Subj: Bad news
Date: 1/22/2009
I have permanent eyebags also. I recently found a picture of me when I was 2 yrs old and I had them then also. For the teenagers who asked, the bad news is, they don’t go away and unfortunately, mine have gotten worse as I have gotten older. Prescription creams DO NOT WORK-save your money!! Allergies DO NOT make them worse! Sinus surgery will NOT make them go away – I had that done, as well (but I do breathe much better!). My advice to the young ladies would be try try try not to wear concealer as long as you can because once you start wearing it, you won’t be able to leave the house without having it on. Be glad you’re a girl and you have that option…the poor guys don’t. I’m holding out hope that soon there will be a magical laser treatment that will fix it.

Subj: I’m allergic to pets
Date: 2/16/2009
My parents say I’m allergic to pets, and that’s the cause of the circles under my eyes. The circles under my eyes are purple and you can see my veins under my eyes clearly. There is no way that I will give up my pets, so is there another way to get rid of the (veiny) bags? I’m 11 years old if that helps. Thanks,

Kelly.

AskDocWeb: At age 11 there is still a chance that you will outgrow the allergy and it may go away without you doing anything. You might have heard about how snake charmers sometimes take small amounts of their snake’s venom over time to build up immunity to that poison. With repeated exposure to your pets over time it is possible that you may build up immunity to that allergen.

Subj: Allergy test
Date: 3/11/2009
I have an 8yr old daughter who seems to have permanent dark eyebags. Whether she is tired or not they are always present. She has had them since birth and I too suffer from undereye bags but not as prominanent or as dark in colour. I am desperate to know what can be done to make them better in appearance as she is now beginning to become conscious of them and is she is fed up of people asking her if she has had enough sleep. We have a cat and she drinks whole milk and eats wheat in the form of cereals and bread products. Can I demand an allergy test from my GP?

Maria

AskDocWeb: You could demand an allergy test from your GP but if you really want expert advice about allergies, consult with an allergist.

Subj: Dark circles under my eyes
Date: 4/1/2009
I take seroquel 25-50 mg nightly ( it is an anti psychotic prescribed for me to sleep. I am also a very heavy snorer. I have tons of post nasal drippage and get very dehydrated from the medication. I do get at least eight not so solid hours of sleep nightly but for the past six months the dark circles under my eyes have gotten worse. I can’t seem to get rid of them -any correlation.

Seroquel and snore black eyes

AskDocWeb: It is likely that the dark circles under your eyes are related to your “tons of post nasal drip” and here is why. The veins around the underside of the eyes drain into the nose. When your nose becomes congested or is blocked up, those veins become restricted and the flow of blood is reduced. This causes the flow of blood under the eyes to slow. The veins under the eyes become engorged causing them to swell larger and appear darker.

Subj: Sontinuous bags under my eyes
Date: 4/1/2009
Recently have experienced the sontinuous bags under my eyes. I have tried so many brands of eye creams and nothing helps. Makes me look and feel terrible. Anything you can share to change this situation for me? Many many thanks,

Shelley

AskDocWeb: Our first step would be to find the cause of this situation. When you get your yearly physical ask your doctor to recommend an appropriate specialist so that you can do something about this.

Subj: For the past 3 weeks
Date: 5/12/2009
I’m 22 years old. I’m healthy and athletic. I’ve had bags under my eyes for the past 3 weeks. I’ve never had bags before. I thought it was caused by allergies, or a sinus infection. I tried Reactine for allergies and Sudafed for a sinus infection or sinus congestion and it didn’t help at all. I’ve cut down on all salty foods and I’ve been drinking plenty of water. I sleep around 6-8 hours a night. During the 3 weeks I’ve had them, I was out of town for work and I stayed in a hotel. I’ve noticed the swelling went down a bit, those two days. Possibly something in my place? Any Ideas?

Mike

AskDocWeb: It sounds like you already have a good clue as to the cause since the condition improved when you changed environments. Since you never had the eye bags before there is a good chance that you can get rid of them if you can identify and get rid of the cause. Think back over the previous month, what new products did you bring into your home? Did you change your brand of soap, laundry detergent, shampoo, or buy new clothes or furniture? If you can’t identify the cause then it may be worth your while to consult with an allergist.

Subj: What’s up?
Date: 5/18/2009
I am 17 and have developed bags under my eyes. they came up quite suddenly and they wont go away. So what’s causing them. Is it the hormonal changes I’m going through. My dad has eye bags so could it be hereditary, the only thing is I never had them before, I have just developed the over this year. So what’s up?

