Taking celebrex for Lupus?
Date: 9/23/2011
Is anyone else taking celebrex for Lupus? I have been on it for 11 years. I am questioning some chest pain vs heart burn. I am wondering what I could substitute for it? I am also on plaquenil and mycophenolate.

Joyce

AskDocWeb: If you are not sure your chest pain is heartburn or something else, ask your doctor to help you make that distinction. About 5% of patients taking Celebrex experience heartburn or gastroesophageal reflux. Celebrex is the only COX2 inhibitor on the market and nothing works quite like it.

The most commonly used drugs to treat the inflammation and symptoms of lupus are NSAIDs, Plaquenil and other anti-malarials drugs, steroids, immunosuppressive medications, and DHEA. You can find a short discussion about each of these on the Johns Hopkins Arthritis Center website.

Feeling of fullness
Date: 9/25/2011
I just started using Celebrex two and a half weeks ago and have noticed that I a feeling of fullness even after small meals during this short time is this going to keep up like this or should I try taking dose every other day?

Julie

AskDocWeb: Depending on your condition, you may or may not be able to do that. However, you need to talk to your doctor before making any change to your treatment plan.

Flue like symptoms
Date: 9/29/2011
How long does it take for celebrex to completely get out of your system? I have been taking it for several months and have had undiagnosable flue like symptoms the whole time. I quit the celebrex 3 days ago to see if that is what is making me so sick.

Merry

AskDocWeb: The half-life of Celebrex is about 11 hours so it can take a couple of days for it to get completely out of your system. If you go back and review the side effects of Celebrex you will see that several of them are also symptoms of the flu.

More Crohn’s flare-ups
Date: 10/2/2011
I have chrones disease, herniated disc in the c-5, and a history of migraine, us a nerve pinch in my right hip! I was on hydrocodone, I went in to the doctors and said no more pain killers! She put me in celebrex one month ago. The first two weeks I felt great! Joy, happy again the whole works, then the last two weeks I feel like I have the flu. Aches pains and my chrones has more flare ups! And about two sizes in my cloths! Not good! Confused and tired of pain!

Sarah

AskDocWeb: There are many sources that say NSAIDs cause flare up of Crohn’s and although Celebrex does not seem to cause as much trouble as other NSAIDs it has still been reported to cause flare ups. You might ask your doctor about Imuran, which is used to treat Rheumatoid arthritis but it is also used as a secondary treatment for Crohn’s.

A life saver with no side effects
Date: 10/5/2011
I LUUUUUUUV celebrex. My hands and wrists were severely swollen and nearly frozen in pain. In two weeks with 400mg per day my hands and wrists were almost back to normal. My doctor says his mom had been taking it for 10 years, I’ve been taking it for 4 months. So far its been a life saver with no side effects, and I take no other medications. I do however, take natural supplements as well for healthy joints.

Hope

AskDocWeb: Thanks Hope, glad it’s working so well for you. What natural supplements have you found to be helpful?

Grapefruit juice?
Date: 10/8/2011
Can u take grapefruit juice with celebrex?

John

AskDocWeb: Because this question has come up before we decided to list the drugs that are known to interact with grapefruit. Celebrex is not one of them. It is metabolized by a different enzyme (cytochrome p450) than the enzymes in grapefruit. There is no interaction between the two.

Weight gain with Celebrex
Date: 10/14/2011
I think celebrex does cause weight gain. I work out 5 times a week and am in the military. Sometimes I work out twice a day. I have weighed 115 for the past 20 years and am now at 140lbs. The only thing that has changed is that I have been taking celebrex for the past year. If its not the celebrex than what is it? I havent taken anything else and I have even watched what I have been eating and still no weight loss only gain.

Dianna

AskDocWeb: Hi Dianna, thank you for your service to our country. Unexplained weight gain is listed as one of the possible side effects of Celebrex that should be reported to your doctor.

Celebrex review and opinion
Date: 10/31/2011
The bad:

  • Decreased appetite – after a few bites I feel full. I’ve lost nearly 20 pounds in 6 months without changing anything in my routine.
  • Change in taste – everything tastes bland or yucky. I often get a metallic taste in my mouth. This only started happening after taking Celebrex regularly for a few months. (Editors note: See Drugs that Change Taste)
  • Insomnia
  • Fatigue
  • Dizzy spells (possible related to not sleeping and not eating much)
  • Headaches, but not serious or long-lasting

The good:

  • Easy on stomach, no nausea, no cramping
  • No ‘fuzzy brain’ feeling after taking it
  • Felt a HUGE improvement in pain and function within 2 days of taking it

My opinion: I have recommended it to others. I’ve tried different drugs and this has by far been the best. The side effects are sometimes unpleasant but all anti-inflammatory/pain medication have them. For me, the relief they provide far outweighs the negative side effects and I’ll stay on them unless I find something better.

Pam

AskDocWeb: That was well done Pam. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Fatigue, depression and muscle pain in legs
Date: 11/29/2011
I’ve been taking celebrex 200mb once a day for about 2 months. The last two weeks I have become extremely fatigued, depressed and have muscle pain in both legs, buttocks and ankles. I never experienced anything like this before. Could this be from the celebrex?

Karen

AskDocWeb: Unusual fatigue is listed as one of the possible side effects of Celebrex that should be reported to your doctor. Neither muscle pain nor depression is listed as side effects.

Celebrex side effects
Date: 11/29/2011
Celebrex caused weight gain, extreme stomach bloating, water retention, heartburn, difficulty eating and excessive urination. Also increased irritability and headaches.

Expired Celebrex
Date: 12/4/2011
I had knee replacement was perscribed celebrex insurance did not cover cost. I still have some at home i had before dated 2009 are they ok to take?

Julie

AskDocWeb: That sounds like a bad idea for a number of reasons. Manufacturers calculate the drugs expiration date after testing to see how fast it degrades. The least problem you would have is that the drug would not be as effective. Most consumers do not store their medication under the best of conditions so they may go bad even faster. If you are taking any new medication it may interact with your old one. In some cases old medication is like leftover food, it can cause serious problems if taken past its expiration date. As a general rule it’s a good idea to go through the medicine cabinet once a year and throw out expired drugs.
