for 10 years, I lived in pain. 4 years ago I doubled celebrex dose. Pain went away guess I worked up a tolerance to them so taking 200mg in morning and 200mg at bedtime for last 4 yrs. 2 months ago pain came back after small injury now doubled again 400mg twice a day. It helped but didn’t get all the way gone.

Eecently had pre-employment physical and drug test I wanted everything out of my system, sick of being dependent on prescription drugs. Stopped 8 80mg oxycontin by switching to methadone and weaning my self off in 3 months. Celebrex I stopped cold turkey had bad body pain, so I started taking 2 800mg ibuprofen every 6 hrs and started simple yoga stretches just 10min per day and healing great, celebrex didn’t work anymore and i was worried about large dose, and would I have to double again in a yr or two. but never had any bad side effects from them just worried about amount I was up to and what would happen down the road. So try ibuprofen and stretches. Good luck.

James

AskDocWeb: The recommended maximum daily dose of Celebrex is 400 mg. There are several studies that show patients taking doses higher than the maximum amount recommended are at increased risk of heart attack and stroke. However, that increased risk is not limited to Celebrex.

A recent study published by the British Medical Journal found that those who had taken ibuprofen over a long period of time were almost 3 times as likely to suffer a stroke and had double the risk of heart attack.

Subj: Terrible heartburn, vomiting, and stomach pains
Date: 6/17/2011
I started taking Celebrex 4 days ago and feel horrible! I have terrible heartburn and I can’t keep anything down. I also have stomach pains. As soon as I eat I throw it right back up. I am not taking anymore!

Tracey

AskDocWeb: Vomiting is reported by about 6% of those using Celebrex. ALWAYS check with your doctor about an alternative medication if side effects become unacceptable.

Subj: Back to my old self with Celebrex
Date: 6/19/2011
I had 5 weeks of radiation, over 100 seed implants for prostate cancer. I had really bad side affects (everyhour or two in the BR) for over 18 months. Finally my family Dr. put me on Celebrex 200MG a day because the only thing that seemed to help was aspirin, after 5 days it was over I was back to 90% of my old self. I’m 67 years old and cancer free for 3 years. The only side affect I had was swelling in my legs and a little higher BP, I quit taking the celebrax after about 6 months and now only take it if my symptoms return. I can finally get out of the house with out worrying where the next BR is.

AskDocWeb: It is possible that you might have one of the contraindications for using Celebrex but it is certainly worth discussing with your doctor. Celebrex has provided a great deal of pain relief to many sufferers of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
