Subj: Weight gain and headaches
Date: 7/16/2011
I have been taking Celebrex for 3 days. My foot has been hurting for 2 weeks, Dr. Thinks it’s a workout injury. Anyway the first night I didn’t feel anything, the 2nd night my left foot (the one that hurts) swelled up like a balloon. BUT I had a glass of wine that night. So I continued to take it. What I have noticed is like what others have commented, weight gain. The headaches are bad too. I’m not happy with this medicine and don’t like all the bad comments and risks, so no more for me. I’m back to plain old ibuprophen.

AskDocWeb: Always check with your doctor before discontinuing any prescription medication.
Subj: Celebrex and tylenol?
Date: 7/17/2011
Can I take celebrex and tylenol together?
Yacoub
AskDocWeb: In most cases Tylenol (acetaminophen) can be safely taken with Celebrex however, if the Tylenol is combined with aspirin and caffeine as in Excedrin Migraine there is a concern about the potential for serious gastrointestinal (GI) toxicity, including inflammation, bleeding, ulceration, and perforation.
Due to the risk of these adverse effects, using aspirin with Celebrex and other NSAIDs is not recommended by many of the manufacturers of NSAIDs. Symptoms that indicate serious GI problems include abdominal pain, bloating, sudden dizziness or lightheadedness, nausea, vomiting, anorexia, or melena (abnormally dark tarry feces containing blood).
Subj: Weight gain while taking Celebrex
Date: 7/26/2011
I am also experiencing weight gain while taking Celebrex. I started this medication to treat muscle stiffness while on simvastatin. The symptoms persisted even after stopping that medicine along with general muscular weakness especially in the legs (knees). No evidence of osteoarthritis in those joints although some in the joints of the right hand. No diagnosis of rhuematoid arthritis either.

Subj: Skin reactions to Celebrex?
Date: 8/9/2011
While taking Celebrex I’ve developed several skin reactions. The most troublesome is itching skin and bruising. For the itching skin I use Sarna and prescribed products for psoriasis. Could Celebrex be part of the problem?
Isaac
AskDocWeb: Less than two percent of patients treated with Celebrex experienced allergic reactions so it is possible. Celebrex is a sulfonamide and can cause serious skin adverse events such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS), exfoliative dermatitis, and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), which can be fatal. These serious events can occur without warning and in patients without prior known sulfa allergy. According to the manufacturer’s product information: Patients should be informed about the signs and symptoms of serious skin manifestations and use of the drug should be discontinued at the first appearance of skin rash or any other sign of hypersensitivity.
Subj: Celebrex Withdrawal
Date: 8/10/2011
I had a turf toe injury 2 years ago and have been having foot issues on and off. I used to take Naproxen for a week, then I was fine. But, this time I have a neuroma in my foot. I took Naproxen for the first 30+ days, and started having unusual joint pain, which I NEVER had before. I’m young, healthy and arthritis does not run in my family. I have pain in my hands, elbows, knees, and the toes of my uninjured foot. I am also having issues holding things in my hand. My podiatrist decided to give me Celebrex wondering if it would be better and not effect my joints. Well, it got worse. I stopped taking the Celebrex, as the podiatrist said it is side effect. It has been 3 days and I am still in a lot joint pain. How long does it take for NSAIDS like Celebrex to leave your system? Do you have any suggestions for pain relief?
Erin
AskDocWeb: The half-life of Celebrex is about 11 hours so it can take a couple of days for your body to completely clear it from your system. You need to know that the symptoms of a bad reaction sometimes persist for awhile after discontinuing a drug. Please talk to your doctor about what would be most appropriate for your situation.
Subj: Celebrex for rheumatoid arthritis
Date: 8/14/2011
I have been prescribed Celebrex for rheumatoid arthritis. I wonder how long one must take it to get relief. I have taken it for two days and see absolutely no improvement. Thanks,
Eleanor
AskDocWeb: Celebrex starts working within an hour of the first dose. However, the pain relieving effect can take a while to build up as it reduces inflammation. The pain relief typically increases over time although it may take a couple of weeks to feel the full effect.
Subj: If I stop Celebrex will pain come right back?
