Report on Coriander Side Effects and Usage
Coriander
Natural health supplements sometimes have unexpected side effects or interactions with medication that can lead to adverse reactions that are sometimes life threatening. The following is a list of cautions that you should be aware of before using Coriander (Coriandrum sativum). These are referred to as drug/herb interactions.
Warning 1 – Contraindications: None
Warning 2 – Oral Antibiotics: Coriander may increase the effectiveness of oral antibiotics.
Warning 3 – Breastfeeding and pregnancy: women should not use excessive amount of this herb.
Used as a natural health remedy: Coriander is used internally for the following benefits and conditions:
- Bacterial or fungal infections
- Bowel spasms
- Diabetes – Some animal studies indicate that coriander can be used to stimulate the secretion of insulin and lower high blood sugar.
- Diarrhea – Coriander oil contains alpha-pinene, beta-phelandrene cineole, and borneol andlimonene, which have both anti bacterial and antifungal properties useful in treating diarrhea.
- Dietary fiber – The coriander leaves contain minerals like iron, magnesium and manganese and is rich in vitamins A, B, and C.
- Hemorrhoids
- Hernia
- Increase milk flow in breast-feeding women
- Infections caused by bacteria and fungus
- Intestinal gas (flatulence)
- Joint pain
- Loss of appetite
- Lower blood sugar
- Measles
- Nausea
- Osteoporosis – The vitamin K in coriander may prevent activation of cells called osteoclasts that cause bone loss.
- Prevent food poisoning
- Spasms
- Stomach upset
- Toothaches
- Upset stomach
- Worms
Side Effects of Coriander
The known side effects of using Coriander include:
- Coriander increases your skin’s sensitivity to sunlight and UV rays. This Increased sensitivity might put you at greater risk for sunburns and skin cancer.

As with any herb, a serious allergic reaction is possible. Seek immediate medical attention if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction. These may include a rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.
Other common names of Coriander: Cilantro, culantrillo, dhania, chinese parsley. The seeds are usually known as coriander while the leaves are called cilantro.
