Subj: I dont want this in my medical records!
Date: 4/20/2011
I take Suboxen, Prozac and Klonopin and had recently taken a xanax a week or so before my test. I had a false positive for Nordiazepam, Temazepam, and Oxazepam. My Dr. has now let me go as a patient for this. My dr said it was valium when i questioned her about what it was which i have never taken! I have taken stool softener and tylenol also but wouldnt think that would have caused a false positive. Any Suggestions?? Please help..I dont want this in my medical records.
Bella
AskDocWeb: The only way that we know of to clear your medical records is to subject the original sample to a confirmation test using either a Gas Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometer (GC/MS) or high-performance liquid chromatography. That may be pretty difficult once a doctor has dismissed you as a patient. The laws that apply to this vary from one state to the next so check with your state medical society or board. If you don’t know who to call, start with your state Attorney General’s office.
Subj: How do I fight this?
Date: 4/21/2011
I tested positive for marijuana and xanax how is this possible and I dont use drugs at all and how do I fight this???
Chauncey
AskDocWeb: Typically that involves getting a confirmation test to show that the drugs are not in your sample. However, the confirmation test must be performed on the original sample by an independent laboratory.
Subj: Employment drug test
Date: 4/21/2011
Hello, I have a Urine test coming up for employment and I have been taking Tramadol every now and then for my back when it really acts up. I would say I take one, sometimes two 50 mg Tramadols every 2 days or so. My question is, will this make my urine test positive?
Sarah
AskDocWeb: Employment drug tests typically do not test for Ultram.
Subj: Tested positive for vicodin
Date: 4/21/2011
My mom has been on percocet for many years for pain management. Along with other prescribed medications. She recently had a urine test and it tested positive for vicodin. She has never taken that painkiller before. Now her doctor will not prescribe her the percocet due to this result. We are awaiting results from another urine test. Is there any known medications/reasons that would cause vicodin to show up in your test results without using the drug?
Rose
AskDocWeb: There is no medication that we are aware of that would show up as vicodin on a urine drug screen.
Subj: About liver or kidney problems
Date: 4/21/2011
I’ve heard a lot about liver or kidney problems throwing off drug tests, but I can find little information outside of those claims. A good friend of mine has been having medical issues (a doctor just informed him that he suspects some kind of liver ailment going on with him) and he keeps showing up positive for morphine in urine tests but he strongly denies using (and there is no reason to doubt him). Any references would be much appreciated. I’ve also just read the the human body can produce morphine?
William
AskDocWeb: In researching your answer we found that the NYU Langone Medical Center has removed their page that had information about liver disease causing false positives on drug tests. That is understandable but it is a shame that those with liver disease no longer have access to that data. There are a couple of other references you might take a look at: an OB/GYN forum and a Massachusetts dentist, Martin S. Spiller, D.M.D..
Subj: I still got terminated
Date: 4/22/2011
I am prescibed klonopin and restoril by my physician and had a urine screen done for my employer UPMC of Pittsburgh and the test came back positive for valium. After sending all of the information I found on the on the internet stating it is almost impossible to tell the difference, I still got terminated.

“False Positives What is a false positive? It is a test result that is returned when a substance tests positive for another compound. It is a case of mistaken identity. For example if you eat a couple poppy seed cakes before testing, you can get a positive result for opiates. The chances of you getting a false positive depends on the quality of the laboratory that does the testing. There seems to be about 1,200 of these labs in the United States currently testing for drugs. Less than a 100 of these meet federal standards and most of the individual states do not regulate drug test labs. The number of false positives returned range from 4% to over 50%, depending on the lab. A concern here is that, if your company tests for drug usage, they are probably not required to use a certified drug testing lab, which means you have a greater chance of getting a false positive. Listed below are products reported to cause a false positive drug test result on a urine drug test. With your help, this will grow into a comprehensive list. Note that this list does NOT apply to those tests that are confirmed by GC/MS testing. Last updated, April 20, 2010. ”
ALOT OF YOUR REFERENCE URLS DO NOT WORK ANYMORE AND THAT MOST ERTAINLY NULLIFIES YOUR CLAIMS ON A LOT OF CASES. WE NEED LEGIT ANSWERS THIS IS JAIL OR FREEDOM FOR SOME PEOPLE SO KEEP IT LEGIT. I HAVE BEEN HAVING BENZOS COME UP ON TWO DRUG TESTS BACK TO BACK AND HAVE NOT TAKEN ANY PILLS OTHER THAN ALLERGY MEDICATIONS AND ENERGY SUPPLEMENTS TO COUNTER THE DROWSINESS. I HAVE ALSO BEEN SMOKING CLOUD 10 AND INCENSE SOLD IN THE MALL IN MY TOWN. MY FIRST REACTION WAS IT MUST BE SOMETHING IN THE FAKE POT BUT I KNOW PLENTY OF PEOPLE WHO ARENT GETTING FALSE POSITIVES. I NEED SOME ANSWERSSSS PLEASE MY PO IS MAKING ME TEST WEEKLY NOW
ALEX
AskDocWeb: Okay Alex, thanks for the motivation to update the references. That should be done sometimes next week.
