Other arthritis pain relievers?
Date: 12/30/2013
celebrex worked well for arthritis pain but chest pain, shortness of breath and indigestion was caused by celebrex. Are there other arthritis pain relievers that work as well as celebrex without the aforementioned side effects?
Mark
AskDocWeb: Celebrex is unique in that it is the only COX-2 selective NSAID currently remaining on the market in the United States. There are alternative ways to reduce inflammation. Have you explored using herbs for inflammation?
Celebrex review
Date: 1/9/2014
I started taking celebrex 4 months ago. I was prescribed it for the intense inflammation my auto-immune disorders cause in my system. The major Auto-Immune disorder which is causing the inflammation has so far been elusive to my doctors, but I have two others that are controlled through other medications. I actually see 10 pound weight loss when on Celebrex. I take 200Mg once a day. I take it in the morning, and by the evening usually weigh less than I did at the beginning of the day.
I may be asking my doctor to split my dose to see if the inflammation I experience in the morning may be helped by the switch. I have gastro issues (IBS) and find that the Celebrex doesn’t aggrevate this. All in all I am 100% satisfied. BTW, I had to go off of Celebrex due to insurance fits about “formulary” brand, I have been on naproxen, IBProfin, narcotics, and all other items, this keeps my pain to a manageable level and makes me feel a TON better. Would definitely recommend that you TRY it, and see how it affects you.

Celebrex review

Ok..here we go…I took Celebrex last week for osteoarthritic pain and it worked well for 3 days. Then I had horrendous side effects. My stomach bloated and I had a lot of pain in my abdomen and above the pubic bone also. I’m still recovering, slowly, have hardly eaten in the past few days. I have not even been up to going back to the doctor regarding this problem as I thought it would clear up by now, but I will go see him tomorrow. I stopped taking the medication after 3 days and would NEVER EVER in a million years take this drug again.

CYP2C9 sensitive?
Date: 1/28/2014
Have taken Celebrex 200 mg twice a day for 15 years for pain of scoliosis and other orthopedic anomalies similar to Marfan’s without the heart dissection issue. The last 5 years I’ve had severe leg pain, cramps and swelling, particularly at night. The last year I’ve gained weight despite cutting my food intake so that I now eat only one small meal a day. Now I wonder if I’m a poor CYP2C9 metabolizer, having had trouble all my life responding to medications with many unexpected adverse reactions, now exacerbated by my long-term Celebrex use. (Examples are one day OTC Delsym causing 1 week no bowel response or movements, 2 days of the asthma drug Singulair making me suicidal, one dose of a nerve drug like Neuronton causing complete urinary retention for several days, antidepressant drugs failing to work wholesale although I tried at least 12), etc.
Doctors get angry when I report weird side effects (“no other patient had ever had this reaction!”) and tend to want to dismiss me as a “problem patient.” I’m a 64-year-old female and weigh 110 pounds, and always suspected the problem was that I was getting too much medicine with prescriptions geared, as they are, to much bigger people. Then I was told I likely have a collagen defect that contributed to my scoliosis as well as being what my spinal surgeon calls a “super healer.”
Now I wonder if I’m CYP2C9 sensitive, too. How do I find out? There is no genetic testing where I live in SE NC. (Only other drugs I’m on are Nexium 40 mg for severe GERD, Estratest HS (the only drug HRT that works for hot flashes), a multivitamin, and Zyrtec in season for severe allergies.)

AskDocWeb: CYP2C9 is an abbreviation of Cytochrome P450 2C9, an enzyme that in humans is encoded by the CYP2C9 gene. To our knowledge, variations in this gene can be identified only by DNA testing. If you discuss this concern with your doctor, he or she may be able to make a referral for testing.
CYPs are the major enzymes involved in drug metabolism and bioactivation, accounting for about 75% of the total number of different metabolic reactions.
Any suggestions for losing weight?
Date: 2/18/2014
I have been trying to lose weight with restrictive diet from low cards, sugar-free, low fat, and exercise – cannot lose even a pound. I called the Pharmacist and she said that it is reported that 1% of the people have reported weight gain. She advised me to stay on it but I think I will look for an alternative and see how it goes as I am desperately trying to lose weight. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

AskDocWeb: If you haven’t already done so, you might have a dietitian or nutritionist review your current plan. It’s not enough to just avoid those foods that are bad for you, you need high quality nutrition to optimize your health. Improve the quality of what you eat and you improve your quality of life.
Celebrex side effects intolerable
Date: 3/19/2014
I was given Celebrex in hospital following spinal surgery and given a take home prescription. While I am grateful for the pain management that accompanied my acute post op care, as my condition gradually improved the costs of the drug’s side effects outweighed their benefits. I found the side effects intolerable, so much so, that I chose to suddenly discontinue Celebrex without supervision. When not sleeping the whole day or in some forgetful stupor, I had painful swelling of the feet and hands, trouble focusing and balancing, and trembling hands. It interfered with my physio rehab. Sudden discontinuation produced one night of sleeplessness and 4 days of diarrhea, a small cost for feeling alert and fresh again. I will happily wait for the post surgical neuropathy and swelling to subside WITHOUT Celebrex’s unhelpful side effects.

Bronchitis and diverticulosis
Date: 3/19/2014
I am a 64 year old female and have been on and off Celebrex for 10 years now. It is a miracle drug for pain but…..until about 3 years ago I only took it a week or two at the time for what I would call flare ups with my back, then I had some really bad problems and had to stay on it more often, like almost everyday for the last 2 1/2 years. During that time I have had bronchitis and diverticulitis, oddly enough back to back 3-4 times a year. Yeah, really. Talk about discouraging.
Well just today I decided to find out via internet if these itis’s could be related to Celebrex. I couldn’t believe it! I have been so busy singing it’s praises that it never even dawned on me. Neither my internist or my gastroenterologist ever even considered it either. My gastro doc couldn’t understand why I could have diverticulitis so often as I had only a mild case of diverticulosis, which would never bother most people. I guess my love affair with Celebrex just ended. Hope this post helps someone else.
Trish
AskDocWeb: Thanks Trish, you are right. Diverticulitis has been linked to the use of Celebrex. The chances of this side effect increase for people who are over 60 years old, have been taking the drug for 1 to 6 months, also take Lipitor, and/or have Hypertension.
