Subj: Hepatitis-C and Urinalysis
Date: 10/20/2011
If one was Hep-C Positive, and Urinalysis, drug screening was being observed would the Hep-C take possibly up to three times longer, compared to a normal liver, to break down Benzodiazepine’s and THC Levels(Marijuana)? Regards,

Kate

AskDocWeb: Since THC and benzodiazepines are metabolized by the liver, any decrease in the function of that organ would increase the amount of time that they are present in the system. The less liver function you have the longer it will take for your body to get rid of them.

Subj: What foods or drinks could test positive for opiates?
Date: 10/21/2011
I was in a half way house. The day before release they do drug and alcohol testing. I tested positive for oxy codone. Since June 6th I have not took anything that would violate my probation agreement which is any perscribed drugs, street drugs, or alcohol. What if any foods or drinks could maybe test positive for the opiates class? I do drink mass amounts of cola pops and pops high in caffeine and have eaten some different asian sauces in store brand. But I have no answers why? This little misshappening will result in alot of days behind bars. Please if you can get me an answer. Thank you for reading hope you can help.

Jesse

AskDocWeb: The only food or drink that has shown a positive for opiates are poppy seeds and quinine in tonic water. You might want to check your Asian sauces to see if they contain ephedra (Ma Haung). That has caused problems like this for others. However, it is not necessary to take something in order to get a false positive for opiates. Diseases such as diabetes, kidney infection, and liver disease have also been identified as possible causes of false positives for opiates. You may want to get a complete medical physical to cover that possibility. If nothing else, we would certainly want to get a GC/MS confirmation test.

Subj: Temazepam
Date: 10/21/2011
Can Temazepam ever test positive for diazepam?

SCR

AskDocWeb: Diazepam contains benzodiazepines and Temazepam is a benzodiazepine. Most urine drug tests do not differentiate between benzodiazepines. That is, they are not fine tuned enough to tell which benzodiazepine you took.

Subject: Pre screen drug test

What will caust a false positive for htc. i had to take a pre screen drug test for a job and they swabbed my mouth and it said htc. this is impossible since i never do drugs. i am though on alot of meds. i am diabetic, hypertensive and the list goes on. i am currently taking: lisinopril hctz, carvedilol, medformin, prolozec, clariton, tamoxifen, lipitor, fish oil, mutli vitamins, black cohosh, flovent, bentyle, benefiber, allign. I have also used ibuprofen and have been on amoxicillin alot lately trazadone. I will be taking a urine test in 3 days will i still show positive for htc?

Lap

AskDocWeb: There is a “possibility” of testing positive for THC. Now that you know that you can be prepared to request a confirmation test. It is always a good idea to make sure they note all the prescription and non-prescription drugs you are taking.

Since you are taking Lipitor you may want to read some of the feedback on that drug.

Subject: Asthma medication
Date: 10/22/2011
Is there any chance that my asthma medication will show up positive in a urine test for meth. I use Symbicort 80/4.5 and albuterol sulfate.

Tom

AskDocWeb: Neither Symbicort (budesonide and formoterol fumarate dihydrate) nor albuterol sulfate has been reported to cause a false positive on urine drug tests.

Subject: Switched to Qualitest
Date: 10/24/2011
I am in a drug court program and I tested positive for EDDP. I was taking oxycodone 30mg by Malincroft and no problem for as month. I switched to Qualitest on Tuesday, on Thursday the 2nd line was light for EDDP but enough there to be negative, on Saturday the line was not there at all so positive. I quit taking the oxycodone and Monday the line was there but light again and on Friday I was tested and negative for Oxy and EDDP.

Subject: I lied
Date: 10/24/2011
I am HIV positive my first drug test came back as false positive, for my second job the drug test came back negative. Now I am nervous because I applied for the post office and there were two questions about am I seeing a doctor and am I on medication and I selected no due to privacy and people have different views on it. Im scared because I dont want to make it seem like I lied and get fined and not qualified for the job. I just felt like I was looking out for me now I dont no what to do or say if it comes back false positive. I brought my medicine bottle with me and explained but the lab sends off there sample instead of reading the test there so that was a waste of time. I done have a statement from my doctor about my presception and when I asked two of the nurses they gave me a yes and no answer. I just dont see how within a couple of months it read a false postive then a negative results. Is it because my body is use to the meds or maybe I am undetectable now. Please help thanks.

