Is there a test to prove it’s the medications?
Date: 1/18/2012
I have been on naproxen 375mg 4 x’s, lortab 3.25mg 3 x’s and gabapentin 600mg 4x’s a day for over 6yrs. I keep testing pos on UA and hair folliclcle for marijuana. Is there a test they can do to prove it’s the medications, not me doing pot?
Francesca
AskDocWeb: There is a test called GC/MS (Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry) that is used for confirmation but that test will only show what is in the sample. It does not identify the cause of a false positive.

Hair testing
Date: 1/20/2012
I’m looking for information on hair follical drug test and false positives. Can you help me?
Blake
AskDocWeb: Sorry Blake, we haven’t had the time or funds to do much research on hair testing. If you have the name of the test kit or the manufacturer’s name we will see what we can do.
DOD drug testing
Date: 1/21/2012
I recently took a drug test for government employment. The night before, I took half of a trazodone as I’m a “lightweight”, as I usually do for insomnia about 2 nights a week. I read that this can give a false positive for amphetamines. My question is, how often does this occur? And if I come up positive will they end the “investigation” at that or will the DOD use GC/MS to verify that it wasn’t illegal use?
Ashley
AskDocWeb: If your test results in a false positive you should be okay. According to the Department of Defense INSTRUCTION NUMBER 1010.16:
E1.6.1. Following a positive result on an initial test (and any subsequent screening
tests), the specimen shall be tested by GC/MS to confirm the result before a positive
report is made.
And: E1.5.1. The initial test is to identify those samples that are “presumptively positive” to send them on for confirmation testing (i.e., remove negative samples to focus effort and resources on those samples most likely to contain drugs of abuse).

I have CPS in my life. I just got my kids back and I have been having clean drug test until this week. I’ve been taking Aleve ibuprofen, how can my test tell me I’ve been using THC?
Dionne
AskDocWeb: What type of test did they use? If it was a urine test called immunoassay drug testing or EMIT (Enzyme Multiplied Immunoassay Technique), some of those tests can’t tell the difference between THC and Aleve (Naproxen) or Ibuprofen. A positive test result “should” be confirmed by additional testing, usually with GC/MS, but that doesn’t always happen. In order to protect yourself from CPS abuse you may want to read “What to do if CPS workers are investigating you.” There is some good advice there.
I tested positive
Date: 1/22/2012
Hello! I have recently taken an on site drug test at my job and I tested positive for meth, opiates, and thc (which I don’t even know what an opiate is), but I have been taking about 10-12 ranitidine 150mg for heartburn, Azo yeast 2a day for yeast infection. I have taken a few stacker 2 the yellow jackets for energy, and I have taken 1 diflucan for my yeast infection, but that was several days before my test. I have been taking ranitidine for several years though. I have never done meth nor opiates, so has any of these meds caused me to be positive. Oh and my boss man said he thinks that I may have an infection of some sort because my urine was cloudy. Please help me, I need some insight because I have been throwing up for 3 days since I found out about my test.
Robyn
AskDocWeb: Ranitidine has been reported to sometimes show up as meth on urine drug tests. However, none of what you have listed would account for the presence of opiates. In order to eliminate that, if it is a false positive, you would need to get a confirmation test.
Valporiac acid?
Date: 1/22/2012
Can a person test positive on a drug test if they take valporiac acid?
Larry
AskDocWeb: Since “Valporiac acid” is not in our database we are going to assume that you meant Valproic acid. If that is not the case then let us know.
Valproic acid (VPA) is a chemical compound that is used as an anticonvulsant and mood-stabilizing drug to treat epilepsy, bipolar disorder, major depression, schizophrenia, and to prevent migraine headaches. Valproic acid is an anticonvulsant. Some of the commonly used brand names are Alti-Valproic (Canadian), Depacon, Depakene, Depakine, Depakote DR, Depakote ER, Depakote Sprinkles, Depakote, Stavzor, and Valparin.
Valproic acid does cause some false positives but not for drugs of abuse. False positive results on urine tests seem to be limited to urine ketones, elevated AST, ALT, LDH, serum alkaline phosphatase, and altered thyroid function tests. On thyroid function tests the results may falsely show decreased T 4, and free T 3.
Methylhex 4 2
Date: 1/22/2012
I bought some over the counter diet pills at gnc call methylhex 4,2 and I wanted to know if this pills can cause a positive on a 12 screen panel drug test?
Aaron
AskDocWeb: Dispite the “Meth” in the name Methylhex, there is nothing in the ingredients that would show up on a urine drug screen for drugs of abuse. Here is the ingredient list:
- Caffeine Anhydrous
- Sodium Pyruvate
- Hordenine
- Beta Alanine
- Guanidino Propionic Acid
- L-Alanine
- White Willow Bark
- Green Tea (leaves)
- 4-Methylhexan-2-amine HCL (Geranium extract leaves and Stem)
- Corynanthe Extract (Pausinystalia Yohimbe Bark)
- Kola Nut (seeds) 3% Caffeine Group Alkaloids
- 3 7-Dihydro-3 7-Dimethyl-1H-Purine-2 6-Dione
- Yerba Mate (Leaves)
- L-Arginine Ethyl Ester Dihcl
- Choline Bitartrate
- DMAE
- Capsicum
- Modified Starch
- Gelatin
- Vegetable Stearate
- Silicon Dioxide
- Red #3
- Blue #
- Red #40
- Titanium Dioxide
If you are an athlete involved in sports drug testing, you should be aware that the presence of Methylhexaneamine may cause a positive drug test because was banned by WADA. If you are not an athlete but are just being tested for drugs of abuse then this should not be a problem.
