Failed the benzo part of a drug test

I had what was thought to be a spider bite which turned out to be reoccurring staph infections of which I had five. I was put on bactrim and told to take benadryl. Aside from my birth control these are the only two things I had been taking but failed the benzo part of a drug test (urine test). Which would be the cause?

AskDocWeb: It could be either benadryl or the bactrim. If that were the cause then getting a GC-MS confirmation test would clear that up.

Blue Amp energy drink and L-Theanine

I do not use any sort of illicit drugs but recently tested positive for opiates, THC, and Amphetamines. My one vice is I do drink an Amp energy drink every day before work. I saw you listed ingrediants for Amp already but there are different kinds with different ingredients. The one I drink mostly is the blue Amp: Elevate which contains L-Theanine, could this have caused such a reaction on a urine test?

AskDocWeb: L-Theanine is a natural amino acid and does not resemble any of the drugs of abuse. It is highly unlikely that it would show up on a drug screen.


Legatrin PM

I recently came up positive for cocaine after a mouth swab drug test. But I have not used any cocaine. I did use Legatrin PM the night before the test, will this cause a false positive?

AskDocWeb: Legatrin PM is a combination drug containing Acetaminophen and Diphenhydramine. Neither of these has been reported to show up as cocaine on urine drug tests. However, Diphenhydramine has been reported to sometimes shown up as Phencyclidine (PCP), tricyclic antidepressants (TCA), and/or benzodiazepine. Here is a list of products that contain Diphenhydramine:

The GC-MS confirmation test can differentiate between the above products and drugs of abuse.

How long does synthetic marijuana stay in your system?

I wrote previously about failing a drug test for synthetic marijuana and had a followup question about these possible false positives. In the response I got, it was stated that the test that Redwood Toxicology uses is the LC/MS/MS method which is fairly accurate. The one thing I know has changed since starting to pass my tests for both THC and synthetic is that before. The rehab program was doing the test after the sessions allowing for time to drink and “have the urge to go”. During the stint of positives in which I had not smoked any substance. They started to test at the beginning. Not allowing time to drink anything causing me to “go” without having the urge. I noticed that my urine was dark in color during these times and wonder if it could be that this could cause more of the substance that may be lingering in my system to be in the sample. Causing me to fail these tests and show as if I have smoked again.

I am not a very active person and work at a desk job. It took me over two months for my system to come clean from THC after going from a very active smoker to nothing at all. How long does synthetics stay in your system? Does it bind to fat cells similiar to THC? Can this explain why after not failing tests for either substance that the change in the testing times and body makeup could cause these “positives”?

AskDocWeb: The detection time appears to vary with the specific synthetic. We have seen detection times that range from 72 hours up to 30 days. In the case of chronic or high use the window of detection could be longer. Of course the detection time also varies with age, weight, rate of metabolism, and your diet over time. Here is a general guideline for detection times:

The metabolites of synthetic marijuana are indeed stored in fat cells along with many other toxins. According to the Centers of Disease Control the average American has 116 toxic compounds in their body. Of course that doesn’t include synthetic marijuana. Because the fat cells release these toxins in uneven amounts over time, the possibility of positive drug test results is unkown.

Suboxone clinic

I attend a suboxone clinic and was drug tested and it showed I have used Methadone. And I haven’t. They are sending it to the lab. Will the lab be able to tell them that it wasn’t actually Methadone?

AskDocWeb: Yes, a certain percentage of urine tests are known to produce false positives. That’s why they send samples out to a lab for confirmation, which will return a negative result if there is no Methadone in the sample. The confirmation tests are very accurate.

Positive for benzos

I recently took a urine analysis and it came up positive for benzos and I’ve never taken them in my life. I’m on metronidazole and used orajel with 20% benzocaine in it and was wondering if either of those would come up positive for benzos…

AskDocWeb: Although some antibiotics have caused problems on urine drug screens metronidazole is not listed as one of them (so far). Benzocaine is not on the list however, that doesn’t rule out the possibility of a false positive. For that you would need to get a confirmation test.
