Is Cardiomyopathy a “rare” side effect of Didrex? Or is a common one? Thanks.
Maureen
AskDocWeb: We haven’t seen this one listed.
Subj: Didrex and pregnancy
Date: 6/2/2005
I have been searching everywhere and cannot find any information regarding the risk and affects of taking Didrex while pregnant. All I can find is info saying don’t and don’t take while breastfeeding. But, what if you’ve been taking it and you become pregnant (accidentally) what affects can the drug have the first month or 2?? Any response will be greatly appreciated. Thank you,
Rachel
AskDocWeb: If you think about it, it’s not to hard to figure out that any effective diet product could stunt your baby’s growth. Have a talk with your OB/GYN on what effects it may have on you.
Subj: Chest pains with Didrex
Date: 6/8/2005
Hi, I’ve tried didrex in past and it has worked. I did not suffer any severe withdrawal symptoms but I did notice my chest hurting, when I was using didrex. I’m not sure if this was related to my didrex usage? I am physically healthy with no history of heart problems. Because I was so successful with weight loss on didrex I am contemplating if I should restart usage? I am 5″4 with weight of 230 lbs.
Sandra
AskDocWeb: Yes the chest pains could be related to the Didrex. You should discuss this with your doctor before using Didrex again.
Subj: Strange effects of Didrex?
Date: 7/30/2005
Can didrex affect your sinuses? I find I can’t breath very well, stuffed up bad, have been taking now for 2 years and can’t stop. One month only lasts one week for me, 90 pills a week! What do I do?
Sarah
AskDocWeb: This sounds like you have moved into drug abuse. There have been no reports of sinusitis with Didrex but then, when you get close to a lethal dose you can have some very strange reactions. We suggest you go to your doctor as soon as possible.
Subj: Info on drug Didrex
Date: 8/8/2005
I can not stress enough how habit forming Didrex is to anyone. Not just those who are “addicts” or are “chemically dependant, no sir, not me. I got hooked on the best pharmaceuticals drugs money can buy, by respectable drug pushers/dealers like Pfizer and Roche and SmithKline Beecham. OK SOME FACTS ON DIDREX, this is just based on extensive research I have done for myself and its debilitating effects on me. Didrex when taken as prescribed in 50 mg increments is metabolized by the body and shows up as both amphetamine and methamphetamine in urine. So this will give you a ‘dirty; drug test. Also, I have taken adderall, ritalin, dexedrine, fastin, etc. NOTHING HAS QUITE FLOORED ME LIKE DIDREX, can not get out of bed, can not function, and then I have to take about twice as much when I get some to wake up. It’s basically sending me to rehab but when I think of the thousands of dollars I have spent ruining my body and mind, it makes me ill. And it will creep up on you, after a while you start forgetting how many you have taken or when the last one you took was, I’m down to 90 didrex every 2 weeks, sometimes I take 12 sometimes just 3, it varies.

Subj: To all
8/29/2005
I am 31 years old and have never been over weight but I had a hysterectomy and then my 10 year old son had a brain tumor so with all of the stress I went up to a 148 pounds. Being 4′ 10″ it was not healthy so my doctor, who new my history of heart problems and etc. put me on Adipex 37.5mg. I thought, wow this is great finally something to help me lose the weight as I’ve tried everything natural I could but nothing worked so I figured the doctor knows best. But now 8 months later. I’m only down to 120 pounds and have completely lost control over my nervous system, muscles, joints, speech, handling little things, like remembering what I had for breakfast. And being a Sunday school teacher and accountant I’ve really lost everything. I constantly move my body by jerking it kinda like restless leg syndrome and to make matters worst, I cannot go back to my doctor as she has retired and the assistant that kept giving them to me has moved to another location and I can’t find him either. So now I am trying to get off of this medication as it is destroying my life as I’m always yelling and complaining and I have never been like that in my life nor have I ever taken any medications, not even the hormone pills after the surgery as I wanted to always have a pure system. Now it’s contaminated with this useless medication that can do more harm than good. So if you are on it I advise you to please stop taking it and have a family member stand by your side as the withdrawal is horrible. The way I see now it is if God wanted me to stay small he would of kept me that way.
So now I’m going to try and find an attorney and see what can be done about this medication just being given to anybody and from what I’ve seen online it’s only supposed to be used for a couple of weeks and yet my doctor has had me on them for 8 months. I still have a 2 months supply left to me, it’s like they want to keep giving them to people no matter what the outcome of the situation is and this is very sad. Well please somebody let me know if I stand a chance at anything or am I just wasting my time. Regards,
Adonna
AskDocWeb: Please get a complete physical to determine what is going on that needs immediate attention. You have too many symptoms going on at the same time that should be addressed immediately. He may send you to a neurologist for further testing.
Subj: Didrex with Valium?
Date: 10/5/2005
Is it safe to take both Didrex and Valium? Didrex in morning and valium (if needed) at night? Also, I need to take Valtrex when I get a herpes outbreak. Is it still effective? Thank you.
Beth
AskDocWeb: It depends what the Valium is meant to do for you. Please discuss this with your physician.
Subj: Didrex hair loss?

