Subj: Citalopram Hydrobromide
Date: 9/7/2011
Will Citalopram Hydrobromide give a false positive for benzo in a urine drug test?
Michael
AskDocWeb: Citalopram Hydrobromide may show up as alcohol but it has not been reported to show up as benzodiazepine.
Subj: Diclofenac sodium
Date: 9/7/2011
Will diclofenac sodium cause me to fail a pre employment drug test?
Dennis
AskDocWeb: Diclofenac sodium is a non steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to treat pain and inflammation. It has not been reported to show up on a urine drug test for drugs of abuse.
Subj: Phentramin D
Date: 9/8/2011
I have been on numerous sites and a lot if them are saying that you should not get a positive result for a urine test while using Phentramin D. Well am here to say that is false. I am currently on probation and subject to Drug testing, and 2wks into taking the diet pills I got a positive result. Now I am facing the possibility of going to jail. So beware if you have to take drug test while taking Phentramin D.
Nicole
AskDocWeb: Thanks Nicole. If you find an authoritative source that says a false positive might result from use of Phentramin D, let us know and it will be added to the list.
Subj: Could vitamin B6 and ibuprofen cause a false positive?
Date: 9/8/2011
Could B6 vitamins and ibuprofen cause a false positive? How long does it take to clear out of my system? I tale them once daily.
Lynette
AskDocWeb: The only B vitamin that has shown up on urine drug tests is vitamin B2 (Riboflavin), and that only when large doses are involved. However there are several sources that say ibuprofen has shown up as a false positive for THC or marijuana. Ibuprofen has a mean plasma half-life of about 4.5 hours and is completely eliminated by the body within 24 hours.
Subj: False positive for Cocaine?
Date: 9/10/2011
Will any of the following prescription meds cause a false positive for Cocaine; Klonopin, Oxycodone, Ambien, Tramadol, Trazadone, Prozac?
Nate
AskDocWeb: Some of those medications have tested positive for other things, benzos and amphetamines, but not cocaine.
Subj: Amphetamine salts
Date: 9/12/2011
Can amphetamine salts result in a false positive for opiates?
Ediaz
AskDocWeb: Amphetamine salts are not known to show up as opiates. Something like Adderall, which consists of a mixture of amphetamine salts would show up as an amphetamine but not opiates.
Subj: I am stunned
Date: 9/12/2011
My husband has massive seizures that require hospital stays and intubation to stop them. I won’t list all meds but his seizure meds are kepra, lamictal trileptal and klonopin. He recently underwent a 5 day IV AG series for rasmuessens encyphilitis. He was discharged and home for 4 hours, fell once (comas don) and had a seizure. He went back to the hospital to the sane room and spent another 4 days. In the 4 hours he was dismissed, he drank one glass of ice tea. His blood test after he was readmitted came back positive for THC. I’m truely confused as neither of us indulge in “weed” Can you think of anything that would cause this as I am stunned that a nurse told me he was “STONED”
Gay
AskDocWeb: None of what you list has been reported to cause a positive result for THC and we have no explanation for that. However, there is another issue here. When you think about it, do you think the term “stoned” used in a derogatory manner? Ridiculing patients and their family members is unprofessional behavior and should be reported. Hopefully you got that nurse’s name so that you could talk to your husband’s doctor about this.
Subj: Confusing, frustrating and terrified
Date: 9/13/2011
I am on probation and almost every time I get drug tested it comes back positive for methadone and anti-depressants! I HAVE NEVER EVER TAKEN METHADONE or any other drug that could possibly be mistaken for methadone!! And I am not on any anti-depressants at all!! This is soooo confusing and frustrating to me. Usually my PO will re-test me and then the test will show up negative for everything, but this past time it kept coming back positive for methadone and anti-depressants!
I am on Ativan (which is a Benzo and I have a script for it… so I am also showing up for benzos but like I said I am prescribed it so that’s fine) and I also take OTC sleeping pills (Simply Sleep by Tylenol) 2-3 pills a night! But they’re legal and doubt they contain methadone or anti-depressants! They are sending my test out to a lab to get confirmation, and I am terrified that since it’s showing up on the instant tests it’s gonna come back positive again and I am not about to get in trouble for this! PLZ HELP
Jennifer
AskDocWeb: As long as haven’t taken anything illegal you should be fine. That confirmation test is far more accurate than the instant test and it will eliminate the false positives.
Subj: Can yohimbine cause a false positive?
Date: 9/12/2011
Can yohimbine come up a false positive for anything? I test each week for house arrest.
