Subj: Weight gain on Celebrex
Date: 5/3/2006
I have been taking celebrex for a few months and I have gained 15 pounds. Can I loose it easily by stopping or has it done something to my metabolism?
Arlene
AskDocWeb: The affect is only temporary and you should be able to lose the extra weight. Perhaps not as easily as you would like but yes, you can lose it.
Subj: Irregular EKG
Date: 5/7/2006
I’ve been taking celebrex for just over a year and have gained 20 lbs. A couple of days ago I had my first irregular EKG and have been referred to a cardiologist. Could the weight gain and irregular EKG be caused from Celebrex? I decided to stop taking the drug and can only hope the pain in my hip doesn’t return.
Fatcat57
AskDocWeb: The weight gain could be caused by Celebrex but the irregular EKG is caused by something else.
Subj: Alternative for pain relief
Date: 6/1/2006
I have been using 200mg of celebrex a day for 2 years. While of found it effective for pain relief, I have been wondering why I have put on 8kg. After joining a weight lose clinic I was informed that celebrex contributes to weight gain, fluid retention and constipation (another of my complaints). Can you suggest an alternative for pain relief.
Julie
AskDocWeb: To make a decision that is right for you, you’ll have to talk to your doctor. Depending on what type of pain you have he may go with Darvocet N-100, Skelaxin or something else.
Subj: Fibromyalgia and hysterectomy
Date: 6/17/2006
I have been on Celebrex (200 mgs. 1X per day) for about 9 months for what has been diagnosed as fibromyalgia, and Soma (350 mgs. 3X a day) for 6 years for what was diagnosed as cervical strain (“dowagers hump”). I had a complete hysterectomy 7 months ago and since the fibromyalgia dx, and the hysterectomy, I have gained about 35 lbs. I cannot differentiate between whether my weight gain may be from the hysterectomy/hormone changes or the Celebrex. I am discontinuing the Celebrex as it has not helped with the fibromyalgia much anyway. It seemed to all start around that time. Oh yes… I also noticed that my fibromyalgia started immediately after I began the Lupron shot series (3 months) for endometriosis, back in June of 2005. Any ideas or can anyone relate?
Michele
AskDocWeb: The weight gain is probably due to both the hysterectomy and the Celebrex.
Subj: Celebrex weight gain
Date: 6/22/2006
I too have been taking Celebrex for over 4 Years now. But it is in conjunction with Actonel, Miacalcyn and Prempro for a bad case of Osteoporosis (I am now 55). I also noticed, if I forget or do not take it, you’re right, the PAIN IS BACK!
It has been a blessing for the back pains and ‘Everywhere’ else arthritis pain, but I also have gained a substantial amount of weight. I have never been this heavy. Is this a side effect from the Celebrex? My Dr doesn’t seem to notice. Is there anything I can do to stop gaining weight? I am relatively a very healthy person, except for the arthritis.
Thank you for any assistance. Sharon

AskDocWeb: Several people have reported gaining weight while on Celebrex. And those same people also reported that no amount of diet and exercise could shed that weight until they quit the drug.
Subj: Pain came back with a vengeance
Date: 6/26/2006
I have been off Celebrex for 4 days, and the pain came back with a vengeance, today. I take one 200mg. every other day, and Aleve on the days I don’t take Celebrex. I’m afraid I will always have to take Celebex for any quality of life. At least, I’m pain free only taking it every other day.

Subj: Degenerative disk disease
Date: 7/2/2006
I have been taking Celebrex for several years. I have degenerative disk disease, arthritis in several other places and fibromyalgia. Celebrex allows me to function pretty well. I can’t stop taking it because, if I am without it even for a few days, the pain and stiffness is debilitating.

I didn’t see a response to the question asked about how long it takes for celebrex to start helping. When will I know if it ‘not’ working if I don’t know how long it takes to be effective? If it is not helping I will stop it–certainly don’t want weight gain since I had a gastric by-pass 19 months ago.
Bonnie
AskDocWeb: Celebrex should begin working within a few hours after taking the first pill. You may not notice that it is working until you stop taking it and then yikes, the pain! Only a small percentage of people gain weight with Celebrex.
Subj: Celebrex packs on the pounds!
Date: 8/1/2006
I am a 57 year old woman and have taken Celebrex for Osteoarthritis and plantar fasciatis since it first came on the market (don’t remember how many years). Celebrex also aids in reducing inflammation from a back injury. I have always been a slender person; however, I have been fighting weight gain and edema and have gained 80+ pounds since I first began taking Celebrex.
Initially, I believed my weight gain was age-related; however, when it continued in spite of my efforts to halt it, I came to believe that Celebrex contributes to my weight gain. It is the only Rx that I have ever taken on a daily basis (200mg. per day). I was not able to lose weight on diets, Weight Watchers, etc. combined with moderate exercise, until I stopped taking Celebrex. After a week or two of dieting and not taking Celebrex, I started seeing the weight drop off. However, the pain got so bad that I started taking Celebrex again.
I consulted my doctor, who did not seem concerned about my enormously swollen ankles. He said weight gain is not a proven side effect of Celebrex. I have been on this back-and-forth lifestyle for years now. I, too, believe this side effect is genuine and is underplayed. After reading the feedback at this web site, I fail to see how the manufacturer can claim that only 2% of the people taking Celebrex experience weight gain!
My stepdaughter’s doctor prescribed Celebrex when she sprained her ankle. She gained 12 pounds in less than 3 weeks on Celebrex, and her doctor had her discontinue it immediately. I am to the point that my weight gain is causing as much pain as the arthritis initially did, and I am concerned about other complications from the excess weight. Before Celebrex, I had gastro problems with Aspirin and Advil, but I am going to try Ibuprofen or something other than Celebrex.

