Subj: Celebrex for arthritis
Date: 9/26/2006
Hi, I’ve been taking 100mg of Celebrex for about 2 years once or twice a month. I was diagnosed with arthritis (I had extensive tests) in my lower vertebrae. I had been in terrible pain for about 6 months… the doctor prescribed 200mg. I asked him to change it to 100 mg twice a day. After 3 days the pain was gone and hasn’t returned. Now I take it for different aches and pains, not often. I am 60 and very healthy. My doctor said there was no problem with me taking it only when needed. I find it amazing.

Subj: Feel awful on Celebrex
Date: 9/28/2006
I am on celebrex and I am DEPRESSED. This is totally crazy I feel AWFUL. I started Celebrex 4 days ago and I have noticed that after I eat I am totally nauseous or I have no appetite at all. I noticed the depression yesterday. I am tired, unmotivated, angry, edgy, and feel like I am carrying a huge rock with me everywhere I go. I have studied depression enough to know that this is not me at all. I hope this helps someone.

Subj: Chest pain
Date: 10/13/2006
I started using Celebrex in April of 2006 and since have had to go to the hospital twice with chest pain. I have also gained about 20 lbs. I have been researching and found that Celebrex causes water retention, gastro problems and others. I am having an Endoscopy done next week as my doc is trying to figure out what are the causes of the pain. I used to be a runner and like the 46 year old, started experiencing knee pain. They linked that pain to OA and prescribed Celebrex for it. I hope that is not the cause of all my problems because it sure helps my knees!

Subj: Celebrex

Recently had a partial knee replacement and it seems that whenever I take Celebrex for any discomfort, I get fluid on knee. Is this a coincidence or is the Celebrex causing fluid on the knee?

Caron

AskDocWeb: It is not a coincidence, Celebrex is known to cause fluid retention in some patients.

Subj: Celebrex after surgery
Date: 10/31/2006
Started taking Celebrex after surgery to repair a torn ACL and it worked wonderfully to reduce swelling around the incision. When I ran out, ibuprofen, didn’t help so the Dr. gave me more Celebrex. I’ve had headaches for several years and they’ve worsened over the last couple months. Saw an ENT and had a CT scan found a cyst filling one sinus. I don’t know how much more pain I’d be in (pre-surgery) if I didn’t have the Celebrex for the Cyst and a deviated septum. No side effects, no complaints here!

Subj: Celebrex swelling
Date: 11/6/2006
I have been on Celebrex for about four months for bipolar achilles tendonitis and for the first 2 months thought it was great. BUT, for the last 6 weeks I have been putting on weight and my feet, ankles and lower legs are constantly swollen. Am I glad I checked your site. I am discontinuing the Celebrex right now. I will find an alternate method of dealing with the pain. This swelling is painful in itself.

Subj: Skin fragility
Date: 11/20/2006
My 9 year old daughter has Sever’s disease and JRA with uveitis complication. Can’t take Naproxen or Tolmetin (or similar NSAIDs) because it causes skin fragility on her face and hands, causing poc marks and lesions. Does Celebrex have the same side effect?

Jenn

AskDocWeb: With your daughter’s fragile condition, she should visit a specialist to see if she can. Celebrex isn’t like a NSAID, but it’s still a risk.

Subj: Changes in urine flow with Celebrex
Date: 11/28/2006
I’ve been using Celebres only as needed on bad days for disc problem and knee pain. It works very well and I can function normal. But if I’ve been on it more than 3 days, I feel like I have a swollen prostate, a normal good flow changes to a dribble. I’m 47 and have a normal prostate examine when not using Celebrex.

Subj: Heart palpitations with Celebrex
Date: 12/10/2006
I have taken celebrex twice for anti-inflammation relief from ligament and muscle injuries. Each time about 2 months duration. It was more effective than Naproxene. I stopped using it when I developed some heart palpitations. The palpitations ceased after discontinuing the medication. I need to use this drug again for a short period but I’m afraid of possible side effects. What is the shortest amount of time a person can take this medication and still get some temporary relief?

Jim

AskDocWeb: It sounds like you mean without the heart palpitations, it’s better not to take the chance. Please talk to your doctor about an alternative, like Skelaxin.

Subj: Gained 80 pounds
Date: 12/13/2006
You gave the wrong dosage for celebrex, it is 100 mg 2x a day or 1-200 mg pill once a day…and yes it cause weight gain. I work out 3-4 times a week too and walk as well and have gained 80 pounds over the past few years, most of it in the first year but the arthritis is so bad that even if I try to stop taking it I can no longer walk or exercise or do anything at all. I seize up and have enormous pain. I am caught between a rock and hard place too. Re the previous question…Percocet is a (percodan) narcotic combination pain reliever…USA uses the name Percodan…Canada Percocet…same pill.

Hella

AskDocWeb: Have you been tested to see what type of arthritis you have? It may be possible to get a steroid injection in the area that is causing severe pain. Although it can take up to a week and a half to begin working, it may be worth asking your doctor about it.

Subj: Celebrex flu?
Date: 12/31/2006
Until recently my husband was on celebrex 200 bid for 6 years, but stopped it 2 days ago due to chronic tinnitus and hearing loss. He thought that his hearing would improve if the ringing decreased. About 24 hours after stopping the celebrex “cold turkey”, he experienced nausea, vomiting, headache, return of joint pain and thought he had the flu, but I think it’s the celebrex withdrawal. I appreciate the other comments about “celebrex flu”, and I wonder if it’s idiosyncratic, or related to length of time of use?

Jennifer

AskDocWeb: It seems more likely to be related to the length of time the drug is used.

Subj: Ban on celebrex?
Date: 1/3/2007
Is there still a ban on celebrex?

John

AskDocWeb: A group called Public Citizen has called for a ban on both Celebrex and Bextra, but the FDA has not banned them. According to the Public Citizen, Celebrex raised the risk of serious cardiovascular events to 3.6 times that of a placebo. Celebrex and Bextra are the only two cox-2 inhibitors on the market.