Chris
AskDocWeb: Yohimbine is not known to cause false positive results for any drug of abuse on urine drug tests.
Subj: Testing positive for PCP?
Date: 9/13/2011
I have heard of several people testing positive for PCP because they had a “DXM” trip. Can Dextrometamorphane cause a false positive for PCP or any other substance? I am on probation and take UAs that they send out to a lab and was curious if these false positives only show up on basic UA’s.
Bryce
AskDocWeb: We have seen some discussion about the Dextromethorphan (DXM) in cough suppressants showing up as a false positive for heroin, opiates, and morphine but not PCP. So far all such false positives were limited to the basic UA’s and eliminated by the confirmation test.
Subj: False positive for Morphine?
Date: 9/13/2011
My fiancee doesn’t take any pain meds and came up positive for morphine and we were shocked he has diabetes and takes meds for that he also take celebrex and Pennsaid for a knee issue. Could either one of these caused this? Is there something that could cause a positive Morphine test?
TT
AskDocWeb: The meds you mentioned are not on the list but there are quite a few other possible causes for his positive result: 4-Way Nasal Spray, Acetaminoph w/codeine, A.P.C. w/codeine, Alka-Seltzer Plus, Allerest, Ascriptin w/codeine, Caldecon, Coffee-Break, Contac, Contac Severe Cold Formula, Control, Cremacoat, Dextromethorphan (DXM), Dietac, Dimetapp, Dristan Cough Formula, Empirin w/codeine, Fiorinal w/codeine, Hold Cough Suppressant, Naldecon, Norflex, Nyquil, Romilar, Silexin, Sinarest, Sine-Off, Sinubid, Soma, St. Joseph’s Cough Syrup, Triaminicin, Triminicol, Trucal, Tussagesic, Tussaminic, Tussinic, Unisom Nighttime Sleep Aid, and Vicks Cough Syrup.
Please note that these products are often sold under various brand names. For example Dimetapp is a brand name of the generic drug loratadine, which is also sold under the brand names of Claritin, Alavert, Claritin Reditab, Claritin Hives Relief, Clear-Atadine, Clear-Atadine Children’s, Loratadine Reditab, Ohm Allergy Relief, Tavist ND, Wal-itin,Dimetapp ND.
As always, if you think you have a false positive test result then get a GC/MS confirmation test to eliminate the false positives.
Subj: Hydrocodone not showing up on test
Date: 9/13/2011
have compression fractures in my back, resulting having to do opaids, (hydrocodone) for at least a year now. I recently started to go to a pain clinic which tested my urine 3 times in 3 months, each time all was well except for this last one. It showed no hydrocodone in my system, just acetaminophine (spelling?) I last did one about 6am and my appointment was at 11:30. So now the Dr. says that I have not been doing them, and gave me the impression he thinks that I am selling them instead of doing them. Which is a bunch of bull as I really depend on these to ease the pain I have ALL the time. Why wouldn’t it show up??? Today did another urine test, but ended up doing blood instead. I last did one last night around 9:00 or so. So it probably won’t show up again!!! Any ideas on this?? Thank-you all!!!
Miss C
AskDocWeb: You are not the first person to complain about this. In 2004 as many as 44% of patients tested by the VA for medication compliance were found negative for opiates despite the patients being prescribed opioid medication. The VA concluded that the DOA immunoassay test was not sensitive enough. In other words the cutoff level was too high to detect the presence of opioids commensurate with what the VA considered minimum requirements.
It may be helpful to know that the body eliminates hydrocodone pretty fast. Since the half-life is only 3.8 hours, most of it would be out of your system within 8 to 10 hours. Some people use that information to time the taking of their meds to make sure that it shows up on the tests.
Subj: False positive for cocaine?
Date: 9/13/2011
What medications can cause a false positive for cocaine? Just had surgery on my tooth I was giving novacaine, tylenol w/ codiene laughing gas and an anestetic. Can any of this cause a flase tox for cocaine please its very important i know asaqp thanks.
Nicole
AskDocWeb: The only medications that have been reported to show up as cocaine on urine drug tests are antibiotics (Amoxicillin and Ampicillin). However, there are a few other possible causes for a false positive for cocaine: Coca tea, leaf, flour, and oil, diabetes, kidney disease, and tonic water. Topical anesthetics containing cocaine may also cause a positive test result.
Subj: Doxycycline HYC
Date: 9/13/2011
Could Doxycycline HYC cause a false reading in drug testing? Cocaine specifically?
Maria
AskDocWeb: We have had one antidotal report of Doxycycline showing up as cocaine but so far there is no documentation to prove that it might be a possibility.