Nick

AskDocWeb: If you told them that you were not on medication and not under a doctor’s care then you told them two lies in order to get the job. That is not looking out for your best interest because if anything shows up on the test, you have no excuse for it. You can’t claim it was a false positive because you told them that you were not on any medication. That looks really bad.

Wanting to protect your privacy is understandable but when you submit to a drug test you are giving up part of that right. You are giving them permission to search your body for prescription and illegal drugs. Hopefully you have learned that lying about meds on a job application is a mistake, especially when it is going to be followed by a drug test.

Subject: Is it possible to contaminate oneself when handling the patch?
Date: 10/24/2011
Date: 10/12/2011 I tested positive for fentanyl and have never in my life used it. I have dealt with it but have never taken or consumed. Is it possible for something to make this show positive for fentanyl on gc/sm? I understand that it is the most accurate way to tell but seriously have never taken it. The funny thing is I did take vicodin and morphine the day before the test and it never showed up. Is it possible to contaminate oneself when handling the patch???? Michelle

AskDocWeb replied: There are a many patches on the market for delivering a verity of medications. Which patch did you handle? If you took morphine and it didn’t show up on the GC/MS confirmation test then we start wondering if the sample that was tested was yours.

IN RESPONSE TO ANSWER. The patch I handled was a fentanyl patch is it possible to have cross transferred the medication within the patch on my skin and did not realize it… Although I find it hard to believe I wouldnt know. But being that fentanyl is stored in muscle and fat is there a possibility that enough could have crossed the skin barrier to show up in a gc/sm being that cut-off levels are 0.1ng/ml?

This is driving me crazy trying to figure out how the heck this is possible???? And yes I question whether it was truly my sample or even tampered with.. because as I said I did take other meds the day before and day of that never showed up…But who would listen they see positive and automatically your an addict!!! LOL

Michelle

AskDocWeb: The Fentanyl patch is designed to allow the medication to be absorbed through the skin, which it does with ease. Fentanyl (Duragesic, Sublimaze, “China White”) is an extremely high potency synthetic narcotic (approximately 100 to 200 times stronger than morphine). The amount of Fentanyl detectable on a drug test is far below the amount that would produce effects you would notice.

You may find it useful to learn about the “chain of custody” procedure for drug testing in order to find out who has access to the samples and if your sample could have been switched.

The GC/MS test we looked at (Redwood Toxicology) has a minimum detection limit for fentanyl of 5ng/ml. Where did you get the “0.1ng/ml” figure?

Subject: Combination of ballofen, lyrica and methadone?
Date: 10/25/2011
Can the combination of ballofen, lyrica and methadone cause a false positive for cocaine?

Adams

AskDocWeb: Ballofen is not in our database. Could that be Baclofen (brand names Kemstro, Lioresal, and Gablofen), which is a muscle relaxer and an antispastic agent? In any case we tried it both ways but didn’t find any combination of those drugs that would test positive for cocaine.

Subject: Question about chain of custody
Date: 10/25/2011
If a workplace request a specimen and the collector then transfers this specimen to a postal service such as fed ex (which is checked on the carbon copy of the testing form can this be considered breaking the chain of custody??? Since it has been transferred to an untrained professional on the handling of such specimens. Isn’t the person collecting suppose to ensure it is obtained without tampering to the laboratory. Also the collector brought her child into the workplace and had him with her before and after not during but specimen was transported with the child. Can any of this be used to question chain of custody?? And what if privacy regs were broken I was put on display in a main station which everyone knew why I was there???

Michelle

AskDocWeb: There are mandatory guidelines for “Federal Workplace Drug Testing Programs” regarding the documentation of the chain of custody. However, the private sector (non-government) is not required to follow all of those guidelines. The exact chain of custody procedures vary from one state and company to the next. Unionized public sector employees are allowed to negotiate the chain of custody procedures used in their drug testing. Some states like Arkansas have not enacted any laws regarding the testing of employees for drugs. So what does all that mean? Drug testing in the USA is a complicated mess. There are different standards for different situations and locations. The answers to your questions depend on the following:

  • Your state of residence
  • Federal or non-federal employee
  • Union or non-union employee
  • Are you an applicant or an employee
  • Does the job involve safety or security functions

You do have a constitutional right to privacy. Although drug testing has bee deemed legal, it may be subject to constitutional challenge if testing results are indiscriminately divulged or if procedures for obtaining specimens do not respect the privacy rights of the person being tested. Of course all this is personal opinion. It is NOT legal advice. For that you need to contact an attorney or ask an online lawyer.
