No benzodiazepines detected
Date: 1/27/2012
I have taken a drug screen and it tested positive for benzodiazepines. I am taking bactria. They sent it to the lab and came …none detected ..why is that? What makes that drug do that? They gave out to me for staff…

La

AskDocWeb: Bactria is not listed in our drug database so you might want to check that spelling. There are a number of reasons for a urine drug screen to return a false positive test result:

  • The test kit may have been defective.
  • The test kit may have been past its expiration date.
  • Human error during the testing process.
  • Improper cleaning of the collection container.
  • Sample may be contaminated.
  • Illness in the person being tested.
  • pH value of the urine (acid or alkaline urine).
  • Dishonesty of the person doing the testing.
  • The sample may contain something that is cross-reactive.

Most of the above are rare but they do happen occasionally. False positives are most often cause by something that is cross-reactive to the chemicals used in testing. Urine tests are designed to find the metabolites of drugs of abuse. When a drug is cross-reactive that means that it may be mistaken for or incorrectly identified as a drug of abuse.

Failed drug screen
Date: 1/27/2012
I take oxy codone na opana daily. I was n the hospital na was given fentanyl n ultram n morphine so now I failed a drug screen for meth…please help.

Cecilia

AskDocWeb: You didn’t mention if you have used meth or not. It is important to be honest about that as it does show up on drug screens.

Doxylamine
Date: 1/27/2012
how many days after a single use of doxylamine will it come up false positive?

Andrew

AskDocWeb: Doxylamine has a half-life of 6-12 hours. It generally takes about 5 half-lives for the body to eliminate a drug to the point where it no longer has a clinically significant effect. However, the metabolites may remain far longer. Our best guess is about 3 days for the average healthy adult. Medical conditions and age could increase that time.

False positive for heroin
Date: 1/27/2012
I go to pain management every month and have for the last five years. I was in a car accident in 2005. I had a cervical laminectomy in 2008 due to the injuries sustained in the accident. I have been on Ms Cotin long acting and short acting for the last four years. I have been decreasing my pain medicine because I don’t want to take it anymore. I have been trying to stretch, exercise, and take vitamins and am concerned of the longterm affects on my kidneys and liver. I have also had to see a urologist for the same duration of time because of bladder issues.

I went for a toxicoligy test in December of 2011, I told When I took the urine test in the office the P.A. who is not my normal P.A. came into the room and told me that the urine test was fine and that they were sending the urine out to the lab to make sure. So I thought everything was fine until my visit this month. My test came back positive for heroine metabolite and high on the morphine count. I don’t understand and am Very Upset. I was already decreasing every couple of months and don’t even drink alcohol because of the medicine I’m on.

The result of the test caused my P.A. to take me off my medications over a period of a month. I asked my P.A. if there is anyway they could have made a mistake and she said no. I have never touched heroin in my life and was slowly cutting myself at home off the medications I was on. What upsets me even though I were to get tested again this is on my record. I am so upset about this and am worried because she gave me a blood pressure patch to wear for the duraton of the time I come off the medicine.

I have been sick for the last three weeks with a sinus infection and I told her that my M.D. told me to take Mucinex and Claritin-D for my congestion. I was also sick before my prior visit and always tell them anything any other doctor I may visit before my visit may have prescribed me. The only thing that I can think that may have cause the positive was having some pasrty bread with poppy seeds. I came home from my visit so upset and crying that this happened and looked up all kinds of sights on the internet.

I called her back after I did to speak with her. I asked her if there was any way they could have made a mistake, and she said no. That that test was specific for heroin and there that she spoke to the toxicologist from the lab. What can I do in my defense. I know in my heart the test is wrong but how can I prove it? She even asked me if I was thinking of hurting myself when I began to get upset in her office and cry. What was I supposed to do just say ok and leave? This is something that is on my record now and I should have the right to defend myself. Can you offer me any advice. Thank You. Sincerely,

Rose

AskDocWeb: It sounds like you are in a tough spot. It may or may not help to review the agreement that you likely signed when you first entered the pain management program. There may be something in there about an established procedure for addressing false positive test results. If someone here tested positive for heroin we would not believe it until actually seeing a report from the toxicologist. Have you seen the confirmation report, the toxicology report?

Opiates in a cortisone shot?
Date: 1/27/2012
Do you know can cortisone shots cause a false positive in a drug test? Opiates in a cortisone shot?

Kim

AskDocWeb: Cortisone shots usually consist of a mixture of corticosteroid and a local anesthetic. The local anesthetic works as a numbing agent to relieve the pain of the short. In some cases different types of medications may be added to the mixture. You would need to find out specifically what was in the shot they gave you. If opiates are used, the cortisone shot could show up as a positive.

Positive for Meth and Amp
Date: 1/27/2012
I took a drug test today and it showed positive for Meth and Amp. I take Amoxicillin 500mg cap sandoz and tyenol. Will either of those cause a positive test?

Megan

AskDocWeb: Amoxicillin has not caused false positive results for meth or amphetamines. However, it seems that several of the Tylenol products are cross-reactive on urine drug tests for those drugs of abuse. The good news is that the confirmation test rules out those types of false positive results.