Date: 8/28/2011
I was injured at work, a thoracic strain is what the Dr called and after 6 weeks of therapy it was still painful. The Dr said something about the strain aggravating the arthritis that I didn’t know I had and something about trigger points. The next Dr has me taking Celebrex which helps with the pain, my concern is that it is just masking the pain and if I stop the Celebrex will the pain come right back? Thanks,
GEO
AskDocWeb: Celebrex does mask some of the pain but it also does more than that. It reduces inflammation throughout the body, which of course includes the injured area. Reducing inflammation is important to aid in the healing process. It improves circulation so that the blood can more effectively remove toxins and supply the nutrients required to repair the damaged cells. This also speeds up the recovery time. And yes, if you stop taking it prematurely the pain is likely to return.
Subj: Do I have to eat before taking Celebrex?
Date: 9/1/2011
Must I eat before taking Celebrex?
Yvonne
AskDocWeb: Not according to the package insert; Celebrex may be taken on an empty stomach or with food.
Subj: Celebrex insomnia
Date: 9/3/2011
Celebrex is a terrific arthritis pain reliever, however, since beginning taking it 7 weeks ago, I have been unable to sleep. I can count the number of nights of 6 + hrs of sleep on one hand over the last seven weeks. I have taken Gravol or Oxazapam to aid sleep but stay awake through them. So infuriating when the drug is such a help. I will have to stop taking Celebrex so I can sleep.
R.
AskDocWeb: Unfortunately about 2% of those taking Celebrex experience insomnia.
Subj: Coughing a lot
Date: 9/11/2011
I cough a lot after taking the drug.
Robert
AskDocWeb: Hello Robert, and welcome to the forum. About seven percent of those using Celebrex report coughing as a side effect.
Subj: Memory loss and loss of time
Date: 9/12/2011
My mother started on Celebrex a couple of days ago and has begun having memory loss and loss of time. Is this a known issue with Celebrex or could it be some kind of severe allergic reaction? Her doctor knew nothing about Celebrex but was at a loss as to what else to do about my mothers hip pain due to osteoarthritis so when my mother told her about the commercials she had seen for it she prescribed it for her without looking into it and nobody went over possible side effects or drug interactions with either of us.
I went with her to the appointment where the doctor prescribed the medication and since my mother had brought up Celebrex at a previous appointment which I was not at I assumed she had talked to my mother about side effects but I have since discovered that she in fact did not nor did she even know what Celebrex was. I am very concerned about the damage this medication could have caused being mixed with other medications my mother is on for blood pressure and diabetes as well as an aspirin regime for her heart. If you know of any medications for these conditions that may have caused a bad interaction I would love to know since my web searches are turning up surprisingly little clear information about Celebrex aside from it’s wide range of reasons for use.
I really need to know what the issue is so that I have solid ground to go to her doctor with my concerns and be sure that I will be listened to. I am also very upset about the fact that it was even prescribed without first finding out information on this medication by her doctor and discussing possible side effects. The pharmasist didn’t even discuss the effects with us when we filled the prescription. It seems that I am the only person willing to try and go the extra distance for my mother’s safety and well being. She was in a car driving when her loss of time occured and very narrowly avoided several car accidents with myself and my 10 year old daughter in the car. This is something very dangerous and as of now I have had to take my mother’s car keys and revoke her driving priveliges until we are able to figure this out. Memory loss and time loss are not something she has had problems with in the past and only occured after having taken Celebrex for two days so I am convinced that it’s at least in large part the cause of this problem.
Please if you’re able to give me some answers that I can take to her doctor who appears to be clueless about this medication I would appreciate it. If nothing else then to make sure that her doctor does not prescribe this medication to anyone else with similar health and medications as my mother so that I can hopefully help another family avoid the stress and fear that we have all gone through over this situation.
Cindy
AskDocWeb: If sounds like you survived a pretty scary experience. Memory loss is not listed as one of the officially recognized side effects of Celebrex however a small percentage of patients experience somnolence or a feeling of drowsiness. Her symptoms may also have been caused by one of her other medications or an interaction with one of them. The pharmacist is not likely to discuss the side effects unless specifically asked to do that. You might ask your pharmacist for a printout that you can give to your doctor about the side effects.
There are 23 drugs that have a major interaction with Celebrex and almost 500 that have a moderate interaction with this drug. The most serious interactions are with the following drugs and combinations:
