Positive for benzodiazepine
Date: 11/28/2011
My friend takes albuterol and tramadol. He was recently drug tested and came back positive for benzodiazepine. He has not used any benzodiazepines in quite a number of years. Why might he have tested positive for it? Or is it most likely a false positive?
St3v3
AskDocWeb: There is a small chance that the lab made a mistake or that the test kit was bad. That is a very small chance but it is still real. It is also possible that he started using benzodiazepine again.
Dismissed as a patient
Date: 11/28/2011
I take zanaflex, been taking it for 5 years. Never went not one day without taking it. My dr gave me a urine test and it came back negative for zanzlex an he dismissed me as a patient. So now I can’t get my pain meds or lyrica. I have severe back pain, multiple surgeries. What could have caused the test to be negative?
Elizabeth
AskDocWeb: There is some variation in the length of time that it takes to metabolize drugs. Some people metabolize them faster than others and Zanaflex has a short half-life, just 2.5 hours. Typically if the last dose taken was taken more than 12 hours ago then it may not show up on a urine drug test. However is you have a faster metabolism that time period may be reduced. Drinking an unusual amount of water may also dilute the test sample. A diluted sample may not have the concentration level that is needed to show that you are taking the drug.
False breath test
Date: 11/29/2011
This is for false breath test….the only thing that I can think of that could cause a false breath test is an aerosol inhaler…I use one of them and I have to blow in a breathlyzer every weekend for the courts. I used my inhaler right before the test and came up positive….but one beer takes one hour to come out of your system….how much you had before you drove is unknown to me, but if you blew a 1.1 you must have been trashed if you didnt drink for 12 hours.

Zofran
Date: 11/29/2011
Will zofran give a false postive for barbituates??
Fran
AskDocWeb: Zofran does not show up as a false positive for barbiturates.
Positive for meth
Date: 11/30/2011
Recently failed a UA pos for meth i take zrtec, execerdian, zantac, fish oil, risperidone, nabumetone, methocarbomal, flinixetine, gabapentine.
Mark
AskDocWeb: The only one of your meds that show up on the list is Zantac (ranitidine), which has been reported to test positive for methamphetamines.
Tested positive for Nordiazepam
Date: 11/30/2011
I recently took a GC MS urine test for my work. I take klonopin, depakote, abilify, trazodone, hydroxozine pameoate, hydrocodone. I was told I tested positive for thy hydrocodone wich I have a rx for but I was also told I tested for nordiazepam? I hae asked around and no one knows why this would be. I take amytriptlyine occassionaly, what other drugs would cause this positive?
Leona
AskDocWeb: Amitriptyline has shown up as tricyclic antidepressants (TCA) and LSD but not Nordiazepam. Sorry Leona, we don’t know what would cause that.
Tested positive for methamphetamine
Date: 11/30/2011
I am on probation and I get instant urine screens every week. I tested positive for methamphetamine on a 5 panel drug screen. I have never used a narcotic in the methamphetamine catagory, I did however take a zantac the day before the drug screen. So I had them send it to the lab, now will the lab be able to determine whether or not I used a narcotic or if it was a false positive?
David
AskDocWeb: The purpose of the additional testing at an outside lab is to either confirm the results or eliminate false positives. If Zantac (ranitidine) showed up as a false positive then the lab will show negative for methamphetamines.
Kidney, liver, and diabetes
Date: 11/30/2011
My husband, aged 53 tested positive for cocaine. He has never used cocaine. As I scan the net for possible false positive triggers, I keep running into kidney, liver, and diabetes. To our knowledge he has none of these. Should he be checked out by a doctor? Maybe we should monitor his blood sugar or something. It just made me a bit concerned for possible health implications. Thanks
Jude
AskDocWeb: Since the connections between false positives and those disease/conditions have been documented there is a legitimate cause for concern. If he hasn’t had a physical in the past year then you may want to do that.
Hemp Seed Oil
Date: 11/30/2011
I am in a situation were I was given a random urinalysis, and the results came back positive marijuana. Now I stand a chance of losing my job I am currently appealing this. I am taking Hemp Seed Oil for Arthritis, my alternative medicine Doctor introduced me to this regimen in 2009 and I have been taking it every since. Do you have any literature that you could send me via Internet I have been on Administrative LWOP because I received a false positive reading and need any assistance you can offer to help me substantiate “False Positives”. Thanks for any help you can offer.
Mark
AskDocWeb: We were first alerted to the possibility of Hemp Seed Oil causing problems on urine tests from a book titled, “Ur-Ine Trouble”. This was seconded in a discussion forum for obstetrics and gynecology. Later an article in the Oregon Herald also said that hemp seed oil was showing up on urine tests as marijuana. This was confirmed by Medimpex United Inc and IT Laboratories, drug testing and toxicology).
Doxycycline?
Date: 12/3/2011
I’m in the military. I’ve taken several drug test and no problem, the doc put me on doxycycline and I failed for opiates… I don’t take anything but GNC supplements.
