Subj: The problem is
Date: 9/9/2008
Didrex has helped me to loose 20 pounds. The problem is the Dr. I have been going to for weight loss hates Didrex and will not prescribe anymore. She wants to use Adipex instead. Does anyone know of a Dr. in the Atlanta area who will prescribe Didrex?

Lisa

AskDocWeb: The REAL problem is that these weight loss drugs lose their effectiveness over time and if you haven’t reached your goal then you have to go with an alternative. Please follow your doctor’s advice.

Subj: Lexapro and Didrex
Date: 9/16/2008
I take 20 mg of lexapro daily and I was given didrex by my doctor and I was wonder should I continue to take these two prescription together or what side effect are associated with the two?

Shalillian

AskDocWeb: The side effects of Didrex are listed here and the side effects of Lexapro are listed here. There are no drug interactions between the two.

Subj: Didrex in urine?
Date: 9/22/2008
How long will Didrex show up in urine and, if you have a prescription, can it still affect employment?

Jill

AskDocWeb: It can take up to 2 weeks after discontinuing Didrex before it doesn’t show up in drug screens. As for affecting your employment, that depends on your company policy, the test they use, and the procedure for handling such things. Some businesses are more understanding than others.

Subj: Fever blisters on my face?
Date: 10/1/2008
I have been taking didrex for 4 months, I have not lost any weight, it does give you a sense of feeling great and confident. When I run out, I say I am not going to renew because I havent lost any weight, but then I find myself thinking about it and making excuses for myself to get another prescription just one more time. It makes you moody, but you dont think so, just those around you must have a problem. Also, I keep getting fever blisters on my face which I never had before, and coincidentally a friend of mine has had the same problem when she takes it. Didnt read anywhere about this side effect!!??

Janice

AskDocWeb: You are correct, fever blisters are not listed as a side effect of Didrex. Please have a doctor check this out, it could be something that requires treatment.

Subj: Long-term effects of Didrex
Date: 12/11/2008
I have taken Didrex for 30 years, since I have an addictive personality, I am miserable when I try to quit, and have managed to quit for six months, but the minute I start gaining weight or wake up depressed cause I don’t have Didrex, I just go back. Question, other than the normal side effects that are always listed, does anyone know what the long term effects are. Surely must be some after 30 years of use. Help, I can’t seem to find the answer to my question on the internet. Thanks.

Starr

AskDocWeb: To our knowledge, the long-term effects of using Didrex have not been studied. The manufacturer specifically states that this drug is only for the short-term management of obesity.

Subj: Narcolepsy and drug test
Date: 12/20/2008
After trying what seemd like hundreds of different medications to reduce the effects of narcolepsy, I was put on Didrex 50 by my neuroligist. I lost weight when I first began taking it but now I stay about the same weight all the time. My question is, why do I never hear about this drug being prescribed for this illness? I have been on it for several years and it has given me a chance to have my life back and not be afraid to do the things I like to do nor go somewhere by myself with my Grandchildren, which used to terrify me for fear of falling asleep at the wheel of my car.

Another question I have is that I have never used illegal drugs of any type, but I had to take a drug test for a job and the results came back both amphetamine and methamphetamine. Would this cause this type of result on a drug screen and is there something I can do or test I can take to show this is a much needed medication and not something illegal? I would think that these test could tell the difference between prescription drugs and street drugs. I was very embarrassed by this test result,

Lisa

AskDocWeb: Didrex is most often used for the treatment of obesity but it is also used in the treatment of narcolepsy, attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity, abnormal behavioral syndrome in children (minimal brain dysfunction), and depression.

Other people have also been surprised by the results of their drug test. Didrex is an amphetamine-like drug, so much so that it has shown up as a false positive on some urine drug tests. The false positives can be ruled out with a GC/MS confirmation test.

Subj: Genuine Didrex

I would like to ask “Nicole” that asked about detecting genuine Didrex. My dodctor prescribed Didrex 8 days ago and have had great results with it. However I wish to order more online as I have 1o lns to go. The question was sent 03-26-2005. You described the 50mg tablets white/orange in color I got from my doctor and pharmacy. I wish to know which Online Company you ordered from. I would like to order myself. Thank you.

I have taken this product on and off for the last 6 years. I have not found any really bad side effects. The only problem I’ve found is getting a doctor to give it to you. I have lost probably 30lbs total and have been able to maintain the weight loss.

