Tea caused positive drug test for cocaine
Date: 11/10/2011
I have a stomach condition called IBS. Irritable bowel syndrome. I take a perscription drug named Amitiza. I found three different chinese herbal medicinal teas that have proved very helpful for my health condition. However, combining the Amitiza with the three teas have caused me to have a positive drug urinalysis for cocaine??? I have not done any drugs especially cocaine? I have been told by several pharmacists that there may be an ingredient in the teas that interact with my medication to give such a result for cocaine. Especially since the teas are NOT FDA approved. Have you ever heard of this scenario? Thank you.

Lisa

AskDocWeb: We haven’t heard of an ingredient in tea that might interact with Amitiza. However, some imported tea contains coca leaf, which contains small amounts of cocaine. Although the amounts are small it is enough to show up on a drug test.

As for FDA approval, that has become controversial. Do a search on “FDA picks on cherry growers” or walnut growers. It appears that according to the FDA, if a food protects against heart disease or any other medical condition, it is illegal for those selling that food to publish any scientific information about it. That is almost as outrageous as the EU saying that water is not healthy (story). If the FDA continues on its present course it will try to reclassify water as a drug because it has a medicinal effect on dehydration.

Malarone
Date: 11/14/2011
Will Malarone (anti-malaria) cause a false positive?

Damon

AskDocWeb: Malarone is a multi-drug combination containing atovaquone and proguanil hydrochloride, neither of which is on the list of possible causes for a false positive urine drug test. However, we have read one antidotal report that it caused a false positive for THC (marijuana) but there is no documentation to verify that.

Lidoderm?
Date: 11/14/2011
I have a ? Last week I went for a drug screen for legal matter I didn’t think to tell the interviewer that I use lidoderm patches the ua icup test was positive for cocaine which Ive never used any possibility they could cause a false positive?

Cris

AskDocWeb: In our opinion it is highly unlikely that Lidoderm would show up on a urine test as a false positive for anything. Of course if you think that your test result is a false positive then by all means get a confirmation test. Although Lidoderm may not have caused it there are other possible causes, human error, etc.

Hair follicle test for child custody
Date: 11/14/2011
Hi, in March of this year I took a hair follicle test for child custody. I tested positive for cocaine. I have not done cocaine in over 5 years. and only three times in my life, all of which ended me up in ER for severe migraines, which I have suffered from since I was a teenager. I am 40 now. the court took my 11 year old daughter and told me there was no way that a hair follicle test could be wrong.

I was taking several prescribed meds at the time. and amoxiocilin was part of them. three rounds actually in a 4 month period. I was also miss prescribed with mobic and celexa which left me with severe drug interactions. also I was given soma, and valium taken only when last effort for sleep and severe muscle spasms. I have back and neck injuries and diagnosed with RA about 2 years ago. Also, was taking hormone replacement therapy thru the bio identical hormones placed under the skin in my hips. ocassionally for needed energy I would drink red bulls a few a week. and maybe 3 times a month I would take appetite suppressents like stacker 3 or 2’s and xenadrine.

The court still says that none of these could cause false postives and hair follicles are always right. I beg to differ. I am a devoted mother and was at the mercy of my doctor due to advanced stages or rheumatoid arthitis. please help? I know that my liver is not right, due to the years of taking ibuprofen and tylenol. due u have any ideas for me or and way I can find proof to show that hair follicles as well as any test given by humans and machines can never be 100%, I have since stop taking everything. I also use a tense unit then and all the time now since that is my only chance of weaking the pain. I am desparate and the courts are delusional if they think that all these test are accurate please help me.

Tracy

AskDocWeb: It is our understanding that the law requires urine drug screens that show positive must undergo confirmation testing in order to be used in court. Of course you would have to check with Adan attorney to find out if that applies where you live.

How can I convince them
Date: 11/14/2011
I am on 60 MG of adderall a day, my parents recently drug tested me via hair sample because they thought I was using cocaine. I have NEVER used it and yet they say I had nearly 20,000 mg of the metabolytes Cocaine produces in my body. I have a few questions, I really really need help here, this could ruin my life.

1. How can I convince them that the amount of Cocaine in my hair on top of the adderall is impossible due to death?

2. I am taking antibiots, Trazadone, Milk Thistle, IBurpofin and a few other things. Is there ANYTHING that could have triggered this?

JV

AskDocWeb: Wow! It may help to know that 20,000 mg is many times the amount that would be lethal. That means that either you are a very high functioning zombie or someone is not reading the test results correctly. As for how you convince them of that, you need an authority figure that they respect. That might be a doctor or a pharmacist who could confirm whether or not they are reading the test right.

There is a long list of possible causes for false positives on urine tests. Hair tests are more accurate but even the federal government says that they have to be confirmed by additional testing before being accepted.

