Subj: Urine test?
Date: 2/24/2011
Can you tell me if taking Nexium will show up on a urine test as Darvacet? I took Darvacet years ago for an abcessed tooth and had an allergic reaction to it and haven’t taken it since. I was told it could along with Protonix, Prilesec and Prevacid.

Beth

AskDocWeb: No, neither Nexium nor any of the other PPIs have been reported to show up on urine tests.

Subj: Saliva test
Date: 2/24/2011
Will nightquil come back as a false positive with a slyva test for methadone.

Doug

AskDocWeb: Sorry Doug, this forum only deals with urine drug testing.

Subj: Pre employment drug screen
Date: 2/25/2011
I had a drug screen done on Thursday Feb 24 for pre employment, I tested positive for opiates, pcp, marijuana, I am on prescription tylenol 3 and naproxen 500mg, and every 3 to 4 months I get a prednisone injection for my lupus, I have never taken street drugs, I also drank a can of red bull drink the night before, why did I have a false positive?

Patricia

AskDocWeb: According to Doctor Spiller (Reference 20), Tylenol 3 may cause a positive result for opiates. There are several sources (1, 3, 16, and 21) that say Naproxen (Aleve) may test false positive for THC or Marijuana. We don’t know about the PCP but a confirmation test by gas chromatography or mass spectroscopy would eliminate all the false positives.

Subj: Rerunning the test
Date: 2/26/2011
My wife came up positive for amphetamines on a drug test. She swears she had taken nothing except maybe sudafed….she was sick and may have taken another cold tablet. Also, after more thought she remembered taking ENERGY NOW tablets, both the Ginseng and Ultra kind. Can you please tell me if these could cause the false positive…they are rerunning the test to see if it was sudafed, my concern is that it will not show it as sudafed, but still show positive because of those energy pills….I believe my wife, but now the doctor thinks she is a meth head. Please help

John

AskDocWeb: It is important to make a distinction between rerunning the test and doing a confirmation test. Simply running the test again may produce the same result whereas a confirmation test will eliminate the false positives, which by the way, may be the only way you can change your doctor’s opinion of your wife. The energy pills are still an unknown as we have yet to tackle that area. You might check this list to see if any of the ingredients might be showing up on her drug test.

Please note that there are also health concerns with using Ginseng.

Subj: Fighting a custody battle
Date: 2/28/2011
My daughter is fighting a custody battle. All of her drug tests have been negative. Her recent nail test however showed positive for cocaine. She has not used cocaine but was on Amoxicillen. Any information would be greatly appreciated!!!!! My Grandchildren lives depend on this!!!!

Ann

AskDocWeb: There are several sources that say amoxicillin has tested positive for cocaine on urine drug tests but we haven’t researched the nail tests yet. However, if there is a possibility that the test result is a false positive then getting a GC/MS confirmation test would eliminate the false positives as well as any doubt about drug abuse.

Subj: Positive for morphine
Date: 2/28/2011
Hello, I hope you can help me. I had taken percocets for two years and then took suboxone to stop for 1 1/2 years. My doctor took me off the soboxone February 12th. I’ve taken 2 urine tests for probation and they came up clean now they just informed me my third urine test just came back positive for morphine at 150…. I’m very confused, I have taken nothing since stopping suboxone and cannot figure out why this happened. I did take advil pm and I know that wouldn’t do it. What could of caused this?

Cari

AskDocWeb: Unfortunately there are many over-the-counter medications that have tested positive for morphine; inhalers, cough syrup, cold meds, nasal sprays, allergy meds, sinus meds, muscle relaxers, and sleep aids. And then there are poppy seeds, the ones you often find on bread, poppy seeds contain morphine.

Subj: Positive for PCP
Date: 3/1/2011
A few months ago my doctor had put me on plavix due to having vertago, I also am taking triliptal and limictal for years for seizures. I went for a drug test and for the 1st time in my life failed the test. It had came up positive for PCP. Did the new med. plavix cause the failure on the test? I’m trying to find out why. I also dont touch any drug unless the doctor says to take it. Thanks for your time.

Roger

AskDocWeb: So far there are only five products that have been reported to show up on a urine drug test as a false positive for PCP; Benadryl (Diphenhydramine), Diazepam, Effexor Tablets (venlafaxine hydrochloride), Ketamine, and Tylenol Simply Sleeps (Diphenhydramine). Fortunately a GC/MS confirmation test on the original sample will eliminate any false positives.

Subj: False negative on a pregnancy test?
Date: 3/2/2011
I recently went to the Dentist for an abscessed tooth and was prescribed 500mg of Keflex and 7.5mg of Lortab. I was wondering if either of these could cause me to miss my menstrual cycle or cause a false negative on a pregnancy test. I am almost 9 days late and the test is negative. I’ve been petty regular for the past 3 years so this worries me.

Michelle

AskDocWeb: It is possible to get a false negative with an at home pregnancy test. The test is looking for a hormone that only appears when a woman is pregnant. However, if the hormone isn’t in the urine sample, then you get a negative reading. Hormone levels (hCG) are highest in the morning so you’ll have the best chance of getting an accurate reading if you test when first wake up. The only way to know for sure is to get a blood test from your doctor.

Subj: Afrin on a 10-panel urine test
Date: 3/2/2011
I used Afrin and tested positive for meth. I couldn’t believe it, as I’ve never done meth in my life. I paid to have the specimen sent to a lab and am hoping it confirms that this was a false positive. This was a 10-panel urine test that was used, and I had taken the Afrin the day before. Buyer beware!
