Subj: Positive for weed
Date: 9/26/2011
I have tested possitave for marajawana and i have never used it before. I was given a shot at the hospital before the test an they gave me Dilaudid, Zofran and Decadron can any of these have made the test be possitave for weed.

Stacy

AskDocWeb: Those drugs have not been reported to cause a false positive for marijuana however, that doesn’t rule out the possibility of a false positive. You can only do that with a confirmation test, which will show exactly what is in the sample.

Subj: Expert witness or studies?
Date: 9/26/2011
Do you know of any expert witness that could testify about cocaine being absorbed through the skin, or any studies written about cocaine absorption through the skin? Thank you.

John

AskDocWeb: In our opinion the best expert would be a toxicologist but good lick finding one. They typically work for large companies or government agencies. There was one study that involved the absorption of cocaine through the skin when applied to the underside of the arm (Baselt et al., Journal of Analytical Toxicology 1990 Nov-Dec; 14(6):383-4). They concluded that the absorption of cocaine through the skin represented a minor, but significant, route of exposure and that it needed to be considered when interpreting low-level urine drug testing results.

In the Journal of Forensic Sciences (1992 Jully 37(4):959-68)), there was a case report involving laboratory personnel working in crime labs who tested positive on cocaine urine toxicology screens from environmental exposure.

According to Quest Diagnostic Laboratories (http://www.questdiagnostics.com, an agency that does drug testing), “Drugs can be accidentally or deliberately swallowed, inhaled, injected, or absorbed through a skin surface or mucous membrane.” It lists cocaine specifically as one drug that can get into a person’s system that way.

Subj: Problem with social worker
Date: 9/27/2011
I was pregnant with known placenta previa because I had a baby 11 months prior and was 41 yrs old. I was in preterm labor and in the wrong hospital due to the jurisdiction of the ambulance. The hospital tested me for drugs and got a false positive for opiates. A confirmation test proved negative. When my baby was born they tested him, proved negative. I took a 3rd test voluntarily which also showed negative. My preemie had been transferred to a neonatal ICU – he was fine other than early.

That other hospital where he was, had gotten the info from the first hospital about the false positive. (HIPPA violation). So the social worker reported me to DCF despite she had 4 negative tests. When DCF finally saw my medical records they concurred with the doctors at the neonatal ICU and my obgyn that this was a false positive. But, because the social worker is a mandated reporter and needed to do her “due diligence” (which means she was protecting her own butt) she reported me. She reported me despite she had more information proving it was a false positive than DCF had when they reviewed my med. files and said the claim was unsubstantiated.

I sent tons of letters out. The Dept of Public Health investigated the hosp. where I gave birth and found they were “in violation of federal/state laws.” HOWEVER…attorneys tell me my case is not actionable because federal law prohibits me from filing suit against a HIPPA violation.

Subj: False positive for PCP?
Date: 9/27/2011
Can Lamictal or the combination of Lamictal and Celexa cause a false positive for pcp on a drug test?

Lori

AskDocWeb: Celexa has not shown up in the research on false positives. However, according to the Merck Manuals, Lamictal (Lamotrigine) may show up as a false positive for PCP.

Subj: Can Kenalog cause a false negative amphetamine test?
Date: 9/27/2011
Can the steriod Kenalog cause a false negative amphetamine test?

Barbara

AskDocWeb: No, Kenalog is not known to show up on urine drug screens as a false positive for anything.

Subj: Tested positive for methadone
Date: 9/27/2011
I recently tested positive for methadone. The medications I am prescribed are Strattera, Lodine and Levothyroxine. In addition, I am on a weight-loss program where I get Trim Max AC Vitamin injections. These injections contain: Adenosine-5 Triphosphate, L-Carnitine, Choline Chloride, Inositol, Methionine and Methylcobalamin (B12). Can any of the aforementioned cause a false-positive for methadone? I also take Allegra for allergies, and drink a lot of green tea.

Barbara

AskDocWeb: Some of that may cause a false positive for other things but none of what you are taking has been reported to cause a false positive for methadone.

Date: 9/28/2011
I recently tested possitive for cocaine and klonopin. i haven’t taken either but I am on alprazolam, prilosec otc, and was on penicillin and hydrocodone at the time of the test. Also, didn’t test positive for alprazolam which I am presribed. Could any of these caused a faulse possitve for the cocaine or Klonopin?

Jay

AskDocWeb: There are no reports of any of those causing a false positive for cocaine.

Subj: Tested positive for meth
Date: 9/28/2011
My husband recently had a drug test for his probation and it tested positive for meth but he does not take meth but he has had heart attacks and is on effient, isosorbide mononitrate, metoprolol tartrate, pravastatin, ranitidine, and aspirin. Can any of the medicines give a false positive?

Elizabeth

AskDocWeb: Some of those medications can cause a false positive on urine drug tests but not for meth. If the test result was a false positive then a confirmation test will show that.

Subj: Failed a drug test for codeine and thc
Date: 9/28/2011
Hello. I am currently on active drug court. I failed my first drug test and got put on a stricter drug testing. I haven’t smoked in some months now. And the other day. On the 23rd actually I failed a drug test for codeine and thc. The only drug I have taken which has been and continues to be prescribed is Promethazine with codiene syrup. I have a flu and have been using it quite often. Now I may get 6 months in jail. Does it really show up false positives?

Lee

AskDocWeb: Just because it “can” does not mean that it did. It is our understanding that urine drug tests have to be confirmed in order to be proven. Was your test confirmed?

Subj: Tested positive for cocaine
Date: 9/28/2011
I recently tested positive for cocaine. I don’t use cocaine. I was talking some old amoxicilin I had and doubled up on it because it was old. I work for the Federal Government and they don’t recognize this as a cause of false positive, or seem to care. What do I do now?

John

AskDocWeb: You could continue to deny the results of the urine test. In many places no action is taken until the test is submitted to a lab for a confirmation test. You may find it helpful to read the BUREAU OF JUSTICE ASSISTANCE (BJA) DRUG COURT TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE PROJECT.

David

AskDocWeb: Sorry David, we are limited to providing the information so you have to do your own work. You can look up the drugs you were taking on the page about false positives. Each substance has references you can follow to sources that may or may not be valid for your particular court case. That is something that your attorney would decide. Good luck.

Subj: Tested positive for amphetamines
Date: 9/29/2011
The other day at work I was really drowsy because I didn’t sleep well the night before and because I had gotten my flu shot earlier in the afternoon. My employer asked me to take a saliva drug test and of course I did because I had nothing to hide. Well I tested positive for amphetamines. My heart dropped. I am taking Claritin for my allergies, I had taken dayquil a couple days before because I thought it was a cold, I had taken an ephedrine a couple days before as well because I was very tired that day as well. I am also prescribed Wellbutrin for my depression. Could any of these caused a false positive on a salvia test?

Allison

AskDocWeb: We haven’t started the forum for saliva tests yet but will add your question to the list. The data on this forum applies only to urine drug testing.

Subj: Positive for THC
Date: 9/29/2011
I have taken 3 drug test and came up positive for THC. I am on xanaflex, lorecets, xanax, pherengan, cipro, adderol for being adhd, and soma… Can either one of these come up positive for THC. I have not ever smoked THC before. I was very dumb founded. Will someone please email and let me know…. THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!!!

Chasitie

AskDocWeb: Welcome Chasitie. Several of those are known to cause false positives but not for THC. However, a false positive may still have been caused by something else. If you tell them that you believe the test result is a false positive then your sample may be sent to another lab for confirmation, which should eliminate all false positive. Be warned that if it is not a false positive then the consequences of not admitting it right away are likely to be much more severe.
