Subj: Tested positive for THC
Date: 3/12/2007
My friend has never done any drugs but recently has been ill, has taken ibuprofen, Aleve, Nyquil, b2 vitamin, amoxicillan, Zithromax, Excedrin, Tylenol, dimetapp…and showed positive for THC? Should he be concerned? What can you do to prove to your employer you don’t do drugs?
Vicky
AskDocWeb: If he gets a GC/MS confirmation test, that will show that the results of the urine test were due to false positives.
Subj: Orajell?
Date: 3/13/2007
Can benzocaine cause a false positive and if so how much would you have to have taken Orajell?
JACKIE
AskDocWeb: There are no reports of false positives with benzocaine.
Subj: “ephedra free”
Date: 3/13/2007
Can dietary supplements that are “ephedra free” (containing synephrine, caffeine) or other similar types of products cause false positives for cocaine?
Tina
AskDocWeb: Just because the product is ephedra free does not mean that it is safe. It could have another ingredient in it that could cause a false positive so please check the listed ingredients.
Subj: Diphenhydramine
Date: 3/14/2007
I agreed to give my mom a drug test to get her off my back. I told her to go to Walgreen’s to get the test. I was the ONE who wanted it to clear my name. I have told her of past fun with Opiates. Well, I was in for a HUGE let down. The test came back positive for Methadone, and Trycilic? anti something or other… I denied it but was not believed.. I have never in my life taken Methadone, and one time YEARS ago was given the drug amitryptaline (don’t know the spelling) I was wondering if Diphenhydramine could be the cause of a false positive for either. It’s the only drug I regularly take. I have been clean for over 6 months. I’m am totally shocked at the test results and would LOVE to clear my name.. Can you help me PLEASE! Thanks,
Robert
AskDocWeb: The drug Diphenhydramine hasn’t been reported to cause a false positive.
Subj: Who’s who in this field?
Date: 3/14/2007
I recently tested positive for cocaine. It was a federal test and I have absolutely no recollection of ingesting such substance. I am awaiting the secondary lab results but am still rather confused as to how this came about since its been years since I saw the stuff. Of course I was dismissed and will appeal but am in limbo right now since I do not know who’s who in this field. Any help appreciated.
Dee
AskDocWeb: If you go to court, you need an expert witness, someone who can provide unbiased and accurate information in a way that a jury can understand. In this case an expert witness is a qualified forensic toxicologist who can perform an independent review of the data. A forensic toxicologist can evaluate the data, procedures, and records to interpret the test results.
When selecting your expert witness, ask for a résumé and determine if the expert’s qualifications are adequate for your purpose. Some of the things to look for in an expert witness are:
- Experience in a lab performing the analyses in question
- Education that directly relates to the issue in question
- Membership in relevant professional organizations
- The number of times the expert has been qualified in court, and in which field
- Experience using the analytical instruments involved in the analyses, interpreting the results
- publications in a peer-reviewed journal, and special qualifications or honors
It is vital to your case to get someone that can effectively communicate. Evaluate whether your expert witness can express an opinion that is easily understood by the jury.
Subj: False positive from battling the flu
Date: 3/14/2007
I recently had a false positive showing that I had THC and a positive reading for PCP. I have never taken any of these drugs in my life. I have in the past few days taken over-the-counter cold medicines in battling the flu. These medications were NyquilPM, Theraflu, Aleeve and Ibuprofen. I also take prescription sleep medication Ambien CR and Rozerm. Would any of the medications or combinations result in a positive reading for PCP and marijuana?
Allen
AskDocWeb: Absolutely! If you are required to take drug screen tests, you must not use over the counter cold medicine. Some companies provide employees with a list of products to avoid before taking a drug test. We’ve heard that Wal-Mart is doing this now.
Subj: Zantac
Date: 3/14/2007
I have a friend who takes Zantac and he is worried about it causing a false-positive test result on a urinalysis. I’ve heard rumors of this happening, is it true?