Motrin and drug test screening
Date: 11/14/2011
I see that motrin can possibly cause false positives for drug use. How long would you need to not take motrin before a drug test screening to be sure it was out of your system. 2-3 days or longer, less? Would regular use of 800’s make a difference. Thanks For Your Help.

David

AskDocWeb: The half-life of Motrin ranges from 1.8 to 2 hours. It generally takes about 5 half-lives for a drug to completely clear the system. However, the metabolites typically take longer. How much longer is not known but we would guess that that they would not last much more than one day.

We are confused and concerned
Date: 11/15/2011
My son is on parol, one drug testing facility repeatedly said he was positive for K-2(spice/synthetic marijuana), so we started going to another testing facility on the same exact days that we’d test at the first lab. Lab #2 was negative on each 9 panel drug screen with a special emphasis on k-2, while Lab #1 repeatedly tested positive… Suddenly Lab -1 said negative and Lab-2 tested positive for 4-Hydroxypentyl, and 5- Hydroxypentyl. Also listing Omega Hydroxyl as a positive. We are confused and concerned as to what could be happening here. Can you please, please help? I am 100% sure that my son isn’t doing any drugs at all. Help ASAP would be so appreciated as this could send him to prison and that wouldn’t be right. Thank you in advance.

JUDITH

AskDocWeb: It sounds like you may be trying to compare apples to oranges here. That is, the labs may be using different tests. It would be helpful to know the name of the test kit that each lab is using so that we could do some research for you. If they are doing confirmation tests, what results are they getting?

False positives for Ultram?
Date: 11/15/2011
What are the false positives for Ultram? Buprenorphine?

AskDocWeb: Our database does not list any false positives for those drugs.

Tri Methyl X
Date: 11/15/2011
I would like to no it ( tri methyl x )will give u a dirty urine? Thanks.

Rickie

AskDocWeb: Tri Methyl X is a prohormone stack, which includes Superdrol, Phera-Plex and Halodrol. It is a muscle mass builder but it’s also a triple threat to your liver and other organs if used wrongly. Hopefully you are doing a complete bloodwork pre and post cycle including cholesterol, major hormones, full thyroid panel, lipid profile, liver function, kidney function, and prostate profile. Any or all of these may be negatively impacted by this combination. It’s also hard on the hair line.

The only good news with this OmnEvol clone is that it hasn’t shown up on urine drug tests for drugs of abuse unless they are testing for steroids. Tri Methyl X was recalled November 3, 2009.

Fluoxetine 20mg
Date: 11/15/2011
My son takes Fluoxetine 20mg. He will have ua whenever is CCO asks for one. Well today he failed the test. Can you fail a us on this drug? And if so what kind of reading do you get that causes the failure? Thank you.

Pamela

AskDocWeb: Yes, it is possible to fail a drug test while taking Fluoxetine. Fluoxetine (Prozac) has shown up on urine tests as a false positive for amphetamines and LSD.

Do I need to worry?
Date: 11/15/2011
I am currently on effexor xr, dexilant, (and sometimes rantindine), succlarate, another med for IBS. Begins with an L but dont remember to always take it, take niacin 500mg, vit D3 4,000 IU, fish oil, serquel 800 mg, lisinopril, xanax 1mg 3x, nuerontin 600mg 3x, ambien, vitamin c, and have prescription for promethizene for nausea, tramadol as needed, when naproxen or ibu does not work, and metaformin 2X. I do not take the tramadol very often, but eat naproxen and ibu like candy, which i assume has added to the GERD, am also supposed to be on a medication to lower cholesterol but after all the above couldnt afford. I do not take any other medications. Do I need to worry about a urine test, or a blood test?

Babble

AskDocWeb: Some of what you are taking might show up as a false positive but as long as you have legitimate prescriptions for those medications you should be okay. If you do get a false positive, you know that a confirmation test will eliminate them so there is no need to worry.

Sudafed?
Date: 11/17/2011
Would sudafed come up a false positive for benzos on a urine drug screen?

Honesty

AskDocWeb: No, it might show up as amphetamines, meth and ecstasy but not benzodiazepine.

Glucomannan
Date: 11/17/2011
Well I want to take glucomannan fiber and I hope it doesn’t show up as a false positive.

Patricia

AskDocWeb: Glucomannan has not shown up in the research on false positives so you are probably okay in that respect. However, although glucomannan is marketed as a nutritional supplements for constipation, obesity, high cholesterol, acne vulgaris and type 2 diabetes, the FDA has not approved it for the treatment of any of those medical conditions. Several companies selling products containing glucomannan have been disciplined by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) for misleading or exaggerated claims about the health benefits of glucomannan supplements.
