Subj: Tested positive
Date: 12/14/2010
I donated plasma prior to a drug test and I am still trying to understand how I tested positive. I do not use illegal drugs. The only thing I take is a 10mg prescription of Celexa each day. Could the plasma donation cause the positive test?
Pat
AskDocWeb: Donating plasma has no known effect on the results of urine testing for drugs of abuse.
Subj: Tested positive for PCP
Date: 12/15/2010
My 14 year old daughter was given a drug test yesterday and tested positive for PCP. I totally know she doesnt do drugs. She is currently on Effxor, abilify, medadate cd for adhd and vistral for sleep and melotonin over the counter for sleep. can any of these drugs have a possible positive effect for PCP? Please my daughter is already in some trouble i need to know. thank you,
Debra
AskDocWeb: Only one of her meds, the Effexor (venlafaxine hydrochloride) has shown up in urine drug tests as a false positive for PCP (References 27 and 33), but that is enough to cause more trouble. Fortunately the GC/MS confirmation test can tell the difference between Effexor and PCP so it can eliminate that possibility.
Subj: Positive for cocaine
Date: 12/16/2010
i tested positive for cocaine at my Suboxone doctor and i have never taken it before. I was addicted to heroin and oxy’s and went to the suboxone rehabilitation treatment center for over a year now. The doc is retiring in 2 weeks and is trying to get people kicked out so she doesn’t have to deal with them anymore after she leaves but promised to continue to see her patients well I have never failed a drug test before and wouldn’t why? for a upper that has no buzz hell no. I haven’t touched any kind of drug in over 9 months relapsed 1 time but not on cocaine and she said i failed for it along with 3 other people in the treatment. She said it may be a false positive. How it don’t make any since what do i do if i took the same test same day at emergency room and was negative? But at the doctors i was positive for something i never did? Please could use all your information.
Natasha
AskDocWeb: Have you checked the policies and procedures of your treatment center with the head person there? That may have a small chance of helping but still worth a try. You might also try getting a confirmation test to prove a false positive.

I have been a part of an intensive Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) Program and am required to take a urine test every week. I stopped smoking marijuana a month ago, when I started to program, and have tested positive twice so far, including today, which I am very upset about because I have not touched it in four weeks and I’ve been talking about how good it feels to have a clear head! If results are positive again I will be discharged from the program. I am currently taking 25mlg of Topiramate (Generic for Topamax) daily. Could this have caused a false positive? What else could have?
Caitlin
AskDocWeb: Topiramate has not shown up in the research on false positives but there are other possibilities.
Subj: D.O.T. DRUG TESTING
Date: 12/16/2010
I am about to start taking effexor xr again. I have been off of it for a year. I am a truck driver and am subject to D.O.T. DRUG TESTING AT ANY TIME. I heard that this drug can cause a false positive for pcp. Is this generally the case on quick or on site tests because all my testing is done in a lab. The previous 9 years that I have taken this drug I have been tested at least a dozen times and never had a positive result. I am reluctant to start this drug again because of the chances of a false positive. As per federal law all my urine specimens are split meaning that I give 2 samples each sealed in a seperate container. Like I said all my specimens go to a lab to be analyzed should I be concerned about a false positive?
Chris
AskDocWeb: Since only certified laboratories can perform D.O.T. drug testing, the chances of problems is greatly reduced. According to the D.O.T. website it looks like all non-negative (positives) results have to be verified, if so then you should be okay.
