Subj: Flu like symptoms
Date: 7/31/2005
I have been taking 100mg a day Celebrex for 2 months, since Mobic was taken off the market. Before that I was taking Vioxx for back pain and arthritis. My Dr. has suggested that I try Melrose Fish Oil to help with the pain. I found that this did help, and when I ran out of Celebrex I used only the fish oil. I found that I was very stiff and sore initially, but in the second week off Celebrex I developed what I thought was a virus – flu like symptoms for a week – feeling better today. Could this be a reaction to coming off Celebrex?

Barbara

AskDocWeb: It sounds like you may have had a bug.

Subj: Celebrex and swelling
8/26/2005
I went off celebrex after taking it for 4 years with all the controversy about it I decided to go off. I took another over the counter drug for about 4 weeks but as soon as the celebrex got out of my system my pain was pretty bad but while I was off my bloating went down and my face went down but had to go back on it. Now my hands are swollen, my face is swollen, feet, legs, I feel terrible mentally and physically. I have not done very well since I went back on it. Should I stay on it in spite of the severe swelling. Is it one of these cases that you have to take the bad with the good. OR is this a reaction? I take 200 mg twice a day.

PC

AskDocWeb: It sounds like a case where your doctor should decide if you should continue taking it or not. It may be possible to adjust your dosage to get rid of the side effects and still obtain relief from the pain but in general, you would not continue with the swelling you describe.

Subj: Celebrex and Vioxx
9/1/2005
I have taken celebrex off and on for years up to a year at a time. I have noticed no side affects. Vioxx worked better for my pain until one day it caused stomach pain that would not subside until quitting the vioxx completely. I exercise regularly and noticed no change in my weight.

Subj: Celebrex, hypertension and arrhythmia

I was taking Celebrex for 4 years 200mg per day and developed hypertension and arrhythmia. Unfortunately here in Australia we do not seem to care about side effects. Any one else had this complaint?

Subj: Weight gain with Celebrex
Date: 9/5/2005
After having to fight my insurance to reinstate my Celebrex that I took over five years now for arthritis pain, I decided to actually read the package insert regarding the side effects. I was horrified to see unexplained weight gain listed as a possible effect. Not once has anyone ever told me this. Over five years I have desperately tried to stop a steady weight gain and never once considered Celebrex as a potential cause. I have a tendency to gain weight but have always been able to diet and exercise and see some loss as a result until about five years ago. I hired a diet doctor, went on a wide variety of diets including protein, and exercised, yet continued to steadily gain until my current weight where people have advised me to have bariatric surgery. I quit Celebrex immediately. It is too soon to tell if this is going to help me lose weight. I am sure that this is what did this. I feel encouraged that I will now be able to lose weight. This effect is being underplayed.

Subj: Celebrex alternatives?
Date: 10/14/2004
I have been taking Celebrex for the last 60 hours for acute back pain. Although the medication is great for the pain, I noticed a 4 lb weight gain in the 2.5 days on the med! -I am only 5’2″, so that amount of weight is a lot for me. I have been dieting for the last 8 weeks and have lost 20 lbs. I continued on the same diet during the Celebrex and actually gained 4 lbs. Needless to say, I was mortified when I stepped on the scale this morning, as I am working SO hard on my weight loss. I imagine that it has got to be fluid retention, but after visiting this site, I am questioning the continued use of the drug due to weight gain. Any suggestions on what to take in place of the Celebrex?

Abbey

AskDocWeb: Yes, there are several alternatives to Celebrex. The use of ice and stretching exercises for the back along with Ibuprofen has proven beneficial for many. Or you can ask your doctor about Skelaxin. Your acute back pain will take time to heal but physical therapy would be a great help.

Subj: Celebrex insomnia
Date: 10/18/2004
I feel like I want to jump out of my skin. I can’t sleep it’s like heebee jeebees. Is this a side effect of celebrex???

Diane

AskDocWeb: One out of every 43 people taking Celebrex experience insomnia. Please report this to your doctor.

Subj: Swollen face
Date: 12/3/2005
I started Celebrex a year ago because of joint pain and lack of energy. I am 47 years old and have never weighed more than 124 pounds. I am now at 138 and my face looks swollen all the time. I have been monitoring my blood pressure and it is high. I stopped taking the Celebrex 4 days ago. Today I am feeling like I am getting a cold and have had a bad headache. Could this be a side effect from stopping the Celebrex and is it likely that the high blood pressure is related to this drug also?

Kelly

AskDocWeb: The swelling is not likely to be from the Celebrex, more likely you could be catching a cold which could cause headaches. It could also be a sinus infection. Keep an eye on your blood pressure and if it’s over 145/88, make an appointment with your physician. If you are taking cold medicines, that could also cause your blood pressure to rise. If your hands and feet are also swollen then you are retaining fluid and need to see your doctor.

