Subj: Tested positive for cocaine
Date: 9/29/2011
I recently took a 5 panel test and tested positive for cocaine. I had been sick with bronchitis and on the following medications; Albuterol, Azithoromycin, Cephalexin, Ibueprophen, Amoxicillan, Flucticasone Prop, Hydrocodone-Homatropine Syrup, Methylprednisolone, Sertraline HCL, and Trazadone.
Kay
AskDocWeb: The only one of those that might explain the test result is amoxicillin. There are several sources that say it has shown up on urine drug tests as a false positive for cocaine (References: 13, 16, 18, 20, 21, 26, and 29).
Subj: Alcohol test
Date: 9/29/2011
I just found out that my urine test showed enough alcohol for my employer to order a rapid test. I have not had any alcohol for 6 weeks what could cause this?
Kennet
AskDocWeb: According to Sterling Reference Laboratories, the EtG (Ethylglucuronide) test may show a positive result from sources other than beverage alcohol. Here are some of the possibilities:
- balsamic vinegar
- beauty product that contains SD Alcohol 40
- breath drops
- cooking Vanilla (30% alcohol by volume)
- extra sour dough bread
- fake alcohol such as O’doull’s, Near beer, and Fre’ wine products
- hair dye
- mouthwash
- soy sauce
- teriaki sauce
- waterless hand soap. (Proven by recent clinical study)
Subj: Symbicort?
Date: 9/30/2011
An inmate medication was changed to symbicort. The next day he was drug tested and it came up positive. Do you think the symbicort inhaler caused a false positive result?
Adelina
AskDocWeb: That specific product has not been mentioned in the data on false positives. However, you may want to check the ingredients against the big list.
Subj: Mystery fail
Date: 10/1/2011
Hello again, this is Lee. I have not got my test confirmed. I have never had to do this. I quit smoking months ago, I failed the first one and passed the second. That is why this third mystery fail is weird to me. I have never had this happen. I have never randomly failed a drug test after passing one. I haven’t smoked. I don’t know what it means to confirm a drug test. So the test hasn’t been confirmed and I only have to the 10th to prove I didn’t smoke. I was heavily on promethazine due to my flu and was under the doctors orders.
Lee
AskDocWeb: Hello Lee, If you haven’t already done so, you will likely need to provide proof of your prescription for promethazine, which is known to sometimes show up as a false positive for marijuana. The pharmacist should be able to provide a copy of your prescription. You may also find it helpful to discuss this with the pharmacist who may be familiar with false positives.
When someone claims that their test result is a false positive, the sample may be sent out to an independent laboratory for additional testing. This additional testing is called a confirmation test. Typically this is a GC/MS test, which will prove whether marijuana is in your test sample or not. And you may or may not be required to pay for the additional testing, which could be several hundred dollars.
Please let us know how this comes out. We wish you luck.
Subj: Geodon?
Date: 10/1/2011
I take geodon 40mg and I have a drug test Monday will this cause me to fail.
Courtney
AskDocWeb: It is highly unlikely that geodon would show up on a urine drug test unless they are testing specifically for that drug.
Subj: Positive for benzodiazepines
Date: 10/2/2011
I am currently on an acne cream Benzoyl Peroxide 10% gel and Doxcylcine Hyclate pill and I keep coming up positive for benzodiazepines and I dont get why. ANYONE please help because I am not trying to get sent away for pills that I am not taking to “get high” !!
Jami
Subj: Citalopram?
Date: 10/2/2011
Help! Ok so I’m freaking out because I had a interview and took a urine test so I could get the job and my results have not come back yet but I took citalopram 20mg and I’m just wondering if it will come back positive for using drugs?
Joseph
AskDocWeb: No, you can breath easy and relax. Citalopram does not cause a false positive for any drugs of abuse on urine drug tests.
Subj: Omeprazole
Date: 10/2/2011
Would omeprazole show up on a drug test?
Jordan
AskDocWeb: Yes, according to Rxlist.com Omeprazole may show up on a urine drug test for THC or marijuana.
Subj: Suboxone and Tylenol PM
Date: 10/2/2011
I havent used benzodiazapam in years, yet recently my urine tests have been positive for them! the only thing I take is suboxone and tylenol pm! is it possible the tylenol pm is causing this? I live on them lately, every nite for the last 2 months and my drug tests have been positive for benzodiazapam!
Patty
AskDocWeb: To our knowledge Suboxone has never shown up as benzodiazepine, nor has Tylenol PM.