Pete

AskDocWeb: Getting bags under the eyes is known to be hereditary. You might as your dad how old he was when his showed up.

Subj: Cucumber slices
Date: 5/18/2009
I don’t have under eye bags, but after crying for a prolonged period, I get very puffy under eye and upper eye lids. I apply cucumber slices for about 15 minutes with amazing results–no more puffiness! I don’t know if this would work for others who have puffy under eye areas that are not the result of crying, but it is worth a try.

Subj: What can I do?
Date: 5/19/2009
I’m only 16 what can I do to get rid of eye bags except the washclothes or even the make up?

Charmine

AskDocWeb: You might have to experiment a little to find out what works for you. Readers have suggested placing chilled cucumbers on them for various lengths of time ranging from 10 minutes to a half an hour. Others suggest using potatoes, wet tea bags, or even hemorrhoid cream. And because you have two eyes, you can even test two products at the same time. Let us know if you find something else that works.

Subj: Allergies
Date: 5/30/2009
Thank you for this informative page. I am 15 years old, and I have eye bags. My mother also does, but both our cases are pretty minor, hers being a little worse. Anyways, I’m wondering what we can do! We both do have allergies, but it’s not something that we can really control.

Lauren

AskDocWeb: You may not be able to control your allergies but there are things you can do. If you can identify what you are allergic to then you can remove that allergen from your environment or at least reduce it.

Subj: Congestion and terrible bags under eyes
Date: 6/2/2009
Thank you for this website! I have been visiting my mother and yesterday, cleaned her carpets and ceilings. Because after some family members moved out of her home she was left with cat dander and dogs hair amongst other things, inside her carpeting. I awoke this morning with congestion and terrible bags under my eyes. (never had before) I hope it is from the allergy I have to cats and that it will subside after I am away from this environment. This website put me at ease with confirmation of my own suspicions. Do you suspect my eyes look this way because of being so close to and being so close to all of this left behind pet dander? Thank you.

MJ

AskDocWeb: That has happened to others so it is quite possible. Just make sure you launder the clothes you wore there to get rid of those allergens and let us know if that cleared things up.

Subj: Black lines?
Date: 6/23/2009
What are other methods besides natural that can be done to get rid of black lines? I use to rub my eyes alot and find that there’s a deep almost wrinkle even when not smiling. Can you use botox for this as well?

Crystal

AskDocWeb: Botox works for wrinkles that are caused by muscle contraction but not for eye bags. You would have to check with a dermatologist to find out what to do about your black lines.

Subj: Puffy eyes
Date: 9/3/2009
I always have discoloration under my eyes, that’s okay because I can cover it. But when I wake up, my eyelids and underneath the eyes are puffy. They usually go away as the day continues. I’m 21 and have no know allergies, but I am really tired all the time for no known reason. I sleep 8-10 hours a day. I am also slightly underweight. What can I do to reduce the swelling? Would cold compresses or caffeine gels/creams help?

A.D.

AskDocWeb: What you do to reduce the swelling depends on the cause of the puffiness. You could experiment with the various home remedies to find out if one of them works for you. Remember that puffy eyes my also be the first sign of fluid retention due to a medical problem such as kidney or liver disease. If the puffiness is new or significant, or if it does not improve, contact your doctor.

Subj: Is there any product?
Date: 10/13/2009
I am 56 years old and suffer with bags under the eyes but not what I would call dark circles. Is there any product on the market in the stores that is not too expensive that I could maybe try. Thanks for your help.

Arlene

AskDocWeb: Sorry Arlene, we don’t have a recommendation for you. Maybe a reader can help out with a suggestion.

An earlier writer mentioned kidney insufficiency as being a cause of dark circles under the eyes. In Chinese medicine, the dark circles may be caused by kidney deficiency, but it also might be caused by several other issues, depending upon the current condition of the subject; this may be exposure to pathogens that cause inflammation in the head, particularly the sinuses. But it might also run in the family. If you have inflammation in the area, see a doctor or alternative practitioner for consultation.

Steve

Subj: Demonologist?
Date: 11/17/2009
Consult with a demonologist? So the dark circles may be from turning into a demon?

Made me laugh

AskDocWeb: That was a joke from our assistant nurse. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

I’ve had allergies and dark dark circles for as long as I can remember. Under eye makeup is a daily ritual for me. I found that UnderEyeBryten works pretty well for me. It lightened my dark circles significantly. I’ve gone from using tattoo coverup to normal foundation under my eyes. It’s not too expensive and sometimes TJ Maxx carries it at half price. I notice a difference if I skip a day or two. The circles are not completely gone but look much better and are easier to cover with less makeup.
