Subj: Positive for Amphetamine and Methamphetamine
Date: 3/4/2011
My son took a GC/MS drug test and came back positive for Amphetamine 777 ng/ml and on the next line it show Methamphetamine 1831 ng/ml but on the report it dosn’t so postive it just list the ng/ml. When I ask him about it He said that he is clean. I ask him what he had been taken because I knew that he had been sick. Theraflu, Mucinex, Nyquil-Nighttime, Bronkaid & Dimetapp. Can you tell me if this type of test would show if it was a street drug he could of taken or could it be what he had been taken for the flu. I want to believe him but I just don’t know alot about drugs and how the drug test work. Help me! Thanks,

Debbie

AskDocWeb: Hi Debbie. Of course you want to believe him but the GC/MS test does not support his story, especially since it shows both amphetamine and methamphetamine in his system. The GC/MS confirmation test is 99.9% accurate and none of the products he took would show up as a false positive on a GC/MS drug test.

Subj: Old fat cells releasing THC?
Date: 3/4/2011
Hello, I have just dropped 25 pounds in 40 days via the HCG diet. I also used to be a regular marijuana user. I have been clean for 42 days, with limited use the week before quitting. I have been showing positive for THC on tests. Is there any medical evidence supporting the breakdown of old fat cells releasing THC back into the body? Thank you so much for your help.

Tony

AskDocWeb: The only reference we have seen is from the Walter J. Freeman Neurophysiology Lab website at the University of California at Berkeley. The following quote comes from a term paper on Marijuana:
“THC is fat-soluble and gets stored in the fat cells. Since fat cells secrete THC metabolites over an extended period of time, cleaning out the body from this substance is difficult.”

Subj: Meth in my system
Date: 3/4/2011
I am on probation and have to take random drug test, i keep coming up with meth in my system, i dont even know what this is, I am on these meds, asprin, buspirone, citalopram, cyanocobalamin, cyclobenzaprine, ferrous sulfate, flucinonide, hctz 25/lisinopril, folic acid, calcium, b12, mupirocin calcium, pantoprazole, quetiapine fumarate, ranitidine, sodium floride, terbinafine, trazodone, amoxicillin, do you know why i keep showing up for this drug that i have never did, period.

Joseph

AskDocWeb: The only drugs on your list that are on ours are the quetiapine (Seroquel), trazodone, and ranitidine but those have not produced false positives for meth. Since you are taking so many medications you will likely need to get a GC/MS test to sort it out.

Subj: Positive for benzos?
Date: 3/4/2011
I just did a urine test and tested postitive for benzos??? I take Trazadone, Prozac, and Meoprolol. I also took Librium about 4 weeks ago. Thanks,

Kathy…

AskDocWeb: It is likely to be the Librium. According to Clinical Pharmacology, it has a half-life of up to 30 hours. Unfortunately the half-lives of its metabolites range up to 100 hours. The active metabolites of Librium are excreted in the urine, but the elimination is slow and the metabolites can still be present in the blood for several weeks after discontinuing the drug.

Subj: Drug test coming up
Date: 3/5/2011

Ernie

AskDocWeb: No.

Subj: Tested positive for cocaine
Date: 3/6/2011
My wife’s urine tested positive for cocaine today & her white blood cell count were elevated? The only change to her diet was her taking child vitamin’s with Zinc & Echinacea for immune support. She sleeps all day, rarely eats right, & is treated for her sever bi-polar disorder. Is this a common false positive for urine samples? How closely related are Echinacea & the coca bush Erythroxylon?

RJH

AskDocWeb: False positives for cocaine are not common. Echinacea” is just a flower, also known as the Purple Coneflower. However, the Erythroxylon is a bush – not even close. Take a look:

Purple Cone Flower  Cocabush plant

                        Echinacea purpurea       Coca Bush Erythroxylon

Subj: Positive for cocaine
Date: 3/7/2011
I TESTED POSSITIVE FOR COCAINE AN TAKE ACETAMINOPHEN AN AMOXICILLIN SULFAMETH CAN THEY CAUSE FALSE TEST.

Antonio

AskDocWeb: There are several sources that say Amoxicillin may show up as a false positive for cocaine ( 13, 16, 18, 20, 21, 26, and 29).

Subj: False positive for marijuana?
Date: 3/8/2011
Diabetes. I read your analysis of how ketones in a diabetic patient may produce false positives for alcohol, but what about marijuana? I’m currently on probation and have never smoked marijuana. However, last week, my P.O. informed me that my last UA came back positive for marijuana. How can this be? In addition to being diabteic, I was born with only one kidney, and I often spill protein in my urine. Could either of these conditions produce a false positive for marijuana and how so? I asked my pcp about this and he said he was totally unaware of any substance that would produce false positives for marijuana other than the drug itself. I feel like everyone thinks I’m lying, but I don’t smoke weed! What can I do?

David

AskDocWeb: Diabetes has been reported to cause false positives for THC but we don’t know the pharmacology behind that. In any case, when you are on probation, getting a GC/MS confirmation test is the only way to convince your probation officer that it is a false positive.

Subj: Positive for benzodiazepines
Date: 3/8/2011
i was taking topamax ultram flexarile vicodin and percocet at the time I tested postive for “benzodiazapenes” I know that there was no possible way I had taken it. I am so very confused and I am in disparate need of an answer. please contact me and let me know if this could result in a false positive. in addition to that medication list.. prior to that I was taking “eliville and prozac” and had recently stopped taking it.. a few weeks later I tested positive. The only other thing that I can think of could be a previous history of substance abuse related to crack cocain. I read online that long term use of crack cocain could raise dopameine levels in the brain and effect the neurons of the brain. I have done long research to get answers and I am very disparate. in addition to that ..after failing a second drug test for benzodiapenes… I had made sure after the first one that I did not leave my drink unattended.. and didnt even eat the food at my house for fear of someone poisoning me. its been almost a year and I just need to know what could be causing me to fail these drug test. I understand you probialy get alot of emails related… however this is for me to have closure..as the stress effects me phsycologiclly for this “mysterious circumstance”…I just need to know “why do I test possitive for benzodiazapenes when I do not take them.. or any medications that contain them” it is much appreciated and I thank you for your time.

Susan

AskDocWeb: Sorry Susan, none of the drugs you are taking have been reported to cause a false positive for benzodiazepines. If your drug test result really is a false positive then getting a confirmation test will prove that.