AskDocWeb: Not according to the manufacturer.
Subj: What?
Date: 2/7/2006
I know its co-comitant use is contraindicated secondary to an excessive stimulant effect but does caffeine increase urinary excretion? does it increase or decrease blood levels?
Curious
AskDocWeb: It sounds like you need to discontinue the caffeine, wait 24 hours and ask your question again. We understand that you want to know about the blood levels of something but what?
Subj: Raynaud’s syndrome
Date: 2/16/2006
Hi, I have recently been diagnosed with Raynaud’s syndrome. I took Didrex for many years as a stimulant, rather than an appetite suppressant. Wondering if the diagnosis may be related. Anyone know? As diet pills, as well as many OTC cold meds are contraindicated with Raynaud’s, I am no longer using Didrex. Coffee (also contraindicated!) doesn’t do it for me. ::sigh::
Holly
AskDocWeb: For those asking, What is Raynaud’s syndrome? (also referred to as Raynaud’s phenomenon): This is a condition where blood vessels (arteries) in the fingers and/or toes react to cold temperature and/or emotional distress by over contracting. When these blood vessels contract too much they reduce the flow of blood through the fingers or toes to the point where cells can start to die. Left untreated, ulcers and less often, gangrene can result.
There is a primary and secondary Raynaud’s syndrome and it is important to differentiate which one you have. Primary Raynaud’s syndrome can typically be managed by non-medical measures such as avoiding exposure to cold, using warm gloves, hats, and garments in the winter, and avoiding stressful situations. The goal is to prevent ulcers and gangrene on the fingers and toes.
Secondary Raynaud’s syndrome is a more serious condition that can develop as far out as ten years after the onset of primary Raynaud’s syndrome. Treatments include calcium channel blockers, prazosin, reserpine and guanethidine, pentoxifylline, captopril, topical nitrates, prostaglandins and ordinary aspirin.
Raynaud’s syndrome occurs in about 12% of the population with women being four time more likely to have it than men. It can be drug induced by b-blockers, ergotamine, methysergide, vinblastine, bleomycin, and oral contraceptives.
Subj: Is Didrex safe?
Date: 3/2/2006
I am about 100 pound overweight. Is it safe for me to take this medication for 8-12 weeks? And what are you supposed to do once you stop taking it?
Lynda
AskDocWeb: First have a consultation with your physician, so she/he can make a plan for you that includes exercise. After you achieve your goal you will have another consultation with your physician. At that time you will change from a weight loss program to a weight management program, so you are able to maintain your weight.
Subj: Taking didrex
Date: 5/1/2006
I’ve taking didrex for a few days now…feel better, mood and sex drive elevated, appetite suppressed, but because of all the negative comments, I’ve switched to only 1/2 dose and may even take every other day. I’m not pre-disposed to addition, so I think this will be fine…I do need a “happy pill” every once in a while and this works for me and I still feel in control. I will update later this week if anything changes

Subj: Bad experience with Didrex
Date: 5/4/2006
Don’t use it. I didn’t need to loose weight, but the energy it provided helped sustain what I thought I needed. The effects after several years.. yes .. years.. have been catastrophic.. DONT start it.

Subj: Didrex pill is addictive
Date: 5/9/2006
I took didrex for 1 year. Lost about 30 lbs. Total and kept it off that whole year. It came off within 3 months. However, after I stopped, I became so irritable. I was rude to my husband, very edgy, short tempered, tired all the time, not myself. On it, I was soooooo happy, would dance in my car, had a great time at work, always cleaning my house, always ready to do what ever with out a care in the world. Life was dandy. But I was so wired all the time, had the shakes and talked alot. I was even babysitting one day and realized that I had not put the baby down for 6 hours. I held her the whole time rocking her and slow dancing with her. She loved it, but my legs were so soar the next day. Anyway, my point is. The didrex pill is addictive and it made me someone I am not. My husband had a lot of patience to put up with my tantrums, fits, crying episodes, and just plain rudeness. I am thankful that I stopped. It felt like eternity but I did it. I am not any medicine nor did I use any to treat my side effects from withdrawal of didrex. Just cold turkey, I stopped and my husband helped me with his patience. I love him more than ever because of it.
