What caused the positive result?
Date: 10/31/2011
If a person that does not use drug at all . only med’s for a injury and diebetes .and on a urine test, tested positive both split urine samples .Is there any way to find out why, or what caused the positive result? may be health problems I don’t about ,Or something about the test.

Rodriguez

AskDocWeb: If the test result was a true positive, a GC/MS confirmation test will show what caused it. If the test result was a false positive then you have to resort to a process of eliminating the possible causes. That is one of the reasons for this list. Human error is also a possibility. Mistakes and sloppy work happen in laboratories just as they do in other work environments – and there is a strong incentive to cover it up instead of making it right. In our opinion the causes of too many false positives are never identified.

Astepro?
Date: 11/1/2011
Can astepro make you test positive for hydrocodone?

JL

AskDocWeb: Astepro (Azelastine Nasal Spray) has not been reported to cause any problems with urine drug tests.

False positive for Cocaine?
Date: 11/2/2011
I am asking due to my boyfriends recent drug test, who gets tested monthly and has for 9 years. His test came back positive for THC and Cocaine. He has been on several different medications in the last months they are as follows: Halobetasol-propionate cream Bactrim Meloxicam Celebrex Loradine Naproxin Gabapentin He is also on a cream that contains Cimetadine/deoxy/d-glucose. Can you tell me if any of these would make you false positive for Cocaine.

Shannon

AskDocWeb: Welcome to the forum Shannon. None of those are on the list of substances that may cause a false positive on urine drug tests. However, as mentioned above, there are other possible causes, which is why it is important to get a confirmation test.

How long does it take for Librium to leave your system?
Date: 11/2/2011
Hello, I am in a treatment program where I was initially prescribed Librium to help with withdrawal symptoms. 54 days later and I am still testing positive for librium. I took benadryl two days before my last test and read on your site that this drug can be mistaken in the urine for benzos. First question, is this true? Second question: What is the outside time frame for librium to leave the system? My doctor says it can linger for a long time. I’d like your opinion.

Nancy

AskDocWeb: In answer to your first question, it appears that it “may” be a possibility based on a report from Erowid.org. If you get a GC/MS confirmation test and it fails to confirm the presence of benzodiazepines then you will have a definite answer.

There are two ways to measure Librium in the body, the drug itself in your bloodstream and the active benzodiazepine metabolite (desmethyldiazepam), which is what the drug becomes once it is processed by your body. It takes the body quite a while to eliminate the metabolite. The half-life for the active metabolite is estimated to range from 36 to 200 hours and it typically takes 5 half-lives to completely clear the system. However, the time needed for clearance may increase significantly if the kidney function is impaired or the person is over 60 years of age.

What causes a false positive for methadone?
Date: 11/3/2011
I just tested positive in a urine test for methadone, the eppd indicated a low dose, I have never taken methadone before. Can you please advise what/if any other drug will cause this?

Lucy

AskDocWeb: The current list shows that a false positive for methadone might be caused by antihistamines in general, Bentyl, Dolophine, Elavil, Nyquil, Phenergan, Physetone, and Vicks Formula 44M. However none of these have made it past the GC/MS confirmation test.

Traces of buprenorphine
Date: 11/3/2011
So I’m in a program called Drug Court. I am tested every week and they are very thorough drug screens. I keep having traces of buprenorphine. The judge told me to research why I am having these little traces. I am not on any meds. The only thing I do regularly is: I eat fast food daily.. Take bc powders.. Drink redbullll. Nothing more or less. Please tell me why I am falsely showing traces of this drug.

Holly

AskDocWeb: We don’t know. The data we have does not show any possible reason for it.

Sweat patches
Date: 11/4/2011
My friends husband is on drug court and gets urine tests 5 times a week sometimes even more. For about 30 days he also had the sweat patch on. All 3 sweat patches came up positive for cocaine but all urines came up negaitive. He does not take ANY perscription medications and has not used any illegal drugs with in the last 90 days. The only thing he has taken is Zantac and Pepcid AC, and he took Cylexa one day like 2 monthes ago. We have done so much research and can not figure out why his patch is coming up positive but his urines are clean. He is sitting in county jail and his freedom and family is at steak! PLEASE HELP!!!

