Subj: Consider taking something else.
Date: 5/1/2005
Too much is not known about the side effects. I took Celebrex for a period of about four weeks after a knee injury. Concurrently I experienced flu like symptoms with laryngitis. I stopped for a few days – they went away. I started to take it again after speaking to a second physician – I got the laryngitis again. I stopped altogether.

Subj: Feel like crap on Celebrex
Date: 5/2/2005
I have ballooned since taking celebrex over the past year, I’ve developed all the gastrointestinal problems and light sensitivity, worst of all was knowing that once my skin started peeling and changing to a yellow hue and my gp saying, “Oh, just take omeprozole, but make sure you take the celebrex.” My energy levels are zero and I feel like crap, its back to the tens machine and devils claw for me!

Subj: negative reports about Celebrex
Date: 5/9/2005

I used Celebrex for 5 years and was relieved of ALL arthritic pain with not one side effect. I felt like a champ but stopped the drug because of the negative reports and now have a lot of discomfort. I’m thinking of taking it again but am still fearful. Any advice?

Joan

AskDocWeb: Yes, talk to your doctor about what specific negative reports you have heard or read about.

Subj: Weight gain with Celebrex
Date: 5/12/2005
I have been taking Celebrex for two + years. My weight gain is substantial, and like a previous post, I am embarrassed even to admit the amount of weight gain. When I learned that the weight gain was likely caused by Celebrex, I stopped taking it. Throughout this period of gaining, I have been on a strict diet of healthy foods, with a low caloric intake, and I work out 3-4 times per week with a personal trainer doing both strength and aerobic exercises, and I walk between 3-6 miles per week in addition. Nothing seems to enable me to lose any of this weight that I gained, not any of it. Does anyone have any experience with trying to lose the Celebrex-weight gain, and how long it might take? I am completely frustrated and stymied with this. My doctor just continues to mumble that “there is no medical evidence that Celebrex causes weight gain” and continues to severely admonish me to lose weight and get more exercise and is highly critical of my weight gain. At wit’s end!

Subj: Gaining weight on Celebrex
Date: 5/12/2005
I’ve been taking the stuff for a few months now…exercising like crazy and counting lettuce leaves and GAINING WEIGHT!!! Nothing else could explain this weight gain, highly uncharacteristic for me (5 decades of life with no weight problem until celebrex). I’ve been off the stuff for a couple weeks now. How long will it take to lose the weight? I’m definitely burning more calories than I am consuming.

Jeff

AskDocWeb: How long it takes depends on how much you have to lose. Most experts agree that dropping a pound a week is the healthiest rate of loss.

Subj: Celebrex for inflammation
Date: 5/18/2005
I’m using celebrex for inflammation in my chest. How long does it take it to go away if you use a 200mg dosage?

Leslie

AskDocWeb: : Most people start seeing some relief within 3 doses, but everyone is different, some take a short time and some longer.

Subj: Celebrex lawsuit
Date: 5/27/2005
To whom it may concern my question is my mother was a celebrex user for a period of time, and just passed last year diagnosed with esophageal cancer, as a result of stomach disorders from this drug. My question is do I have a legal case against the makers of this drug.

Andre

AskDocWeb: What you are asking for is legal advice. For that you need to hire an attorney. They will be able to assess your case and see if you have sufficient medical proof to proceed with a lawsuit.

Subj: Xanax
Date: 6/2/2005
Is celebrex almost like xanax

DD

AskDocWeb: No.

Subj: Does this work?
Date: 6/10/2005
I have inflammation in my right shoulder and was prescribed. How long does it normally take to start feeling any relief resulting from celebrex? Does it have to build up in your system? I just started to take it this week, but so far I have no relief from the pain at all! Thank you.

Joyce

AskDocWeb: If you have no improvement in a few days, tell your physician that it hasn’t helped. Your doctor may recommend some physical therapy.

Subj: Celebrex, and percaset
Date: 6/13/2005
Do celebrex, and percaset contain aspirin?

Dee

AskDocWeb: Celebrex causes blood thinning and increases risk during surgery, so even if it doesn’t contain aspirin it is treated as if it does. We are not familiar with percaset so you’ll have to call your pharmacist about that one.

