gained 30lbs
Date: 2/17/2012
I retired from the USMC 2 years ago and have gained 30lbs. I have continued the same intense crossfit workout regime however started taking Celebrex regularly 1x and sometimes 2x’s a day for knee pain. After noticing the increase in weight reduced my caloric intake and continued hard workouts 4-5 x’s a week. I now weigh 190 which is the most I have EVER weighed even when pregnant. I am strong as a horse but the weight gain consumes my mind. After a suggestion from husband about it possibly happening because of the Celebrex I find myself here. I am on day #2 of no Celebrex and will keep all posted on weight loss…if any.

AskDocWeb: Thanks Sunny. It would also be helpful to share what you are using to cope with the pain.

Stomach issues
Date: 2/23/2012
I starting taking celebrex a week ago after I developed a peptic ulcer from Motrin. One week in and again I am having stomach issues. Should I discontinue the drug and call my Doctor, or is it my body adjusting to the drug? Can it start to bother my stomach that quickly? My docotor told me this medication had less of a chance of causing me the same type of stomach pain. I am lost on what to do!

Lori

AskDocWeb: The patient information for Celebrex says, “If you notice any of these rare but very serious side effects, stop taking celebrex and seek immediate medical attention: coffee-ground vomit, black stools, persistent stomach/abdominal pain, chest pain, weakness on one side of the body, slurred speech, sudden vision changes.”

Celebrex and other NSAIDs can cause are stomach ulcers and gastrointestinal bleeding, and the risk increases with prolonged use. However, the degree to which it causes ulcers has raised some eyebrows. Some scientists feel the amount of damage Celebrex can cause to the stomach is far greater than it should be, and greater than other NSAIDs. Some experts claim these side effects should be emphasized more strongly so that patients can make informed decisions about whether they were willing to assume the risks of taking the drug. These events can occur at any time while taking Celebrex, with or without warning.

Some patients experience only mild stomach upset. For them taking Celebrex with a full glass of water or food reduces that symptom.

RE: Celebrex and weight gain.
Date: 2/26/2012
I am 100% that Celebrex can cause weight gain. I only recently put it together that it was the Celebrex that caused my weight gain. I started Celebrex in 1997. And gradually I began gaining weight. Nothing I did, no matter how little I ate and how much I exercised, prevented the weight gain. And now looking back on the past years there was only one time I was able to lose weight. It was a period I was insured with Kaiser. Since Kaiser will not prescribe Celebrex, I was forced to treat my arthritis with alternative medications. It was at that time that I quickly lost 50 pounds. As I went back on Celebrex the weight came back and then some.

Recently because I had an extreme Crohns flare I had to go off Celebrex. Suddenly weight is pouring off my body. I have always been a careful eater. I have never consumed more than 1200 daily calories and I always exercised daily. I would expect weight loss with a Crohns flare but I am treating the Crohns and not eating that much less than what I was eating before the flare. I have no doubt that Celebrex was causing my weight gain. I realize that not everyone gains weight while on Celebrex so I would assume that there is an underlying condition in some people that Celebrex affects.

The FDA studies state that less than 2% have a weight gain side effect so it is not even listed, except as a possible heart related condition. My experience has been without a heart condition Celebrex is discounted as a cause of weight gain. I am filing a complaint with the FDA. I hope others that have had a similar experience will also.

AskDocWeb: Thank you JD for filing that complaint. After market reports like yours do help make the system work.

Diverticulitis
Date: 3/10/2012
I have been using Clebrex for 5(?) years together with Tylenol for gout arthritis. No more than 200mg of Clelbrex per day and 2 325 mg of acetominaphine. It has always worked like a charm. Except… Last weekend I started beeding rectally, went to emergency room. All the specialitst doctors were hard to get hold of (weekend), and after 21 hours of bleeding (needed transfusion)it stopped by itself. Diagnosais: diverticulitis. Told to stop Celebrex. Now I can’t walk because of the pain.

Anatol

AskDocWeb: Celebrex typically reduces the number of colorectal polyps but a small percentage of patients (less than 2%) using Celebrex have reported diverticulitis.

Weight loss
Date: 3/22/2012
Celebrex 200mg. once a day. Weight loss while on celebrex.

Lou

AskDocWeb: Pain is known to cause a loss of appetite, which can lead to weight loss however, unexplained weight loss should always be reported to your doctor.

Leg pain caused by statins
Date: 4/2/2012
have had cardiac troubles but seem fine now. Statins were creating leg pain. Got so bad I could barely walk in the morning. 200 mg of celebrex daily has me playing golf with no pain/problems. This is after 1 week. Celebrex has given me my life back.

John

AskDocWeb: You may want to read up on the side effects of statins such as Lipitor.

No relief at all
Date: 4/6/2012
I started taking Celebrex 3 days ago and have had no relief at all for my severe knee pain. I feel groggy and bloated. I’ve had a lot of stomach and gas. Doesn’t seem to be doing me any good. After reading of all the weight gain and other side effects people are experiencing, I think I will just try some Tylenol for arthritis.

Katherine

AskDocWeb: Several people have said that they didn’t realize how much pain relief they were getting until they discontinued Celebrex. Gaining weight while on this medication is not an issue for everyone. Only a small percentage of patients gain weight while taking Celebrex and there may be an underlying condition in some people that causes that affect so talk to your doctor about an appropriate alternative before discontinuing.