Brandi

AskDocWeb: If you can learn the name of the sweat patches or their manufacturer then we may be able to do some research for you.

Prescription oxycodone
Date: 11/4/2011
I am on drug testing, I had a prescription for liquid oxycodone for strep throat about a month later I took a few tea spoons for a tooth ache, and it came up positive. My question is should I be okay? It was my prescription.

Lisa

AskDocWeb: As long as the prescription for oxycodone was not expired, you are not likely to have a problem.

False positive urinalysis for cocaine?
Date: 11/6/2011
Can a mixture of nexium, tylenol pm, trammodol and gi cocktail cause a false positive urinalysis for cocaine?

Victor

AskDocWeb: It doesn’t look like you would get a false positive from the drugs you list. However, the GI cocktail would depend on what they put in it, which varies.

But was told nothing else was fould in the urine. my results were lost for two days then found .What surprise.

I’m about to lose my job
Date: 11/7/2011
Been taking Advil off and on for a couple of weeks. Took a drug screen 11/1/11. I got the call today, that my sample came back positive for THC. I’m about to lose my job. What do you suggest, if anything?

Phillip

AskDocWeb: If you believe that the test result is a false positive then getting a GC/MS confirmation test would seem to be worth it, even if you have to pay for it out of your own pocket. That is what we would do if it happened to one of us.

Dirty test for amphetamines
Date: 11/7/2011
I just been told I have a dirty test for amphetamines but I haven’t use drugs. I had a really bad cold two weeks ago & was taking cold medicine. I’m really upset. Could that be why it came out positive? I need help understanding that…

Adriana

AskDocWeb: Some cold medications, even over-the-counter products, have been reported to show up as false positive for amphetamines. (See Dristan Cold caplets or Drixoral Cold and Flu, etc.) When urine drug tests can’t tell the difference between the cold medication and amphetamines the cold medications are said to be “cross-reactive.” Fortunately the confirmation test eliminates these types of false positives.

Appetite suppressant
Date: 11/7/2011
I bought a appetite suppressant at Whole Foods. It is suppose to be all natural ephedra free. It has L-Phenylalnine 500mg and Guarana Extract 300 mg taken 3x a day. Will there drugs and amounts show up in a laboratory urine analysis?

Katye

AskDocWeb: If they are using urine tests for drugs of abuse then you should be okay. Although you may want to check the warnings about using guarana.

Tested positive for heroine and morphine
Date: 11/8/2011
My son had his gallbladder out on 9/22 and was prescribed a total of 85 5-3ocycodone tablets; 35 on 9/16/2011 and 50 on 9/22/2011, the day of his surgery. On 10/11 he was drug tested (buccal swab) by the court and he was arrested today because they said he tested positive for heroine and morphine. My son is NOT a heroine user and I am wondering if this could be a false-positive result?

Donna

AskDocWeb: We have not heard of that happening but a false positive is still possible. If you get a GC/MS confirmation test you can get a definitive answer.

Living with someone who smokes pot
Date: 11/8/2011
Good morning, This may sound like a silly question, but I really need to know. How easy is it to show a false positive on a drug test if you live with someone who smokes pot? For example, if I kiss someone who has just finished smoking, and was subject to a random drug test the next day, could I show a false positive? What if I spend time in a room where pot has been smoked, and I can still smell it in the air? What do I need to do to protect myself? Thank you,

Bonita

AskDocWeb: In order for you to smell pot smoke you have to inhale it into your system. As long as you can smell it, small amounts are going into your body. Unfortunately there is not enough data available to tell how easy it would be for secondhand pot smoke to cause a positive drug test result. All we have to go on so far is the court testimony in a New Jersey court from a toxicologist, Robert Havier, Ph.D. who says, “some studies suggested passive inhalation (of pot smoke) could result in levels up to 20 ng/ml.” You need to know that if the pot shows up on your drug test, that is NOT a false positive. The only way to protect yourself from that happening is to remove yourself from the situation but that’s up to you.