Subj: Failed a drug screen for benzo’s
Date: 10/3/2011
My husband just failed a drug screen for benzo’s and he hasn’t took anything. Would loradaine tablets, sulfameth, clindamycin hcl, or hydro’s separate or mixed call him to have a false positive? Our kids are on the line.
Lisa
AskDocWeb: Those drugs are not known to cause a false positive for benzodiazepine although the test result could still be a false positive for other reasons. The only way to show that the test result was a false positive is to get a confirmation test and hope it fails to confirm the benzos.
Subj: Ibuprofen?
Date: 10/3/2011
My Bf took a large amount of ibprophen he showed a positive for THC level of 29ng… he has to have a hair test now and my question is that gonna show up too.
Rita
AskDocWeb: If may or may not show up. Does he use marijuana?
Subj: Positive for suboxone
Date: 10/4/2011
I have recently come up positive for suboxone in a UA. I have not taken suboxone at all. The only medication I have taken is Tramadol 50mg and Advil pm. I am at a loss for information. I search the web for hours and cant find any help. If I cant prove I didnt take it, I may go to prison. I hope you can help me. Please reply if you can. Thank you so much.
Miranda
AskDocWeb: Hello Miranda. It sounds like you need to get a GC/MS confirmation test to show exactly what is in your test sample. If it is a false positive the results will be dismissed along with any doubts about your innocence.
Subj: Hair segment dates are wrong
Date: 10/4/2011
A segment was ordered on a positive folicle test for cocaine I do not dispute the positive but rather the dates are wrong. I quit in May and the segment test has me using for the last 6 months with the amount decreasing. Is there anyway to prove I’m not lying?
Julliette
AskDocWeb: Not that we know of but maybe a reader can help you out.
Subj: Symptoms of gout
Date: 10/6/2011
Can the symptoms of gout cause a false positive for cocaine?
Russ
AskDocWeb: The only diseases that have been associated with false positives are diabetes and liver disease.
Subj: Adderall and Ecstasy
Date: 10/6/2011
AskDocWeb, PLEASE help me!! I have 12 hernuated discs, scoliosis, a bone fragment floating in my spinal fluid migrating toward my skull, hypothyrois, anemia, depression, anxiety, and ADHD/suspected narcolepsy yet (in an ironic twist but, not) insomnia. I am suspecting fibromyalgia due to a car accident with the others – hypothyroidism being due to my having been overweight for so long and anemia having been due to the gastric bypass surgery I had.
In any case, due to my neurologist’s prescribing me 120mg/day of Adderal due to my suspected narcolepsy (which could be due to sleep deprivation from the insomnia suffered from the pain of fibromyalgia which is not yet diagnosed but of which I exhibit all the symptoms, including anxiety and depression, fatigue, etc)my pain management doc just discharged me because he detected “Ecstacy” in my urine multiple times (I DO NOT TAKE DRUGS OTHER THAN THOSE WHICH ARE LEGITIMATELY PRESCRIBED TO ME).
Now I am searching high and low for a pain mngmt doc who will take me on with such a bogus rap sheet…so to speak. Can you confirm in layman’s terms how Adderall at such a high dosage can possibly read as Ecstasy? PLEASE! I have back surgery scheduled in 6 days and the surgeon is close to refusing to operate! Thank you for your time!
Samantha
AskDocWeb: Sorry Samantha, Adderall is not known to show up as ecstasy on urine drug tests.
If you are willing to get a GC/MS confirmation test then you may have a chance of convincing them that the results of the urine test was a false positive. However, that is true only if it really was a false positive.
Subj: Jumping through hoops to keep my professional license
Date: 10/6/2011
I was released 1 week ago from a detox center after going through severe withdrawl from Gabopentin and Hydrocodone. However, 7 different doctors interrogated me as to what drugs I was using because my urine tested positive for Benzos! I have never used another persons medications and have not taken anything listed in the Benzo category. The final MD that spoke to me summed it up sarcastically to “the little green Martians must have put it in my body”!
I am not a junkie, and have never been or have had thoughts of being one! I was merely being treated for a back injury sustained in a recent MVA and had only been on the mix for less than three weeks but had severe side effects from the medicine. I quit taking them both the same day and my body went into severe withdrawl– hence the detox center. I am now jumping through hoops to keep my professional license in NYS!
Theresa
AskDocWeb: Welcome to the forum Theresa. Remember that it is possible to feel guilty even though you are innocent. And of course it would be easier for your doctors to deal with the situation if you were guilty. If you are innocent then it is well worth the effort to get the urine test confirmed by GC/MS testing. That is likely to be the only evidence they will accept as proof of a false positive.