Subj: Treating adult ADD?
Date: 2/24/2009
My mom had been on Didrex for 20 years mananged by her physican for narcolopsy, she had always took it as prescribed and gradually increased over time. Started at one 50mg per day to 4 a day after 20 years. As an adult I was having symptoms of Narcolopsy and was also diagnosed with adult ADD. I started taking ridilin and it made me very spacy. I tried my moms didrex and it really helped me focus. I talked with my doctor about trying it as an alternative. She agreed since it is in the same stimulant catergory. It allows me to still have my mind race but I am much more able to organize the thoughts vs. Ritilan and adderal making me spacy and not myself. Is didrex similar in its effects for this? I seen some places that Didrex is a schedule II vs. adderall and Ritilan being a Sch. III. Is didrex less potent? Have they studied it for the use of treating adult ADD?

Lindsay

AskDocWeb: The different schedules for drugs indicate their potential for abuse, not their potency. As far as we know, there are no studies involving the use of Didrex to treat ADD although others have reported similar beneficial affects.

Subj: No didrex in test
Date: 6/28/2009
I am 34 have chronic painful life and the depression is horrible so 2 yrs ago dr prescribed didrex I love it. Then couple days ago had to do urine test wasn’t worried had all drugs in my system then I get call saying no didrex in test how is that possible have you heard of that I no longer get them and have to quit cold turkey sucks.

Sally

AskDocWeb: When someone says that they love their drug, that can indicate a possible problem, especially when the drug is one that is habit forming and subject to abuse. Didrex was never intended for long-term use. The maximum recommended duration of therapy is 8 to 12 weeks.

Subj: Tried many different diets
Date: 8/12/2009
I was a meth addict for 15 yr and quit.3yrs later and 90lb … I have tried many different kind of diets…with little to no results…then 10 more pounds…I exercise for 1 minute and stop…what do you suggest?

Linda

AskDocWeb: It sounds like you may need the help of a support group. We place a high value on support groups because you get to find out what other people in your situation did to successfully overcome their problems. You also get and give each other encouragement.

Subj: Does it keep you awake?
Date: 11/1/2009
I have had a stoke 7 years ago which has left me very slow and sluggish, tired, unmotivated, and to add insult to injury, have been diagnosed with extreme daytime sleepiness or borderline narcolepsy. I have been taking Dextrostat for 7 years (30mg 3x day) just to function near normal. Dextrostat has now been discontinued and a generic brand is now made, which does NOT at all do what the non-generic brand of dextrostat used to do. I have tried provigal, nuvigal, desoxyn, adderall, Ritalin and concerta with no luck. I do not get addicted to these drugs, because quite frankly, I need to take them to keep up with everyday life, and do not mess around with the prescription AT ALL. I have asked my Dr to research Didrex for me but mainly what I need to know is: does it keep you awake, give you energy and hopefully motivation? I welcome your comments. I am a 46 year old woman and not overweight, with no eating disorders.

Linda

AskDocWeb: It sounds like you want something that you can use long-term. That is probably not Didrex because it is for short-term use. Although Didrex as a stimulant, it is also habit-forming. You can become physically or psychologically dependent on this medication.

Subj: I can not sleep
Date: 11/2/2009
I took adipex about 8 years ago and lost over 50 lbs in 4 months. I just started back yesterday and I can not sleep. Is this normal? Will it just take some time to get used to it again? Is it ok to take a sleep aid?

Emily

AskDocWeb: Insomnia is one of the possible side effects of taking Didrex. This is especially true when it is taken too late in the day or too close to bedtime.

Subj: Extremely tired
Date: 12/8/2009
I have been taking didrex on and off for a year. I have maintained my weight loss, but like a lot of people, I am extremely tired when I am not taking it. How long does the fatigue last? A lot of posts have said they are tired, but I haven’t found one that says how long this side effect lasts.

Concerned

AskDocWeb: That is because rebound fatigue varies so much from one person to the next. It is not likely to last more than a week after discontinuing.

Subj: Didrex for ADHD?
Date: 12/12/2009
Would a Dr. Prescribe Didrex for ADHD? or BP-650

David

AskDocWeb: That has been known to happen. Didrex is one of the medications that are prescribed off-label to treat ADHD. This is outside of the scope of their FDA-approved uses however, since it has been licensed for other indications it has also been proven to be safe in those populations. Here are some of the other drugs that have been successfully used off-label to treat ADHD:

  • Amantadine (Symmetrel)
  • Amineptine (Survector/Maneon)
  • Bupropion (Wellbutrin)
  • Clonidine
  • Milnacipran
  • Modafinil (Provigil/Alertec/Sparlon)
  • Pemoline (Cylert)
  • Reboxetine (Edronax)
  • Selegiline (Emsam via transdermal patch)

Occasionally Tricyclic anti-depressants are also prescribed but they seem to only treat the hyperactive part of the condition.
