Subj: False positive for THC?
Date: 12/22/2010
If I took 2 Pamprins at 8PM, 2AM and 8AM can that make you test positive for THC at a high level? That is the only thing I can think of that would cause a false positive for THC. Please help! I don’t and never have done any drugs other than over the counter and those a doctor prescribed.

Amanda

AskDocWeb: We found three references (3, 18, and 20) that say Pamprin may show up as a false positive for THC.

Subj: Advair with albuterol?
Date: 12/23/2010
Can advair used with albuterol cause a false positive for amphetamines or meth in a urine test?

Shannon

AskDocWeb: Some inhalers have shown up as false positives on urine drug tests but the only ones specifically named so far are Combivent, Afrin, and Vicks. Advair and albuterol have not been reported to cause a false positive on a urine drug test.

Subj: Saliva test
Date: 12/28/2010
I tested positive for Cocaine with an oral saliva test. The one that you hold under your tongue for 10 minutes. Here is a list of medication I take. Lexapro Wellbutrin Lamictal Ritalin Oxycodone Ultram Alprazolam Soma. Is there any way these drugs can cause a test result to be positive for Cocaine??

Krista

AskDocWeb: Sorry Krista, the information here applies only to urine drug testing. We don’ have the funds to research other types of false positives.

Subj: Tested positive for THC
Date: 12/31/2010
Recently tested positive for THC (pot) haven’t smoked or been around anyone who has, sample was sent to lab – can the lab determine why it came back as false positive. There is NOWAY I could have failed a drug test – very clean. HELP

Valerie

AskDocWeb: The lab is not designed to reveal “why” a particular test result was a false positive. The purpose of testing at an outside lab is to confirm or deny if a substance is really present in the sample or not. If the confirmation test does not show THC then your original test result is proven to be a false positive.

Subj: Tested positive for cocaine
Date: 1/2/2011
I recently tested positive for cocaine on a urine test at my pain management center. I currently take percocet, morphine, trileptal, baclofen, pristiq, levothyroxine, buspar, Xanax, seroquel, and lunesta per prescription everyday. In the day of the urine analysis I had a really bad cold and had been taking amoxicillin from a prescription that my fiancĂ© had left over from when she had the same nasty cold. The next time I went in the doc told me that I had tested positive for cocaine but I had not done cocaine. I have done cocaine in the past but not at that time. I assume they sent it out to a lab because she told me that my morphine levels were high….. If the amoxicillin had caused a false positive wouldnt the lab have been able to confirm that???? Or is it possible that they could have gotten a false positive as well??? Thanks!!!

Kyle

AskDocWeb: When it comes to drug testing, be careful of your assumptions. If they sent your sample out to an independent lab for confirmation, that test will eliminate the false positives.

Subj: Question about a false positive
Date: 1/3/2011
Hi, I have a question about a false positive on a drug screen actually two drug screens as of now…Well I take suboxene and to have it prescribed to me I have to pass a drug though drug test every week, but for some unknown reason to me I keep testing positive for oxycodone when I haven’t taken NO FORM OF ANY pain pills what so ever in over two months now, but I am taking abilify 10mg, zoloft 100mg, and ambien 10mg, once a day for severe panic attacks and anxiety…I just wanted to know any of these meds taken with suboxene could cause a false positive result for oxycodone?

I’ve asked my doctor and he just tunes me out, basically ignores… I’ve told him to please send it to a lab to be further evauluated and he says he’s not going to do that cause it would cost about $300…even after I told him that, that would be fine with me…so what I should i do and how do i find out why I keep testing positive for something that I AM NOT Consuming??? Please let me know, espically if this could be a result of the mixture of my meds… Thank You,

Amy

AskDocWeb: Telling your doctor that it would be fine with you if he sent it out for a confirmation test is NOT the same thing as telling him that you will pay for the additional testing. If you tell him that you believe the result was a false positive and that you are willing to pay to prove it, he is a lot more likely to believe you are serious.

Subj: Tested positive for meth
Date: 1/3/2011
My husband is on probation for DUI and just tested positive for meth. He never has used meth. He has been clean from alcohol for 3 months. He takes lithium for bipolar and citalopram for depression. We cannot figure out why he tested positive for a drug he has never done. His PO said that sometimes the tests are false positive. We are concerned. What if this happens again?

Patty

AskDocWeb: You may want to get a GC/MS confirmation test in order to dispel any doubt. That additional testing is designed to remove all false positives.

Subj: Fat burner from GNC
Date: 1/3/2011
I am taking a fat burner from GNC will it make me test positive for a drug.

William

AskDocWeb: You may want to check your fat burner (GNC sells several) for Neosynephrine, which has been reported to show up as a false positive for Amphetamines (Ref: 3, 18, 26).
