Positive for Restoril
Date: 1/10/2012
I had a d and c then had to take a UA. My result shows positive for restoril, had diazepam, promethazine, ondansetron, ibuprofen, fomotidine, omeprazole, fentanyl, lidocaine, ceftriaxone, doxycycline, robitussin.

Lakeeshia

AskDocWeb: Several of your meds have shown up as false positives on urine drug tests. Ibuprofen, promethazine, and omeprazole have tested false positive for THC. Robitussin has tested false positive for opiates. However if they are testing for Restoril (Temazepam), that is a benzodiazepine. Diazepam contains benzodiazepines.

Cialis, Levitra, or Viagra?
Date: 1/11/2012
Will cialis, levitra or viagra show a false positive on a drug test?

Bob

AskDocWeb: Those drugs do not show up on a urine drug screen. They are not classified as drugs of abuse so you can enjoy a good sex life without that particular concern.

Will hydroxyzine make me fail a drug test?
Date: 1/11/2012
I just started taking hydroxyzine and I wanted to know if it would make me fail a drug test and if so what would it make me fail for?

Meagan

AskDocWeb: Hydroxyzine has not been reported to show up on urine drug tests for drugs of abuse.

Will these cause a false positive?
Date: 1/11/2012
Hello again, I have a few new medications and would like to know if they give a false positive for anything the pills are tramadol, vitamin d, levothyroxin, and asprin. I would like to know if they give a false positive for anything so when I go to another pain management doctor and they give me a drug test I will know what to expect.

Cameron

AskDocWeb: None of your medications are on the list of possible causes for false positives on urine drug screens. The only vitamin on that list is Riboflavin (vitamin B2) and that showed up only when large doses were used. However, if you start taking a new medication you may want to check it against this list.

Hard documentation about OTC meds causing false positives
Date: 1/11/2012
Is there any hard documentation available publicly showing official documentation of any OTC meds causing a false positive? If so where can I find this?

Jason

AskDocWeb: When you read through the list of causes for false positives you will see a reference number for each item. Clicking on the reference number will take you to the page that lists the sources used for references. These include the companies that make the drug testing kits and drug manufacturers.

Methylhexanamine
Date: 1/11/2012
How long will Methylhexanamine stay in blood or detect in urine??

Tatito

AskDocWeb: Methylhexaneamine has a short half-life, somewhere between 4 to 12 hours so it should be out of your system within 3 days.

Athletes should note that methylhexaneamine is often listed as something else in an ingredient list. Here are the most common names (synonyms) listed by the makers of dietary supplements and energy drinks:

  • 1,3-dimethylamylamine
  • 1,3-dimethylpentylamine
  • 2-amino-4-methylhexane
  • 2-hexanamine, 4-methyl-(9CI)
  • 2-hexanamine, 4-methyl-
  • 4-methyl-2-hexanamine
  • 4-Methylhexan-2-amine
  • DMAA
  • Floradrene
  • Forthan
  • Forthane
  • Geranamine (trademarked by Proviant Technologies)
  • Geranium extract
  • Geranium oil extract
  • Geranuim oil
  • Methylhexanamine

If you are using supplements with the above ingredients, athletes should be aware that the presence of Methylhexaneamine may cause a positive drug test because was banned by WADA. If you are not an athlete but just being tested for drugs of abuse then this may still be a problem. The U.S. National Library of Medicine confirms that dimethylamylamine may test positive for amphetamines on urine drugs tests.

Can naproxen cause a false positive?
Date: 1/14/2012
I took a drug test yesterday and I tested positive for THC. I don’t do drugs. The only thing I took was naproxen. Was this the cause? And it was sent to lab to determine if I really did smoke marijuana.

Jess

AskDocWeb: Yes, Naproxen (Aleve) has been known to show up as a false positive for marijuana. The lab should be able to easily eliminate this type of false positive.

Liver problems
Date: 1/16/2012
I have liver problems and keep testing positive for t h c even though I don’t use it, what is this about?

Peter

AskDocWeb: There seems to be something about liver problems or the medications used to treat them that causes urine drug tests to show false positive for THC. The reason for this is unknown but it has been happening for years. Unfortunately the “War on Drugs” discourages any research into the cause of this because it is a politically incorrect or taboo subject. Fortunately the GC-MS confirmation test can make a distinction between those who have liver disease and those who use THC.

Tested positive for opiates
Date: 1/16/2012
I have been in suboxone for 1 yr. Have NEVER had a positive drug screen..u/a. I have been on azithromycin, prednisone, phenergan, and took an ibuprofen 400mg. My Dr. Said I tested positive for opiates…could there have been a false positive? I am PROUDLY 1 YEAR clean.

Jami

AskDocWeb: If your Phenergan comes with codeine in it, that “may” be a possible explanation for the result. A quick call to your pharmacist would tell you if that were the case.

False positive for benzos
Date: 1/17/2012
I recently tested a false positive for benzos. All I have taken was Ibuprofen, Asprin, sore throat spray containing Phenol, Daytime and nighttime cold and flu medicine containing Acetaminophren, Dextromethorphan HBr, Phenylephrine HCl, and Doxylamine Succinate. I have never taken a benzo and didn’t know what one was before this test. Anything known about the above?

Lawrence

AskDocWeb: Some of your meds have been known to cause a false positive on urine drug screens but not for benzos. You might check the ingredients in your sore throat spray against this list for a possible explanation.

Postive for cocaine
Date: 1/18/2012
I was test postive for cocaine but I have never taking anything but prescribed drugs such as Tramadol, cyclobenzaprine, ketorolac 10 mg, oxycodon 7.5-325.

Lesia

AskDocWeb: Hi Lesia, welcome to the forum. Although those medications are not known to cause a false positive for cocaine, your test result still might be a false positive because of other reasons. If you truly believe the results were false then you may want to get a confirmation test.
