Stomach pain
Date: 4/21/2012
This past Tuesday, I had an endoscopy and cholonospocy and was found to have non-erosive gastritis, which most if this cause by NSAIDS over use. Been trying to get my stomach turned around for about a month. Stupid me I asked my GI Doc after the test if I could go back on Celebrex 200 mg one a day for my bad knees and stated I could because I did not have any ulcers. I take two PPIs per day, one in the morning, one at night. Last night was my third dose of Celebrex but forgot to take my Protonix before dinner and since then my stomach has been in great pain. I know I should stop taking the celebrex. I have not coughed up blood or had tarry stools. Just want to know if the pain will go away? Anything else I should be watching for. I can’t believe I did this.

AskDocWeb: Although Celebrex may cause intestinal bleeding in some people, it does not do that for everyone. Since peak plasma levels of Celebrex occur approximately 3 hours after an oral dose, the stomach pain is likely to level off at that point and then gradually subside.

Gained some weight
Date: 4/21/2012
I have recently lost 91 pds on weight watchers and also have had a revision of a knee replacement. I have been taking celebrex for the pain and have gained some weight. I have since gone back to working out and walking regularly but the extra weight has not come off. After reading the othe comments about celebrex I am thinking of going off it.

Worried about the long term effects
Date: 5/13/2012
I am 61 and have been taking 200mg celebrex twice a day for about 4 1/2 yrs now. This was after a extensive back surgery. I am beginning to worry about the long term effects of taking it this long and don’t know what I should do. It does help but still in some pain always. I find I retain fluid always, have gained much weight on top of being very overweight and I do not urinate much at all. Any suggestion as to weather I should continue taking celebrex or not? Thanks…

Terri

AskDocWeb: In order to determine that your doctor would have to weigh the known benefits against the potential risks of using this medication long-term. We suggest reading the Medication Guide about this drug, which is available from your pharmacist. It covers risks that you may want to discuss with your doctor.

Patients on long-term treatment with Celebrex are encouraged to have their hemoglobin or hematocrit checked if they exhibit any signs or symptoms of anemia or blood loss.

Long-term administration of NSAIDs has resulted in renal injury. Patients at greatest risk of this reaction are those with impaired renal function, heart failure, liver dysfunction, those taking ACE-inhibitors, diuretics, angiotensin II receptor antagonists, and the elderly.

Weight gain
Date: 5/30/2012
I started taking Celebrex 200 for hip arthritis pain 2 weeks ago. I’m a thin, active person exercising in water classes 3 hours per week. Celebrex has increased my appetite and I gained 6 lbs. Also, Celebrex has not diminished the pain level that much. I will consult the doctor but will not continue this capsule because I also feel light headed for about an hour after taking it. I have a hiatal hernia but never regurgitated until taking Celebrex. The side effects are too high a risk for me.

Unable to lose weight
Date: 6/18/2012
I’ve been taking celebrex for over 7 years, 200 mg per day for pain in my feet and ankle after a serious ankle break. I’ve gain over 25 lbs and although I eat right I haven’t been able to lose weight. The celebrex is the only way I’m able to walk and continue a normal life. I’m frustrated with the weight gain and can’t seem to do anything to replace the celebrex or find a way to lose the weight – any suggestions!

AskDocWeb: According to the prescribing information on Celebrex, up to 2% of patients taking this medicine during the clinical studies gained weight. Have you checked your BMI to find out if you need to lose weight? Although you said that eat right, there is always room for improvement. Use and Withdrawal of Celebrex
Date: 6/18/2012
While using celebrex I gained 30 pounds in less than 4 months and endured severe stomach pain every time I took a dose. I decided to stop taking it and have experienced extreme headaches and neasau for the past two weeks.

Incredible pain after quitting Celebrex
Date: 6/19/2012
I was on celebrex for nearly 8 years. I recently stopped due to my insurance and the cost. The pain that has hit me is incredible. I can barely move. I was taking it for my knee, but lots of places hurt now. Will my body readjust?

AskDocWeb: We’re sorry to hear you are dealing with so much pain. Most people who stop using Celebrex too soon are surprised by how much pain this medication can mask. You might ask your doctor what other anti-inflammatory would be advisable in your situation. You may also want to consider using herbs to relieve inflammatory pain. Not only are herbs a delicious way to liven up your meals, but they’re a natural way to stop and prevent pain. See Herbs for Pain.