T
AskDocWeb: Zantac has been reported to cause false positives for Amphetamines.
Subj: Tryptophan
Date: 3/15/2007
Wondering if there was a specific list of medications or foods (eggs, cottage cheese, etc) that could cause a false positive for benzodiazepine in urine. I read something about Tryptophan increasing serotin and that it should not be combined with things like Lexapro. ANY information you could give me would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank YOU SO MUCH,
-Kyle
AskDocWeb: Tryptophan is an amino acid precursor to serotonin and high levels of tryptophan increase serotonin synthesis or put another way, Serotonin release varies with the level of tryptophan in the brain. These occur naturally within your body. If you are considering a using a supplement with your prescription drug then we suggest you talk to your doctor first.
Subj: Weight loss?
Date: 3/15/2007
Can weight loss produce a false positive for THC? When I became pregnant I stopped smoking which has been about 3 years ago. After I gave birth I breast-fed my daughter. She is now 2 and starting to wean but, I am concerned is THC still in my body trapped in fatty cells from 3 years back? Can the weight loss produce a false positive test?
Cita
AskDocWeb: No.
Subj: Botox
Date: 3/15/2007
Will Botox show up in a test under Benzodiazepine? I’ve had it twice right after a treatment for migraines, and from there after, the line will always come up faint until my next treatment, about every 3 months. To me it only makes sense because Botox will “paralyze” muscle, and Benzo’s will “relax” muscles. Please help!
Libby
AskDocWeb: No it won’t, Botox is a neuro toxin.
Subj: Broken arm
Date: 3/18/2007
I recently broke my arm. I took a combination of 15mg morphine pills, 50 mg ultram, vicodin, ibuprofen, tylenol, and aleve (not all at the same time, but over the course of 5 days). I also take synthroid, glucophage and celexa on a daily basis. After suffering severe muscle spasms, I tested positive for cocain at the hospital. I DO NOT use cocain. What could cause this.
Shannon
AskDocWeb: Any one (or more) of the following drugs you took could have caused the problem; Morphine, Aleve, ibuprofen, and Tylenol.
Subj: False positive for cocaine
Date: 3/19/2007
My wife and I are fighting to get our son back from DCF, my wife is bi-polor, manic depression, and has anxiety, her syc. has heron zan-x, zoloft, seroquel, and elavil. The problem is we have to do random drug screens in order to get our son back. I test negative but she comes up positive all the time for cocaine, and we don’t do drugs. Someone at poison control spent about an hour on the phone with my wife trying to figure out what would cause her to test positive for cocaine on the drug test. Poison control found something on Seroquel and Elavil that could cause a false positive for cocaine, our case worker called poison control and they said it wouldn’t, but didn’t have time to look it up. please help us figure out what could be causing this. (ASAP) if possible, time is running out on getting our son back… thank you,
Dee
AskDocWeb: We have heard that Elavil can cause a false positive for opiates for up to three days after taking it.
Subj: Tested positive for methadone
Date: 3/21/2007
I have been on probation for a few months now and was tested positive for methadone. I have never taken this drug before my entire life. I have no clue what medications I could be taken or anything I could be eating that could cause me to test positive for methadone. Please help my mind is boggled and I don’t know what else to do. The medications I take are topral xl and rythamol for my heart. And I occasionally take ibuoprofen. I couldn’t even take methadone if I wanted to because of my heart so how could this be getting in my system? Please help! Thank you,
Nate
AskDocWeb: You need a GC/MS test to confirm if it is really in your system or just a false positive. Be sure to tell the people conducting the test about any drugs you have taken, including over-the-counter ones like Ibuprofen.
Subj: Test for benzodiazepines
Date: 3/22/2007
I had a false positive urine test for benzodiazepines, which I’ve never taken. I do take Zanaflex St. John’s wart and valerean root is it possible this caused the false positive test?
Renee
AskDocWeb: Yes, valerian root and its extract has shown up as false positives for benzodiazepines (Reference 36).