Reallyupset
AskDocWeb: First we want to thank you for your service to the people of this country. Several others have had problems with doxycycline on urine tests so we did some additional checking. Unfortunately 2 hours of research did not find any documented proof that doxycycline might show up as opiates. The only reference we found for Doxycycline Hyclate was that it might cause false elevations of urinary catecholamine levels due to interference with a fluorescence test. However, that doesn’t help you. We know that other antibiotics such as Cipro, Levofloxacin, Ofloxacin, and Rifampicin have shown up as opiates so there seems to be a chance of that happening. We just haven’t been able to document it. What does the confirmation test say?
False positives for Buprenorphine/Suboxone
Date: 12/3/2011
I am not sure how to ask in the false positives forum, but I am in a court probation program and I am continually getting false positives for Bupernorphine/Suboxone. I am being kept from graduating the program because of this, any idea what this could be? The confirmation tests all come back negative.
Greg
AskDocWeb: We know of no substance that would cause a false positive for Suboxone. However, if the confirmation tests all came back negative then they know that the results were false positive so what is their objection to graduating you from the program?
Small time lab?
Date: 12/4/2011
I’m on protonix and have taken it twice daily since i was 17 and am now 26 i failed a urnine test at work and got so worked up i puked i failed for thc and they sent it out and it still says i did and i know for fact i havent and no one will do a blood test so i can prove my innocents im from ky and times are tuff. Can u tell me if my protonix can still show a false result when sent to a small time lab?
Anita
AskDocWeb: If you give us the name of the lab we can check to see if they are certified or not. Uncertified labs are known to produce more errors than certified labs. On second thought we check with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). As of December 5th, 2011 there were NO certified labs in the state of Kentucky. That means that they do not meet the minimum quality standards to engage in urine drug testing for federal agencies.
Creatinine level
Date: 12/4/2011
Woke up at 7AM drank 5-6 cups coffee until 815AM, went to bathroom 3-4 times, then finished off 1/4 of a two liter mountain dew, was taking Pheneragen, called P.O. She said come in for ua no sweat, havent drank for over year. Week later she said my creatinine level was an 8 diluted. Then week later 48 hr. In jail what the hell is up
Tammy
AskDocWeb: Most people have a creatinine level between 20 and 350 mg/dl (milligrams per deciliter). A level below 20 is considered diluted, which may be caused by drinking lots of liquid. However, it is also one of the signs of someone trying to mask their drug use. Remember that when you are subject to drug testing you have a responsibility to provide a specimen suitable for testing. Failure to do that may be considered “Refused to Test”.
Flexerol?
Date: 12/6/2011
will flexerol show up in my drug test? I do have a script for it.
Paula
AskDocWeb: Flexerol is a common misspelling of Flexeril however, neither spelling shows up in our database of substances that may cause a false positive on drug tests.
THC in semen?
Date: 12/6/2011
I just tested positive for marijuana on a ua. I have not smoked for a few months. I did have sex with a pot smoker the night of my test. Is it posibile to fail a ua through someone’s semen in you?
Jennifee
AskDocWeb: That seems highly unlikely. Although THC has been found in semen the amount is very small and it is not well absorbed by your body. It is not nearly enough to make you test positive just by having sex with someone who smokes marijuana.
Test showed up for benzos
Date: 12/7/2011
Took a small piece of valium ten days ago and been sick drinking Nyquil and taking benadryil my test showed up for benzos what the heck any explanations?
Joey
AskDocWeb: That is not surprising because Valium contains benzodiazepines.
Ultram and alcohol testing
Date: 12/7/2011
Can ultram give a false positive for alcohol testing?
Susan
AskDocWeb: There is no alcohol in Ultram or any of the metabolites for alcohol.
False positive for marijuana
Date: 12/7/2011
Hello, I am a recovering alcoholic who has been clean for well over a year. I took a drug test today for the Department of children and family’s and FAILED!!! I tested positive for marajuana in which I do not smoke. Nor am I subject to it by anyone around me. I have chronic back pain and last night I took a 800MG motrin and 2 25mg benedry for allergy relief. I also took a drug test for a new job on 11/21/2011 and passed. What could have caused this and I was advised that my urine will be send out to a lab. Can the lab tell that this is not from using illegal drugs? and how do they decifer that? I need to know this info ASAP so I am prepared to help state my case, I’m afraid there going to involve my children. Thank you.
Deanna
AskDocWeb: Hi Deanna. There are currently 74 items on the list of possible causes for a false positive for marijuana and Motrin is on the list. If the lab where they sent your sample does a confirmation test, it should eliminate a false positive caused by Motrin. That is if the lab is certified, which is something to keep in mind in case you have a problem.
Problem with probation officer
Date: 12/7/2011
What can cause a diluted UA. My daughter gets diluted results with absolutely no alcohol consumption at all. She neither drinks nor uses drugs. She has requested advanced testing. Her probation officer refuses saying no other tests would help. Yet she continues to make my daughter do 2 uas and breathalizer per week. What can she do?
Viktor
AskDocWeb: It sounds like you may need legal counsel. However, any legal advice should come from someone local because laws vary so much from one state to the next.