Subj: Gained weight
Date: 1/10/2006
I have gained nearly 80 lbs since I began taking Celebrex. I am a former Elite athlete. I couldn’t figure out why my efforts to lose weight just weren’t working. I have tried to cut back to one pill every other day since the onset of the new year and I am finally seeing the pounds drop off!

Subj: Weight Gain
Date: 1/17/2006
I’m 46, 5’9″, and have consistently weighed between 165 to 175 lbs for many years. Due to some chronic back pain, I started taking Celebrex a couple months ago. Guess what I weigh now… 190 lbs! I’ve started going to some fitness/aerobic classes, but from what I’ve been reading here, I think I’m going to try stopping the Celebrex for a month to see what happens.

Subj: Feel like I’m dying
Date: 1/24/2006
Been taking celebrex since 5-05. Can’t say it is a wonder drug although it helps. I have had two episodes of dizziness tingling and numbness in lips fatigue nausea. I have not had my B/P checked but I feel like it is up. Black spots in front of eyes. In other words I feel like I am dying as I am trying to type this. Called my doctor can not get into see her today. Have no insurance so can’t go to e.r., arthritis is unbearable without celebrex.

Cathy

AskDocWeb: If you ever feel this way again, go immediately to your physicians office, and if they do not have any openings, go to an urgent care clinic as a walk-in. Don’t risk your life because you have no insurance. No one can refuse you just because you have no insurance (in the USA). You can apply for financial aid. The clinic should have these forms to fill out.

Subj: Celebrex and alcohol
Date: 2/21/2006
I notice swelling in my hands when I wake up in the morning and wonder if it is a result of taking Celebrex and drinking alcohol. I maybe have one drink in the evening two or three times a week, but the next day there is stiffness in my fingers as they seem swollen.

Susan

Subj: Foot pain
Date: 2/22/2006
I have been taking celebrex for about 6 months for pain in my feet. I stopped smoking almost a year ago, gained weight, and was trying to walk to lose the weight. My extra weight put stress on my feet and caused my ankles to always be swollen and excruciating pain always (like walking on broken bones) I’ve been exercising, eating between 1000-1200 cal a day- under 30g of fat…and not only am I not losing weight, I’m actually gaining. I’m going off the Celebrex, but it scares me because it has brought much relief. I’m not sure what else I can take to stop the pain.

Jackie

AskDocWeb: The same thing happened to our nurse, now all that works is Tylenol arthritis strength and Ibuprofen. You could see a podiatrist to have custom made inserts put into your shoes. This may relieve some of the stress put on the bones and your insurance is likely to pay for them.

Subj: Swollen hands and ankles
Date: 3/13/2006
My dad has been taking celebrex for over a year. He’s been having swollen hands and ankles. They are painful and much worse in the morning. Is it possible to acquire this side effect after having taken celebrex after over a year on a daily basis? His only other meds are asprin and protonix, which he also has taken daily for over a year. Thank you for your reply.

Molly

AskDocWeb: It doesn’t sound like it, more likely this is a problem with his circulation.

Subj: Weight gain with Celebrex
Date: 3/31/2006
I have been taking Celebrex for 3 years and the have gradually put on 20 additional pounds in spite of a healthy diet, and walking 1.5 to 2 miles per day. I am going off of it to see if Celebrex is the cause of this. I am at my wits end to find any other source of the weight gain problem. What is the percentage of people in the studies that had this problem?

MARY

AskDocWeb: According to the manufacturer, weight gain was reported by less than 2% of users, although an exact figure was not given.

Subj: Celebrex hives
Date: 4/1/2006
I only took celebrex for a couple of weeks and had a very bad case if hives/itchy rash small welts that grew together until my hole body was covered. It is not pleasant. I had a very bad two weeks, and ended up having to go to an allergy doctor for it. It would not go away even after I went off the celebrex, it just kept getting worse.

connir

AskDocWeb: Sounds like you had an allergic reaction to celebrex. If we notice even one welt, it’s time to discontinue taking the drug and use Benadryl until the welt is gone. There is no need to wait until your body is completely covered and you end up being totally miserable.

Subj: Celebrex weight gain
Date: 4/22/2006
I came to the computer and searched for “celebrex + weight gain” as I have gained 10 lbs since I started the drug six weeks ago. Guess what I’ve decided?

Luckily, I have a magazine article about “natural pain relief” on my refrigerator door. I’ll be investigating that now. Thanks for the info on this site.

SC

Subj: Burning pain in abdomen
Date: 4/28/2006
I took one dose of celebrex for cervical bone spurs. I have had a burning pain in my abdominal all day and night.

Amy

AskDocWeb: That burning pain is a sign that something is wrong. Please consult with your doctor about discontinuing celebrex and changing to something else.
