Report on Chondroitin Side Effects and Usage

Chondroitin

Natural health supplements sometimes have unexpected side effects or interactions with medication that can lead to adverse reactions that are sometimes life threatening. The following is a list of cautions that you should be aware of before using Chondroitin. These are referred to as drug/herb interactions.

Warning 1 – Contraindications: Chondroitin is not recommended for children. It is used mainly for the treatment of osteoarthritis (a condition that affects adults), and its safety for children has not been studied. Chondroitin has not been studied for safety during pregnancy or lactation.

Warning 2 – Anticoagulants (blood thinners): Chondroitin may cause increased bleeding when used concurrently with anticoagulants such as Warfarin (Coumadin).

Warning 3 – NSAIDs: When combined with NSAIDs, chondroitin can cause increased bleeding.

Warning 4 – Salicylates: Chondroitin can cause increased bleeding when used concurrently with salicylates.

Used as a natural health remedy: Chondroitin is used internally for the following benefits and conditions:

  • Osteoarthritis, especially hip and knee OA
  • Reduce joint swelling and stiffness
  • Reduce symptoms of overactive bladder

Most studies so far have combined chondroitin with glucosamine. Because of this, it is not possible to determine the effect of chondroitin alone. Most studies show that chondroitin needs to be taken for two to four months before it shows effectiveness. However, that effectiveness persists for up to three months after treatment is stopped.