Subj: Swollen feet
Date: 8/27/2006
I have had strong pain in my ankles along with rapid swelling for about a week. No pitting in the ankles, what so ever. I was put on celebrex. After a few days – the swelling and pain has moved to the rest of my feet and now there is fluid retention with pitting in both feet and ankles. People say it is similar to a pregnant woman’s swollen feet, if not far worse. And now I feel as if the pain and swelling is moving up my legs and now it in my knees. I’ve had a doctor tell me to get off the celebrex and see a doctor as soon as possible for it may risk fluid around my heart or side effects similar to that. And then other doctors tell me to not worry about it. I just got off of the celebrex. Does any of this sound familiar? Should I be concerned?
Whitney
AskDocWeb: Of course you should be concerned about swelling in the legs and feet, it shouldn’t be happening at all. It sounds like you should get a complete physical.
Subj: Love the help Celebrex gives
Date: 8/27/2006
I have been on Celebrex 200mg twice a day for at least five years might be more I forget. I love the help it gives both of my graft sites in my hips after many spinal fusions. Also I would not be able to move with out it as it really takes care of the inflammation in my hips and lumbar spine.

Subj: Serious Celebrex side effects
Date: 9/1/2006
My doctor prescribed 200 mg. of Celebrex a day to treat a torn shoulder muscle and arthritis in my writ and hand. Within the first four days of taking the medication, I experienced a growling stomach, gas, diarrhea, and a headache in my right temple, which only got worse. I was tired throughout the day and felt sickly. I tried taking the dose in the afternoon with lunch versus in the mornings, but my system reacted the same. On the thirteenth day I took another 200 mg. tablet of Celebrex after dinner. Within an hour of ingesting the Celebrex, I began to feel heat in the back of my mouth or throat, which quickly spread to a burning sore throat. Within hours I developed very severe flue symptoms, too. I woke up ill several times that night with serious flue symptoms. The next morning I woke up looking like I had been on a 24 hour drinking binge. I was sooo sick and I don’t drink. I called my doctor with my list of symptoms or side effects, who immediately told me to stop the medication as I was apparently highly allergic to SULPHA drugs like Celebrex. 48 hours later I am still so sick with the flue and sore throat. Be careful. I called the FDA to ask how such a drug could be approved? I was told it was found to be beneficial for treating colon cancer and some other serious diseases. I was asked how long I had been taking Celebrex. I replied 13 days. Next I was told to watch for the signs of kidney damage, liver damage, bleeding stomach, and a heart attack. It was recommended I have someone with me for a few days. When I checked the FDA sight and another sight for Celebrex side effects, it warned of fatal heart attacks with no warning. I’m still very ill from the 200 mg. of Celebrex taken daily for 13 days. I hope I’ll be fine. PLEASE BE AWARE OF BOTH THE SHORT AND LONG TERM RISKS AND SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS OF CELEBREX.

Subj: Celebrex is effective
Date: 9/13/2006
I have been taking celebrex for over a year for joint and back issues and have noticed that the drug is very effective in preventing hangovers. I used to get very severe headaches from heavy drinking and for whatever reason celebrex prevents them when Asprin/motrin do not. Any specific reasons this occurs?
Mike
AskDocWeb: Celebrex is a pain medication, it reduces pain.

Dear DocWeb, I have been taking Celebrex for probably 4 years, and at one point, Methadone for pain, as well. I take Trazadone to get to sleep at night, as well as Melatonin to help get to sleep more quickly before the pain sets in. I feel a need to start getting off more meds as I get older (I’m 61). I did get off the methadone by myself several months ago, and couldn’t believe it when I noticed that after the initial withdrawal period that I actually felt a little better! I also take Acetaminophine 3x daily at 400mg a dose. If I go off the Celebrex, will I have withdrawal as well? I’m trying to limit my meds. I am also diabetic, and tho’ I lost 90 pounds over a three year period, I notice my fibromyalgia and other arthritis ailments are not much better, tho’ getting off the Meth did help. I studied studiously about Meth and the way it makes one feel more pain as time goes by, in order to meet the addictive requisites of the drug. I’m glad to be off of it, and wonder if Celebrex acts the same way? Does it make you want more of the drug to cover the same way as it used to? Having severe back and hip pain has become a way of life, but I’m getting more and more concerned about all the drugs I take for pain relief.
I read that Melrose Fish Oil gave one person relief. Why? What is there about that product that is better, or better for my health and pain, than Meth, Celebrex, and Trazadone? My pain tolerance is very low, and it scares me that I may need more and more of various drugs to be even moderately comfortable into my later years. Help!
Sandra
AskDocWeb: Withdrawal symptoms may occur with Celebrex but nothing very bad. You may feel a little more tired for awhile. We have no information on Melrose Fish Oil.