Subj: Violently sick after taking Celebrex
Date: 6/25/2005
Hi, my husband took a 200 mg celebrex tablet around noon one day. (It was prescribed for a sore neck) Soon after that it felt like everything he ate or drank was sitting on his stomach. Later that night while eating supper he became sick and was violently sick until 4:00 in the morning the next day. It has been almost 5 days since he took this pill and still doesn’t feel well. I finally took him to the emergency room, they gave him fluids, ran a lot of tests, (blood work, ekg, etc. ) everything was fine but he couldn’t get rid of the stomach pain, They finally gave him some morphine. He is home today but is still not looking or feeling better. He has lost about 7 pounds in 5 days. Could he have a stomach hemorage no one knows about? Could a 200 mg tablet cause all of this? Thanks!

Denise

AskDocWeb: Yes, it could. It affects everyone differently and it sounds like your husband got the bad end, possibly an allergic reaction.

Subj: What to take for arthritis?
Date: 6/29/2005
Weight gain/bloating is my issue as well. I tried an experiment. I have been on Weight Watchers for a month and lost every week until today. The only variable in my lifestyle that has changed was taking Celebrex yesterday. This is the third time this has happened to me so I’d say the results are in. . . Celebrex does enable weight gain. So it is a trade off — weight vs. pain. Not an easy one. Thanks for this message board. Now I know it is not just me! What else do folks take for arthritis?

Peggy

AskDocWeb: The most commonly used product is plan old aspirin but other NSAIDs also offer relief.

Then there are disease modifying drugs called DMARDs that are used when NSAIDs are not effective. The current popular treatment is to start these early with aggressive treatments to prevent long-term joint damage. Most of the DMARDs are associated with potential toxic affects so close monitoring is required. They include the following:

  • cyclosporine
  • hydroxychloroquine
  • infliximab
  • leflunomide
  • methotrexate
  • sulfasalazine

These are slow acting drugs that take more than eight weeks to become effective.

Other treatments include oral prednisone, intrasynovial steroid injections, and etanercept (Enbrel). A combination of etanercept and methotrexate has also been effective.

Subj: Screaming testimonial for Celebrex
Date: 7/3/2005
I have been using celebrex for several years for severe ddd and djd. I have arthritis and bone spurs in my spine. I quit taking celebrex for 2 weeks prior to surgery. I am in severe pain. I cannot believe what 1 little pill can do for a person when kept constant in your blood stream. I could scream a testimonial for celebrex. I am miserable without it. To me it is worth any risk. I have a cardiac history…but celebrex out weighs any other health concerns. I pray that they never pull celebrex. It helps me although I have trouble getting it through my insurance company.

Debbie

AskDocWeb: Talk to your doctor about your trouble getting Celebrex. He may call your insurance company and explain to them that nothing works except Celebrex, or he/she may provide you with free samples.

Subj: Withdrawal symptoms with Celebrex?
Date: 7/9/2005
I have recently been taken off celebrex for a few weeks due to surgery. I have had some terrible headaches and severe muscle and joint pains (I have rheumatoid arthritis diagnosed). Are their withdrawal symptoms with celebrex. I also take methotrexate and paxel.

Doug

AskDocWeb: Most people are surprised by how much pain the Celebrex blocks. The most frequent comment is, “Yikes, the pain!” The only after affects we have heard of are that a few people have headaches.

Subj: Gaining weight on Celebrex
Date: 7/10/2005
I have been using Celebrex for about 3 weeks and have gained 6.5 pounds. I have been dieting to lose weight and stopped drinking diet soda, replacing it with water. Every time I get on the scale, I continue to gain. My feet still swell making it hard to wear any kind of shoes but slippers. I will probably discontinue Celebrex as the weight gain is only making my condition worse.

Sharon

AskDocWeb: The swelling in your feet should be evaluated by your physician, it could be a sign of a problem that need attention.

Subj: Gained 20 pounds on Celebrex
Date: 7/11/2005
I started taking 200 ml of celebrex 6 weeks ago and gained 20 pounds. I run 3 miles a day, use nautilus equipment 6 days a week. My eating habits were unchanged, I didn’t eat that bad to begin with. I am going back on ibuprofen.

Donna

Subj: Celebrex does wonders
Date: 7/12/2005
Celebrex worked wonders for my chronic degenerative disc disease in my neck. I used to suffer with neck pain daily and now I am pain free.

Christine

Date: 7/18/2005