Subj: Hair follicle test
Date: 12/18/2010
When I found your report on False Negative drug testing, the information you provided literally brought tears to my eyes. My 20 month old son had to take a hair follicle test for HHS and the results came back that he had ingested high doses of cocaine!! And I’ve been sitting here scrambling my brain the past 3 weeks knowing there was absolutely no possible way for that to be true. As I was reading down your list, low and behold it says amoxicillan and antibiotics can cause false positive for cocaine!! Which explained why the results would have came back that he INGESTED HIGH AMOUNTS of cocaine because he has been on antibiotics because of an ear infection due to the fluid in his ears not draining correctly….such as sulfamethoxazole w/tmp susphit (the one he is currently taking) and he takes 1 & 1/2 teaspoon a night. I still have to prove this in court of course, but me as a mother now am at ease in my mind because I knew in my heart there had to be some kind of a mistak e. So now my question is… I need to get him re-tested to assure he is still showing up positive for cocaine (because of the antibiotics) in a simple dr office visit test but now my question is… what labs are available that can determine the antibiotics my son is on is indeed what caused cocaine to show up in his hair test…?? This is so important for me as a mother to know and prove just for my own ease, let alone the court system. Thankyou all!!!!
Cassie
AskDocWeb: Sorry to hear about your trouble Cassie but that list is specifically for urine drug testing. It does NOT apply to hair testing.
Subj: Positive for methamphetamines
Date: 12/19/2010
I went to my pain clinic doctor the other day I was given a drug test it came up positive for methamphetamines. I have never taken them let alone know what they are. I am taking oxycodone and oxycontin for pain. What could have caused this? I drank alkaseltzer that morning and the night before for heartburn and tums also and that is all. Can you give me an answer?
Gordon
AskDocWeb: Alka-Seltzer has shown up as a false positive for amphetamines (references 2 and 7). Note that some of the cheap urine tests do not make a distinction between amphetamines and methamphetamines. We are not saying that that is true in your case, just that it is one possibility. If your test result was a false positive then getting a confirmation test will show that.

Subj: Sudafed?
Date: 12/20/2010
I have recently suspected my husband is snorting herion, I called his probation officer to tell them because I am concerned, now all of a sudden he has been taking sudafed? Is that to hide the herion in his system?
Amy
AskDocWeb: It is possible to attempt that but with the confirmation test, there is no way to get away with it.
Subj: Hepatitis C
Date: 12/20/2010
I am trying to find out if having hepC is causing me to have a false positive for benzo’s in my urine.
Elizabeth
AskDocWeb: If you are getting a false positive on a urine drug test, the only way to be sure it is a false positive is to get a confirmation test.
Subj: False test for cocaine
Date: 12/20/2010
I am getting false test for cocaine and I have diabetes and taking glipizide and metformin. I do not take drug at all.
Wanda
Subj: Tested positive for 4 out of 5
Date: 12/21/2010
My friend had surgery yesterday afternoon for a hernia, this morning he was called to drop for probation and tested positive for 4 out of 5 of the tests. ( all but THC ) including cocaine. Is this possible? I should mention that he has a pain pump as well.
Janice
AskDocWeb: If it happened then it is possible. It is common practice to administer drugs for surgery. That plus the pain pump could add up to 4 out of 5 on the urine test however, a confirmation test should be able to sort it out.
Subj: Celexa?
Date: 12/21/2010
Ironically I was reading on false-positives for opiates in regards to a recent test I gave a probationer, who claims not to be taking any opiates. When we reviewed her medications, she had taken Delsym earlier which I though might have been the false-positive trigger, however, she also is taking Celexa. I saw that another one of your inquiries mentioned Celexa and a false positive for opiates. Could this actually be a false-positive trigger?
Nicole
AskDocWeb: While there are a few antidotal reports of that happening we have yet to find any documentation to back up that assertion.
Subj: Positive for TCA?
Date: 12/21/2010
I just tested myself with a reditest. It said I was positive for TCA, I don’t even know what that is. I take Unisom to sleep, could this have caused this?
Leah
AskDocWeb: TCA refers to Tricyclic Antidepressants. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics the following can cause a false positive for TCAs.
- Carbamazepine
- Chlorpromazine
- Cyclobenzaprine
- Cyproheptadine
- Diphenhydramine
- Norcyclobenzaprine
- Perphenazine
- Thioridazine
- Trimeprazine
The active ingredient in Unisom may be one of two drugs, depending on the type of preparation; doxylamine succinate or diphenhydramine hydrochloride. It is the latter drug that may have caused the positive for TCA.