Subj: Positive for Marijuana
Date: 4/23/2011
My husband who has never done any drugs in his life was recently hospitalized. His urine came back positive (50) for Marijuana. He had them repeat the urine test because he knew it had to be wrong. It came back positive again (same day). He drinks Monster Lo-Carb drinks and also takes GNC supplements (not sure of the particular names) for weight lifting. Any ideas that might have caused the false positives? He is beside himself because he is a truckdriver and his license could be in jeopardy.
Laura
AskDocWeb: There are quite a few possible causes on the list. It is important to get a confirmation test in order to show that the result of his urine test was a false positive. That should ease his mind. However, he might consider getting a physical because liver disease and diabetes have both caused false positives for marijuana on urine drug screens.
Other possible causes include Advil, Anaprox, Ansaid, Apo-Naproxen, Atripla, Bayer Select Pain Relief Formula, Clinoril, Cramp End Tablets, Datril, Dolobid, Dronabinol (Marinol), Edecrin, Efavirenz, Efavirenz, Excedrin IB, Feldene, Flurbiprofen, Genpril, Haltran, Ibuprin, Ibuprofen, Ifenoprofen, Indocin, Ketoprofen, Lodine, Marinol, Meclomen, Medipren, Mediprim, Midol, Motrin, Naprosyn, Naproxen (Aleve), Navonaprox, NSAIDS, Orudis KT, Oxaprozin, Pamprin, Pantoprazole, Phenergan, Promethazine, Promethegan, Proton pump inhibitors, Protonix, Rufin, Shampoo containing hemp, Sustiva (Efanirenz), Sustiva, Tanning lotion containing hemp, Trendar Cramp Relief Formula, mega doses of Vitamin B2, Voltaren, and hempseed oil.
Subj: Positive for oxazepam
Date: 4/25/2011
I am having a major problem. I recently did a urine drug screen & it came back positive for oxazepam. I have never taken this drug. My prescriptions include Celexa, Clonazepam, Ambien, Lasix, Potassium, Nexium, Levothyroxine. Could you offer me any advice or help? Thank you!
Beth
AskDocWeb: That is not too surprising since oxazepam is a benzodiazepine and Clonazepam contains benzodiazepines. Did you show your list of medications to the personnel doing the testing? You need to be prepared to show proof of the prescription, such as the medicine bottle that has your name on it.
Subj: Riboflavin
Date: 4/25/2011
i read ur review regarding riboflavin, i take 300mg of vitamin b2 will that still report as a false reading on a gc/ms?
Robert
AskDocWeb: No, the GC/MS test eliminates false positives caused by B2.
Subj: Can you test positive for THC if you do not smoke pot?
Date: 4/26/2011
Can you test positive for THC if you do not smoke pot? There are several sites that say both yes and no. The person that I am asking for takes no prescription or illegal drugs but has failed a urine test. The test person said that results were 157 nanos or something like that. I am not looking for ways to “pass” the drug test. I am looking for answers and the truth. The doctor said that nothing fives a false positive for THC other then a drug that is used for treatment for aids or leukemia. The person is about 230 lbs, takes 6+ aleve pills (i think 200 mgs.) a day, almost everyday for headaches and back pain. Ocassionally ibuprofen 800 mgs. and sinus and alergy medicine as needed. there is a history of auto immune hepititus, diabetes, sirosis of the liver in the persons family. Please help me, so I can help my friend.
Thanks,
(please do not post my name on any sites)
AskDocWeb: Yes, a urine drug test can show a positive result for THC even if a person has never used anything with THC in it. That is why the result is called a false positive. Innocent people are being labeled as drug abusers solely on the basis of a urine test that was not confirmed. If your friend gets a GC/MS confirmation test then you will know the truth. If the confirmation test doesn’t show THC in the sample then your friend is clean and that doctor is proven wrong. Otherwise, bad news for your friend.
Subj: Propofol?
Date: 4/26/2011
Are you aware of the incidence and potential causes of false positive urine test for propofol?
Pk
AskDocWeb: No, the short acting anaesthetic propofol has not shown up in the research yet. However, if you would like to share, feel free.
Subj: Minoclcline
Date: 4/26/2011
I am starting to use minoclcline and on probation I was wondering if I have to worry about false positives.
Jen
AskDocWeb: Minoclcline is a common misspelling of minocycline, the broad spectrum tetracycline antibiotic. It has not been reported to cause any problems on urine drug tests.
Subj: Pre-employment drug test
Date: 4/26/2011
I just took a pre-employment drug test. I am on wt lost medications Teuate and an over the counter dietary supplement, Rejuvenex. My oral swab came back positive for benzodiazepines. Do diet drugs show up such results?
LaToya
AskDocWeb: Diet drug are much more likely to show up as amphetamines, but not benzodiazepines.

I am currently on Methyldopa while expecting my second child..My doctor just informed me that my urine test came back positive for amphetamines. The same thing happened after I delivered my first child the hospital told me my urnine tested positive for amphetamines and I was also on Methyldopa then.. Is it possible for this to happen while on methyldopa??
Tiffany
AskDocWeb: There is only one antidotal report of Methyldopa (Aldomet) causing a false positive in drug screening tests but no documentation to back it up. The molucular structure of this drug does have many features similar in structure to an amphetamines. It appears similar enough to raise the possibility that a screening assay might pick it up as a false positive for amphetamine.
